I love my GD's – easy maintenance, reliable, simple – not that pretty, but then when they're covered by my arse who cares.

The older one has been used/abused and has got a wee bit of play in it now – but it's no issue and it's certainly not comparable to that which seems to come as standard with the speedballs

I'm totally failing to MTFU about the weather atm

    It's royally PMO

Guess I'll just get used to having to clean the bike/sliding all over the place/filthy kit/remembering to take a change of gear/replacing bearings, pads and cables every five minutes by the winter again, just like last year :|

I was told it was just a teenage fad I was going through. 14 years later it seems more appropriate than ever for me to be a vegan.

    Simples.

Funny thing I have noticed a lot recently

A few omnivores seem to jump onto threads about vegan/veggie food and state the case for eating meat. Or ask questions about why people do it, and then accuse people who answer them of aggressively trying to convert them.

It seems like they always feel the need to convince everyone their omnivorous lifestyle choice is the right, and only, one.

This was a thread about some processed veggiefoods stuff started by a meat eating person who thought it was tasty. Not about the ethics of a plant base diet.

So why did it have to turn into a witch-hunt against those with different views. I don't understand why people have such a problem with others who feel that veganism is the right path for them to follow.

I grab the left hand bar with my right hand and the saddle with my left hand. Works a treat once the bike is up and balanced on my camelbak.

I've just smashed up another one this weekend.

They are definitely not an alternative to fullface and wouldn't dream of wearing one for DH or in the Alps. But IMO they do offer more protection (from superficial damage like bruising and grazes) than a standard XC lid and have definitely saved my face numerous times.

I love riding with my MET for XC and feel exposed in a standard helmet now. Walkers tend to get out of the way quicker, I think they assume that (what they see as) a fullface means you're more likely to run them over

Slightly OT – the crash replacement scheme is pretty dire though – Fisher Outdoor quoted £89.17 to replace mine (plus I'd have to add postage on top of that to send it to them) – I've just ordered a new one from Rutland for £84.99 p&p free.

For example, why on earth would a farmer kill the cow's calf?

    see here: http://www.vegansociety.com/animals/exploitation/cows/dairy_cow.php

Trust me, it happens, I'm a country girl, I knows about this stuff.

You cannot produce milk for humans without cruelty to the cow.

Whether you believe in veganism or not, eating meat or not, and animal explotation or not, you cannot surely believe that unnaturally forcing an animal to get pregnant, take the calf away, milk her until she is sore, lame and bleeding and then repeat the cycle is anything other than cruel. Especially when we don't need milk to live. Even if they were 'rotated'. Just out of interest – where would the money come from to keep the cow whilst is it unproductive?

also, if you don't like soya milk (sweetened or unsweetened) there are obviously other ones to try – rice, oat, almond, quinoa (which is surprisingly nice) etc

Depends, but usually one or more of the following…

Cereal with soya milk (hot milk in the winter on shredded wheat is good)- if you wanna be healthy you can chuck some dried fruit or bananas or summut in with it
Porridge made soya milk and sugar or agave syrup
Toast with peanut butter and jam/marmalade/ginger marmalade
Toast with dairy free marg (eg vitalite or pure)and marmite
    Bagels/crumpets/muffins
Fried Mushrooms and linda mccartney sausages on toast
    Beans on toast
    Fry up
Or, if I'm on the road a costa coffee from the service station made with soya milk and caramel syrup and a trek bar or something similar

    HTH :-)

I can't change gear with my left hand at all after breaking my thumb last year as I can't lock the joint.

So I just take my hand off the bars and use my palm to push the lever.

It's no big deal now I'm used to it.
