Are Hartech still doing the maintenance plan? That guarantees you against the IMS issue…

Average net worth of a UK adult is £172k.

Claiming that having a single source of wealth, a pension pot, of nearly 6x that doesn’t make you rich demonstrates a distinct detachment from the reality of the vast majority of people.

It might not be private jet money, but you’re still in an exceptionally privileged position.

I don’t think any here in that position doubts that. However, you live in the world that you inhabit.
Top 1% it’s a nice place to be, but it’s not just a gravy train. In my old role I produced work for about 125 people. Keeping them gainfully employed, and productive and therefore essentially making sure their jobs exist is not just a cake walk.

People in that top 1% contribute a lot compared to the true HNW so cut us a break now and an again. Yes it’s 1-100 people but that’s still quite a few in a country of sixty odd million.

I’ve spent some quality time with both. The boxster is special, the mx5 less so.

Don’t drive a boxster if you want the mx5. It won’t feel the same after.

5-6k should buy one. But learn and look carefully. 2.7 should be fine. I ran an S for a year or so, you don’t need that much pace, the wail at 7k is fab :-)

Get learned up, and go get one.

If so, it feels pretty much in line with what nonDocs on similar salaries would be paying. Clearly the devil is in the detail.

The specific challenge here is the value of the DB pension scheme. That’s what’s causing the issue.

I think the essence is you are in the weird 60% tax area. Then the extra tax due on the wooden dollars pension contributions hits you hard.

The two earner family each on 49k vs a single earner on 100k and child benefit.

But think of what that single earner on £100k saved on childcare costs. Mitigates it a bit.

Well yes if they are alive and or present. But that’s not checked in the tax law is it…

I don’t think it’s costing money to work. But it’s one of those perverse incentives that our tax system seems to struggle with.

There are lots of bits that could be faired / squared up.

The two earner family each on 49k vs a single earner on 100k and child benefit. See also paying back the tax free allowance.

No one really objects to paying tax. They do object to the absurdities and being told that they are rich enough not to care.

But if you buy well you can do ok. I’ve just sold an Alfa 159 for 3.5k bought for 8k 5 years ago. Ok tyres were a bit pricey, and it needed a turbo replacement (£500) but overall it was circa a grand a year in depreciation which is fairly reasonable

I think some of the suggestions will need a contingency plan equivalent to the 5k budget for repairs, high road tax and 20mpg

fair observation! Buy well and you can get something that would have been very spendy and very special. But yes a Bork fund is necessity

If you can handle bigger tax / fuel bills then there are all sorts of interesting things about.
Ignoring the 2+2 element a 986 boxster is worth a look.
I’ve just bought fully loaded jeep grand Cherokee. It’s wonderfully (awfully) American and smokes about nicely. 100k miles on it and it was 5 grand or so.
I’ve just sold on an Alfa 159 – lotta style and practicality there…

Not sure that needs a 20/30k investment. You can pick something decent up for less than 10k. Keep say 3k in a Bork fund and save / spend the rest on something memorable or non depreciating

Why don’t you measure the temp on the inlet pipe? That should be a good indication of heat being generated

You could climb up the NF to the top, descend down Lawson Park, climb up the next bridleway back into the forest and then follow it over and back down to the visitor centre.

I think you’ve hit the nail on the head. The qualification just demonstrates that you can operate at x level.
Taking anyone beyond that requires a duty of care that is shown not just by a qualification but the competency to do it.
That said many do the same without the requisite skills

Can you make boilers? Silver soldering? For model steam engines they seem to be very expensive. Looks relatively straightforward with the right kit.

Now the likelihood is that if you are in that band then you’ll be managing you tax with AVC’s to pension and charitable donations. So it’s arguable if the tax man would have seen it anyway

    lesgrandepotato

Well that depends on how you got the money. If it’s at the highest marginal rate of tax (60%) That 5k would have been 12k of income so 7k tax paid already…

If you have magic money with no tax burden attached to getting it then the bike at half the price will generate half the VAT. It’s the not paying the 7k to get the 5k that gets people frothy.

Don’t get me started on charitable donations. Same problem…

The reality here is there are many more net benefactors from taxation than net contributors.

Maybe let the contributors have a little of what they’ve earned. The world probably won’t end.

I’d like to do this – I was a cub, scout, venture scout etc., but as a man who’s kids are past that age I don’t think I could ever bring myself to offer my services for fear of suspicion of bad intentions. I realise of course that people have to be checked, but I don’t want to be even briefly thought about in those terms. Stupid I know, but I suspect that holds a lot of people back.

Don’t be daft, crack on and find a group and jump on in. People will just be welcome for the help.

GSL of 1st Grange and Cartmel here. We have 5 sections, about 100 or so kiddos learning skills for life.

I have between 30&40 volunteers. If you want to do one night a month, or just the odd camp. I treasure your volunteering. Many hands makes light work and that’s how scouts works best.

What we do makes a difference. Is it sometimes a pita yes. Is the training occasionally a pita, yes, do we get more out more than we put in. Yes.

Dive in, your group will appreciate it.

There is a balance of a new car vs pollution in my mind. A lightly used older vehicle is better than scrappage and creating a new incrementally less polluting one.
Drive something that exists, fix it when it breaks and use it responsibly.

Not really looking for tricky driving stuff and given the location we live in a 4wd is the only practical answer if you want to get in and out all year.

We discounted iceland as being to expensive previously when we needed to hire all the stuff. We’ve got the Jeep, we have the camp gear and we have a roof tent off the VeeDub. It could be a great adventure without going full ray mears

Keep the balance bike and the newie around. Let her pick the one she wants.

She won’t be able to start peddling so Scoot her up to speed. Send her to another human. Don’t let the one at the back speak. Looking back causes accidents…
