I’m also now in on the long route. The bike is still in the shed covered with mud where I left it after the HONC, so barring and major mechanical problems when I dig it out it’ll be a rigid 1×10 for me.

Right, tyre decision time. I’ll be riding a rigid 26″ hardtail, and I’m very tempted to put a ralph on the front and a bonty xr1 on the back, reason being it’ll make the road sections a lot easier and if the mud’s as bad as people fear it will be, there’ll be an awful lot of pushing irrespective of tyres. Sensible choice or reasoning doomed to a day of disappointment and pain?

I have the same lens on a D3100 and it’s great. I bought it as a cheap experiment but I’ve hardly used the kit lens since I got it. Can’t vouch for photographs of bands but the clarity is great and it’s really useful for indoor shooting (I don’t use flash as I can never get any decent shots using it).

Definitely quieter and less chain slap, but not enough extra tension to stop losing the chain on rougher descents. Overall for me, a good improvement and worth the extra cash.

Depends where your riding but Hans Dampf front and snakeskin Racing Ralph rear works for me for rockier trails/centres – great grip on the front but still good rolling on the back. NN on the back if it gets muddy.
