lobby_dosserFree Memberhaven’t drank any alcohol since Jan 3rd as I’m trying to make a real effort to get my fitness back by training and trying to watch what I eat . I only really like drinking beer, so it seems a bit at odds of what i’m trying to acheive.
I haven’t noticed any major weight loss or feel that i’m any fitter. But I am having better quality sleep (early to bed and all that) so I feel more energetic and motivated for training(rather than fitter if that makes sense???)
Although I do think i was drinking too much beer- so maybe you’re correct WCA.
lobby_dosserFree MemberOh dear, another one that’s missed the point.
ever try reading the thread before posting an "oh dear, look at how clever i am" reply?
Someone posted 10 reasons to like America, someone else replied refuting every one bar no 9 – denim. So I replied that denim isn’t 100% american.
maybe we should start a "random things about britain" and start it with supercilious daily mail reading tw*ts..and how come no-one’s mentioned the Weekly World News? top stuff and very "only in america"
Hello Mr Pot, my name is Mr Kettle.
lobby_dosserFree Membercopy him Highway to Hell, add Whole Lotta Rosie (Live) & Let There Be Rock (Live)
and that’s all you need right there. (your dad isn’t too wide of the mark)lobby_dosserFree MemberNo pictures of my DT50 or Italjet that I had before this
No pictures of my MZ250 that was my grandads and some barsteward stole.
lobby_dosserFree Member9. denim: Fair enough.
denim -> de Nimes (french) -> "from Nimes" – the material has a French origin
Mr Jacob Davies, the tailor who first thought it would be a good idea to cut the hardwearing material into trousers was actually Latvian and his business partner Mr Levi Strauss, who funded the patent and helped get the business off the ground, was German.
Oh dear, another one that’s missed the point.
No matter where Mr Strauss (albeit Loeb Strauss was an American Citizen when he is accredited with starting Levi Strauss & Co) or Davies originated from, it was still in the US that ‘denim jeans’ 1st were made and became one of the most popular form of clothing for the Western world. If Strauss had remained in Bavaria/ davies in Lativia would they just be another regional dress like lederhosen, kilts, saris etc? Who knows.
If you were being that picky you would know that ‘de nimes’ was material made of silk and wool, jeans (from Genoa) was cotton & linen. The material most recognisable as ‘Denim jeans’ was developed in North Carolina and historians still debate why ‘denim’ and ‘jeans’ were used to describe ‘denim jeans’.
lobby_dosserFree MemberOK I’ll add number 10
10. Japan.(also considered to be good at stealing ideas). Japanese industry pre & post WWII churned out inferior, poor quality copies of western goods. It was transformed by American Dr Edwards Deming.
So you agreed with two things the US have invented, but also agreed on 5 points were the US have contributed (hugely)to the invention and adoption.
Comparing Hollywood and Bollywood, especially using Quality over Quantity as an argument, is a matter of taste and maybe cultural background. For me, the US has released most of my favourite films. If i was French, I may have a selected a 3rd option.
lobby_dosserFree Memberstrangely enough i thought the short films from the Acid House (Granton Star Cause, Soft Touch, Coco Bryce and i think there was another) were excellent. The accents were more realistic and settings were less art house & stylistic.
lobby_dosserFree Memberyep rude boy – i said invented or hugely influential
1. the television we watch: Good Lord, seriously? yep. Not necessarily speaking about the content more the technology. (although there have been classic US programs, films, cartoons that have graced our TVs over the years) US were hugely influential in development of television technology and without their investment the adoption of television would have been years later. satellite? Cable? Again without US influence…..
2. the telephone we use: Think that was a transatlantic development, but granted, they spent loads of money on it. Without the investment of US firms, again would it’s adoption been much later?
3. the ipod: MP3 more a collaboration between scientists globally; iPod designed by Jonathan Ive; British bloke.- a british bloke who couldn’t raise £60k to finance it? Again US company, US investment.
4. the music we listen to: A fair amount, of ‘Pop’ music, certainly. Again the history and origins of rock/pop music could be debated- did it all not originate from Celtic folk music? But general consensus is black slaves started playing Celtic Folk music in different key and slower beat adding their own lryics which became known as R&B. This was then stole back by whites such as Elvis and became Rock & Roll, then brit rock then pop. The rest is history. Also, Jazz and stuff. but I listen to all sorts, including Classical, Reggae (is that not based on Ska that is based on R&B & Jazz?) techno (admittedly Kraftwerk and New Order can be seen as the early innovators however without the influence of disco, funk, gay, chicago house movement that evolved into acid house who knows would we have techno music?), which are mainly not from the US.
5. cinema/movies: Bollywood is actually more prolific, and the films are seen by audinences as large as, if not bigger. And Hollywood may churn out quantity, but not necessarily quality. But I’ll give you, the US has probably done more to advance the medium.
6 the internet: Fair enough! Although again, a collaboration of scientists/engineers worldwide.
7. extreme sports: most of the winter ones were developed in Europe, XC MTB is a development of Cyclo-Cross, Parascending, Base-Jumping, Bunjee jumping etc are all European too. The US, through TV, has popularised many of these sports, however. My point
8. computing technology: early developments were made in Britain and Europe (see Charles Babbage, and I think the Japanese might have someting to say about the development of technology. US has been successful in marketing OS’s, though. again without US companies such as Cisco, IBM, Dell, Compaq, HP, Lucent, Microsoft, Apple and the supporting EMS industry where would computing be?
9. denim: Fair enough.
10. beef jerky: Preserving beef/meat in this manner has existed for thousands of years, all over the World. I only put this one in cause i couldn’t think of a tenth 😳So. Not wishing to discount the enormous impact the US has undoubtedly made on global culture, society, industry and technology, a lot of claims of ‘Americans invented all stuff’ is simply not true. I’ve heard Americans claim that their country invented the TV, the Bicycle, the Car, the Camera and numerous other things. Myths perpetuated by their enormous media systems, and basic ignorance of actual facts.
They are good at taking others ideas, developing them, then passing them off as their own. I’ll give them that. as the japanese. Maybe the Euro’s are good at inventing stuff & there’s a lot I dislike about US politics, economics, world police, arrogance etc but i think sometimes we find it difficult to give the US credit where credit is due.
lobby_dosserFree Memberyou go for an overnighter and you check in luggage? schoolboy error.
should have worn the suit had had the jeans and t-shirt in your hand luggage.
you must be very lucky if you travel a lot and this has never happened to you before.
lobby_dosserFree MemberI read the book 1st and I had already visualised in my head certain scenes and what the characters were like. For me I was really disappointed when the film came out as i thought it was toned down and the accents were a bit middle class.
However, I now like it and understand why it was shot that way.
lobby_dosserFree MemberI think no matter what anyone says this guy isn’t ready or willing to change. Too busy at work is a poor excuse.
It’s almost the same mentality smokers have as to why they don’t want to quit. One million reasons why they can’t.
lobby_dosserFree MemberI thank the US for inventing (or hugley influential in)
1. the television we watch
2. the telephone we use
3. the ipod
4. the music we listen to
5. cinema/movies
6 the internet
7. extreme sports
8. computing technology
9. denim
10. beef jerkyAlso the friendliness of ‘normal’ american people and any country that has 4 -way stops.
lobby_dosserFree Memberyes and no. By setting up a central register, each chemical substance would only have one REACH assement. So if someone has already registered it & your company mfgs or imports more than a tonne, you use the assesment for your registration.
Our company started looking at it a while ago and quickly scanned our BOMS and discovered that we only imported a handful of items within scope.
lobby_dosserFree Memberas widrness says. Send the item you got paid for, receive feedback, get the cash. I think that part of paypal is a good thing as it discourages people creating ebay accounts for quick scams.
AFAIK you can’t ‘manually’select the payment type for ebay transactions, it automatically defaults to ebay payment. The other payment options are for transactions outwith ebay, such as selling stuff on here.
lobby_dosserFree Memberrudeboy- by the sounds of it you are quite an accomplished photographer. I’m genuinly interested to see some of your work.
I’m new to DSLR/photography and I’m trying to teach myself ‘basics’ by trying to use manual settings to capture the scene and trying to minimise post-processing. I’ve got to say i’ve had limited success and sometimes I’m guilty over over-processing, but having the exif data does help me predict settings for the next time.
Technically, I’m getting better all the time, but i still lack certain something when it comes to composition, artistic eye etc. I know this can’t be fully taught, but it does act as an inspiration to see good work and to try and figure out how the photographer shot it.
lobby_dosserFree Memberi think the HSE site is fairly self explanatory. I think there’s still a bit of toing and froing as the central commision, for REACH, was running behind with building and staffing HQ in Finland.
lobby_dosserFree Memberlobby_dosser – I presume you replaced all the bolts that were overtightened rather than just slackend them off?
No, never replaced them or slackened them off.
lobby_dosserFree Memberi had the BT vision thingy and the hardware was pretty poor. I had to change my set top box twice and change my wireless router once. Each time it is delivered by a ‘BT engineer’ that they cannot schedule for AM or PM- even though when you speak to the ‘plug insertor’, you find out that this is their only job for the day.
Even after I had changed the router, the coverage in my house (i stay in a two bedroom flat although it does have solid walls) was rubbish. The network kept dropping and the signal to my bedroom was terrible. So with the poor hardware and performance issues, I had plenty of opportunities to try out BT’s customer support. Sticking hot knitting needles up my japper was less painful.
BT’s support consists of Off-shore 1st level support that basically tell you to ‘re-boot’ your hardware. If this doesn’t work, they will pass your case over to the mythical ‘technical support’ who are supposed to phone you back within 24 hrs. (you cannot contact them. oh no.) After a reasonable amount of time, you have to phone back up to ask the 1st level guy why the technical guy hasn’t contacted you. Then you have to go back through the case again because the 1st 1st guy hadn’t recorded it and you’re informed that a technical guy will definately contact within the next 24hrs. Repeat 3 or 4 times.
I’ve not any dealings with sky, but i would be surprised if anyone could be worse than BT.
lobby_dosserFree Memberwhat a strange question to try and describe an answer. almost like asking what does chicken taste like. 😕
Since buying a torque guage, I discovered I was overtightening most of the bolts on my bike.
lobby_dosserFree Memberthey should have a draw for grid positions for every race. Otherwise it just appears to be (for the non-fan) a 70 odd lap procession with little overtaking and some dubious results.
lobby_dosserFree Membermost of the folks I’ve met in the real world have been pretty cool.
I have met a few that have turned out to be either too much of a bike geek, on an ego trip, trying too hard to be ‘cool’ or opioniated bores. I think i kinda thought they would be different in real life (or i never noticed it in their postings previously).
lobby_dosserFree Memberhe should be suspended then DNA’d before being allowed to re-apply for his position.
lobby_dosserFree Member(from my days of yore studying materiala) it’s only a hairline crack when the bike is sitting stationary. When you are riding it, the forces may cause the crack to open and close slightly resulting in fatigue causing brittle fracture of the weld (or the adjacent HAZ). With Alu alloys being susceptible to brittle fracture, this usually results in catastrophic failure- in that the joint will fail completely and suddenly. The joint will definately fail completely at some point. I would contact titus and see what there Out of warranty policy was- they may give you a discounted frame.
Would I be tempted to ride it? mmmmmmmm If you really had to, i would at least do what davidtaylforth says and strap the joint well in duct tape- and take it easy.
