Faaaatty – all smiles per miles :-)

havent ridden my 29er since i bought a fat bike and it also makes me appreciate my mojo hd more when i ride the 26er

if its about enjoying being on the bike a fatty is brilliant, great fun and lots of grinning, who cares how fast im going?

if you want to go fast – still take the Fatty, plenty of hairy moments, new (sometimes unintended) lines and plenty of bouncing still a laugh and very enjoyable, the grip is staggering.

    cant lose by trying one?

i used to get this once a year, took a month to go, coughing and phlegm.
now whenever its at all cold i try to wear a windproof front and when its really cold, something over the mouth

everyone has their opinions and i agree in lots of situations fat bikes arent as good as 26ers and 29ers
but rubbish, no not at all

40 miles on wet sand in a day or no miles in a day reading and replying to singletrack forums?

There is no “need” for any type of bike except for transport surely? so that rules out the point of having most bikes.
Wanting a bike for something else is different, do you want a bike for
speed, tricks, trail, enduro, down hill,Xc,soft stuff and bumpy stuff, all have their merits. saying one is better for enjoyment is an opininion in the eye of the beholder.
i would say someone who discounts any other type of bike than what they like is stunted in their outlook and is dissing the other type of bike riders. Each to their own, and long live ALL forms of transport that you can use recreationally and get enjoyment out of

i have three very different bikes
ive got an ibis mojo hd which i use for mucking about on, pump tracks, small jumps and as my general trail bike.
i have a carbon beargrease fat bike which is 3 lbs lighter than the mojo hd and 4lbs lighter than the rockstar.
i also have a carbon rockstar 29er, which i bought to go faster than my other bikes, but i dont use it since i bought the fat bike.
there is a ten mile route outside my back door which is a mix of trail, singletrack and roads. these 3 bikes are very different but i take more or less exactly the same time to do the route on each bike.
The big difference is that on the fat bike there is always a grin on my face, im not worried about being overtaken or how fast im going, they are just out and out fun. The fat bike will also go uphill much quicker than either of the other 2 bikes, the grip is phenomemenal. There is a time for each bike but until youve tried one for more than a couple of hours, please dont say they are a waste of time because they truly arent

i was driving south down the m11 and came to the last dark bit of the motoway before bishops stortford, doing a little above 70 :-)
and i noticed a strange shape in the road which turned out to be a small herd of deer standing still in the dark on the m11, i braked as hard as i could and just side swiped one a little as they scattered, no damage to us or them luckily.
on a funnier note, i have some deer that wander into my garden and in the autumn they get drunk on the rotting fermenting apples from the trees, they stagger a bit which is quite funny

    I sold my moonlander recently
left tyres on deflated to 5psi,turned the bars and put it in the on one box my fatty came in.
i added lots of gaffer tape and as much bubble wrap as i deemed suitable.
i used “senditnow” (part of parcelforce?)
cost about £70 insured up to £1400 and it arrived the next day to a very happy person in Manchester
it was posted in Tottenham and collected by a parcelforce van who did not query size and dimensions, although im not saying thats always the case

ive been mountain biking for 25 years and never enjoyed it as much as i do now, proving you are never too old to learn something new, all thanks to a skills day with Jedi in November last year.
its all smiles per miles now, even when i fall off trying something new i have a big grin, and more to the point I WILL TRY new things that i never knew possible for me to do thanks to Jedi`s patience and teaching skills and encouragement

they dont seem to have much compression damping for surviving drops

not everyone buys carbon frames just because they are lighter, but having a lighter bike underneath you must be better for certain riding, the same as having a heavier bike is better sometimes?

    another +1 for Jedi
I learnt that what you learn on a skills day actually does work on the trail.
Gap jump success turns into ditch jump success, practising berm techniques helps on all fast bends, body position on the bike makes for smoother riding and more control. I just wish i had done a skills course with Jedi 10 years ago.
The feeling of achievement is very very satisfying with more to come

i used “senditnow” to send a moonlander fatbike in a giant bike box, cost about £70 up to £1400 ins, it was picked up by the parcelforce van and arrived the next day even though i had paid for 48 hour service

i had the same problems with oakleys that i used skiing, and then i tried some goggles by “SPY” i dont seem to have the same problem with those.
if i remember correctly SMITHs used to do some goggles with a small battery operated fan in them :-)

ive had 5 ibis mojos, original, sl and hd. im 6ft, at the same time i had a medium, a large and an xl.
felt too high centre of gravity on the xl so sold it
ran the large and medium at the same time and felt quicker and more nimble on the downhill twisty bits on the medium, so sold the large.
i now have an hd 160 with the limbo chips and spare shock to drop to 140 maybe, although i cant see a time i would ever want to.
i would never be without a mojo and i like the hd best so far.
i have marz 55s and monarch + shock at rear and it perfect for me, oh and im 16 stone kitted. does everything i want.
there is a 10 mile loop behind my house and i do very similar times on my fat bike and 29er and the mojo,

i did exactly this last night
    32t narrow wide on front
    42t one-up on the rear,
took off the front derailleur and shifter ( now i can thread the dropper cable through the channel that took the front mech cable)
i havent put a type 2 / clutch rear derailleur on yet, i will try that and see first.
    good luck :-)

do you think the blutos will be man enough for everything or just an immediate short term solution.
4 psi wow, i havent run them that low yet, didnt they drag on the flat stuff?
i have a moonie with bud and lou and a beargrease with dillingers, i was thinking of leaving the dillinger on the rear and putting a fatter tyre on the front, what do you think?
i might wait for the next generation of fat suss forks, or get a bucksaw and “borrow” the forks for a while

were you running tubeless and what pressures, did you get many punctures.
a great video and very inspiring to do something similar.
that elephants trail looks nervy :-)
