Take the bus – I drove to my miu and they put me in a half-cast straight away and told me i couldn’t drive. My car is still stuck in a carpark 15 miles away!

Thanks for all the replies – very very useful to get real life experiences. I certainly won’t be taking it lightly after hearing some of the stories.

A ray of hope for you: I had a suspected broken scaphoid which they splinted and re-x-rayed after a week or so, at which point they told me it was fine. I was sceptical cos it still bloody hurt but it was fine in another couple of weeks so I guess they were right.

Cool. I like rays of hope 🙂

Mine took 10 weeks to heal a bit longer than the normal 6 to 8 weeks for an “average” fracture. A couple physio sessions after that and I was back on the bike a few weeks after that. So maybe 15 weeks from breaking till easy riding and maybe 20 weeks before I was back to normal strength and riding confidently. I’m absolutely fine now and the recovery could have been quicker if I did more training on the bike but I’m a weekend warrior so not a huge problem if I’m a bit slow for a while.

    That’s more promising, thanks.

Good luck with that one Dave.
Broke mine around ten years ago and was too impatient to rest it until it was fully mended, fast forward to now and my wrist is a total mess. Operation next year to remove bone growth from where it shouldn’t be and attempt to re graft the scaphoid which is now a 50/50, failing that they are going to remove the bone totally and pin the rest together. My wrist clicks, locks and is fairly painful.

It’s a shite thing to happen to you but really important that you allow it to heal popularly.
Sounds nasty, but good advice and I won’t be rushing back after hearing that.

Welcome to the club mate. Did mine a year ago. Very clean break on the X-ray, some apparently don’t show up straight away so can take a while to diagnose. In pot 6 six weeks, many said I would be straight back in pot as once initial pot is off, they re X-ray it and usually not healed properly. Anyway, didn’t get re potted…thank god! I bought a power ball as recommended by a physio, gave it plenty of exercise , then about a month after the pot was off, back in the saddle. Heard people suffer for months / years with pain etc. felt nothing of the sort, suppose the moral here is to look after it and don’t rush back. Good luck.

Thanks, good to know there is hope!

Yes, I have a full cast which they’ve split and then re-strapped so it can be removed for the scan.

26 years 😮 Wish I’d not asked now!

You need to get testing Stan. I was convinced the Whyte (M109s) was going to be the one for me but it didn’t quite feel right, probably sizing issues but I wasn’t 100% comfortable, whereas the spearfish just felt like I’d always ridden it.

Oh, and in answer to the OP – asr5’s are great bikes. I’ve had an alu one for 4 years, ridden it in races, the alps, messing around – all good. It does need to be pushed as has been mentioned, but this just encourages you to ride faster and smile more.

The new wave of Headteachers appear to be little more than glorified supermarket managers who are driving their staff into the ground in order to make marginal gains.

What he said. I’ve been teaching for 20 years, used to love it and wanted to do nothing else. These days there’s so much wrong with education it’s frustrating and depressing.

My SIDS felt better after I’d changed seals and given them a lower leg service, but I still couldn’t get them to feel how I wanted either (solo air version) so they’ll be up for sale soon. I think that’s more to do with the intended use of the fork as a race fork rather than any problem with them – they just didn’t suit the riding I do.

That was very tough. My climbing came out as 6463ft for the long route but obviously these figures vary by what’s used to record. This was on a Garmin 800.

It is pretty sad. I post there more than I post here as I can’t get on visually with the forum here (and amount of posters). I’ve met some top people through Bikemagic that I consider friends and have ridden in places I would not have got to before so have a lot to thank BM for. It was in decline before the ‘forum revamp’ but that pretty much killed it. Just a shame that the owners have effectively wiped their hands the forum and really couldn’t give a monkey’s.

As you know, I’m in a similar position to you Kryton. If I go for a short travel full-sus 29er then really either the soda or the asr-5 should go, but I can’t bring myself to sell either really – partly due to sentimental attachments and partly because I know I won’t get anywhere near the value I could have got last year. I have a test ride on a Whyte M109-S next weekend and I’m hoping I’ll hate it.

I was due to go but I’ve been ill this week and since I’m still coughing up green unpleasantness it’s looking highly unlikely I’ll make it.

Just starting to get the bike ready for this. Going to use the hardtail in 1X10 guise, but what do people think for forks – SIDs or carbon rigids? (going on Cotic Soda)

Cheers, I’ll have another go at the tests at the weekend and see what it tells me. I’m not convinced I did the initial setup very well tbh.

Hi, just a quick question about the HR and virtual power malarky (which I admit I don’t fully understand yet). My red HR line always seems to be above the yellow power line and blue graph (example here ) This didn’t bother me until I noticed that other people’s workouts all seem to have the HR line well below. Does this mean I have the FTP (don’t really understand that either 🙂 ) set too low/high, or something else, or am I just really unfit?

I’m 6’3″ and ride a large roadrat – I run it as a flat-barred single speed for winter training or summer rides with the kids and it’s great. No, it’s not as stiff as my proper road bike but then it’s not intended for that.

What are the recommendations for chain length when swapping to 1×10? I’ve just taken off my 38/26 double and put on a 32t up front (36 rear) – do I need to lose some links from the chain to get more tension? (RF n/w, xtr clutch)

If it’s Stan’s yellow tape you’ve got in there then that’s all you need apart from some sealant (like Stan’s fluid).

I have a couple of UST Schwalbes in the shed, not used them for a while as the snakeskin versions were just as good tubeless and lighter. They definitely made them though, and if you look at the Nobby Nics on the Schwalbe site they are listed as ‘Tubeless ready’ or ‘Tubeless’ which I presume are the ust’s.

I won’t be getting rid of my asr5 – it’s too much fun (unless my numbers come up and some carbon loveliness finds its way to my shed of course). To be honest I’d suggest you have a go at a 24 on your yeti first but just lighten it a bit. When I first did the bonty I dressed mine up in light gear, put flat bars and bar ends on and it was fine. Having a perfect bike for it woud help but I reckon most of the battle at these things is mental. The recovery is going ok thanks, still pretty sore and achy but a good excuse to sit in my backside and watch the cricket when it starts 🙂

I’m starting to look for next year – Spearfish and Whyte M109 are currently on the ‘to test-ride’ list. Tell me which one you get Kryton, and I’ll get the other 😉

Sorry to read that, geez. Hope you heal okay…

Ouch to your arm dude! Hope you mend up well

Cheers. Can’t say I’m pain-free yet but have some great bruises to show the kids. Looks like we’ll have to put off that ride for a bit Teasal.

My mate was riding behind you when you burst your arm, he said it was amazing and the blood spurted miles, he stopped but that other chap jumped in to help, he rode off to find a marshall
Thank your mate for me please – getting the marshalls so quick really helped.
Yes, the blood spurtage was pretty scary, I’ve never seen that before and when it’s out of your own arm it looks pretty impressive :-0 Shouldn’t be any lasting damage to the arm, I was referred to the plastic surgeon as the doctor I saw at A&E said it was too much for him to do. When the plastics guy was routing around assessing the damage it was like the scene from Starwars where Luke is getting his robot arm checked – he kept asking me to try and move fingers/wrist while he looked inside to see what moved 😯

Interesting race for me, clipped a rock with my pedal on my second lap, got thrown off and landed badly resulting in a hole in my arm and much blood spurting out. Many thanks to the soloist who stopped to help, the marshals who got me and the bike off the track and the St Johns people for treating me. 6 hours at A&E wasn’t the result I had planned, or the honour of officially finishing last, but these things happen :-/

    Next year….

I’m bringing the forks to the 24/12 Kryton so you can have a look then (not on the bike, but as spare in case of the same kind of apocalyptic weather as last time)

Have you looked at the Exotic 29er rigids? that’s what I have on the soda – at the time I worked out that they would give me pretty similar length as the revs at 120mm they replaced.

    localhero94

120 for me. Tried a longer fork but lost some of the fun handling on singletrack. All depends where you ride I guess.

I’ve just done exactly the same thing (put sids on my soda from rigid). I’m currently using a bonty xr1 on the rear and a rocket ron 2.25 snakeskin on the front. This is perfect for my local trails and long-distance stuff, but was a bit hairy when I took it around Afan a couple of weeks ago (although I think that was more to do with trying to ride the bike like my full 5″ full sus rather than the tyres).

I was in there yesterday picking up a new roadie. Very helpful and knowledgeable staff, and if you’re buying a new bike the ‘podium points’ thing they do means lots of accessories to take home as well. (no connection either!)
