Have a look at Doncaster airport movements group on Facebook.

You’ll find that 747s are common as muck at the minute!

The Antonov you heard was a Illushin – last time we had an antonov in it left in daylight and THE antonov hasn’t been for several years now!

    Yes I’m a sad act!

I’m in and will be getting the top version.
But then I’m a GA type and currently run XPlane 11 with paid for (about £25 a go) Cessna, Diamond and Piper aircraft models, so the additional cost for so many extra aircraft (that I am interested in flying) is nothing really.

If you want to fly buses, then it might not be so good.

I’m hoping that all of the additional software I use to power my cockpit will soon migrate to work with MSFS.

While the scenery isn’t that far ahead of what I currently have in xplane, the fact that it will just work is a big draw for me – although I enjoy tinkering, it can be a pain in the rectum when it doesn’t work quite as you’d expected!

I’d like to see a speed measuring device set up to trigger a ‘child’ running out in front of the speeding vehicle at such a time that will ensure the driver has no possibility to stop and avoid it.
Ultimately while the penalty for speeding (even if caught) is such a small amount when compared to the cost of running a vehicle in the first place, there is no deterrent and no education.

If a speeding driver believed that they had caused harm (even if only for a short amount of time) they would experience a physical reaction and likely think about the consequences.
Either that or drastically up the penalty – both in cash terms and reduced points allowance.

How long since you did a reset without restoring from a backup?

I had issues with my 6 for ages until it was pointed out that restore from backup restores the iOS data too (hence reinstalling any rogue stuff).
Get all your data backed up to the cloud in its own right and then you can just start afresh and your data will be there automatically.

I found an extra half a day in my knackered battery once whatever was constantly running on the system was stopped.

We hang ours off the uprights of a 4″ round rail swingset.
Granted in that configuration they aren’t massively stressed as the top rail carries the load in compression, but previously I made a hammock stand out of 4×2’s with the post at a ~30 degree angle.

I’d have thought a 4″ round rail (£10 for a 4m length last time I bought) sunk into the ground should be fine. If you can give it a bit of angle away from the hammock even more so!

EDIT: The design above is more or less what I built, but I think my uprights were less well supported than that. (the braces were shorter bits of wood as they were cut from one length cos I’m tight!) my upright was unsupported for around 4′.
EDIT 2: Actually my uprights were only a single piece of 4×2… It was also only screwed together!

A bit later in RAF history (but to my mind actually a far more exciting time):
A view from the hover – John Farley… Harrier Test pilot
Any of Mike Brooke’s books – goes from operational Canberra jockey to instructor to test/display pilot and very entertaining.

From a charidee point of view – there is a series of books called out of the blue that donate to the RAF Benevolent Fund

If he’s anything like the typical Av Geek then DVDs of:
    633 Sqdn
    Battle of Britain
    Dambusters
    Aces High
    Memphis Belle
    Hurricane
    TopGun

but for crying out loud steer clear of Fortress and Lancaster skies!

Depending on his level of interest and attention span during recovery, the RAeS have a podcast full of old lectures with some very interesting topics.

As alluded to earlier in the post, the CAA have granted permission (not that it was ever strictly prevented) to fly for the sake of engine health.

This is restricted to a half hour flight unless the manufacturer advises otherwise (although most engine manufacturers who dictate regular running of engines say if must be a flight of one hour) once every 30 days and not further than 10Nm from the airfield.

The majority of light aircraft are fitted with engines designed in the 50’s and suffer badly from internal corrosion if not run regularly. Ground runs are not advised as it is not possible to get sufficient heat into the oil to drive off any moisture without overheating the rest of the engine.

Of course, for those who are lucky enough to live on their airfields or have valid reason to use their aircraft for work, this isn’t an issue!

I did ours last year – a different technique but far less weight.

As above, we were quoted £13k to convert and were told that it would conform to building regs, but they wouldn’t arrange for removal of the patio doors into the house (large rodent detected nasally). For anyone who’s wondering – there is no roof system possible that can allow you to turn your conservatory into an extension and let you get away with the conservatory rules.

Decided to try this and see how it worked. Cost all in was just under £2k.
Over winter it has been usable, although still takes some energy to keep fully warm.
The big losses are the glass (obviously), the poor fitting french doors and the uninsulated floor.
We’re contemplating ripping out the tiles and laying insulation followed by laminate.

We retained the patio door but at xmas we removed the leaves for the day to open up the area for a family dinner.

We’ve not seen the hottest weather yet with it, but thermal gain on the hottest days has been far less than previously.

Ask any European office worker visiting the UK and they’ll advise you to use a key in the earth pin hole while you forcefully shove the euro plug into the live and neutral holes…

The above is not advice to be taken.

In the real world – this happens very regularly and would be enough to test the unit before rewiring to a BS1363 plug!

The crucial question is ‘would you have bought it were it advertised at the price you paid?’

Once the goo comes out it won’t go back in.

The goo is where the pixies live – once the case is broken like that, all the smoke comes out and the pixies die; the machine will not work until you install a new capacitor full of smoke and pixies…

The entire scheme smacks of political spin and brinksmanship.
Bearing in mind the furlough scheme is likely to be ‘paid back’ as future tax breaks for businesses, I really can’t get my head around this advice.

You’ll effectively be asking your ex-employer to lend you 80% (upto £7500) of your old wage for three months.

How many companies do you know that can manage that sort of additional expenditure for their existing staff – never mind ex-employees…

I’d imagine a new one will be a lot lighter than an old treated one soaked in several decades of steam oil which are around 90kg each.

    They’re also smaller – old ones were 8’6″x10″x6″ (2600x250mmx150mm).

With nice square edges you’ll be fine cutting from both sides with a circular saw, especially if you’re not trying to do anything fancier than cut them to length.

Are you talking about sleepers, or just big lumps of tanalised wood from the garden centre?

I did a raised bed with real sleepers a couple of years ago with a half lap joint (but with sleepers on edge for height) drilled through and pinned to hold the joint together and into the ground to hold it in place.

To cut that joint I used a circular saw from each side, which left a bit in the middle uncut – the first joint I finished the cut with a handsaw, the remainder got a smack with a sledgehammer!

Bear in mind, the hard part was not cutting, but dealing with the years of creosote soaked into the wood and the weight of the things.

You won’t be lifting them onto a table saw easily – my workbench was the lawn and a few blocks of wood to prop one end of them off the grass.

I had a later mode L2 after a vivaro and kept it for less than a year.

What should be a much nicer place to drive just wasn’t – cheap seats, rubbish engine, nasty gearbox and shocking visibility.

Added to that, the middle seat is a waste of time as it’s too narrow, yet because of that, the passenger gets an utterly horrific seat to match.

Even the L2 (lwb) version required bikes to be packed with front wheel turned.

The connect is not classed as a Car Derived Van so you’ll have to stick to Van speed limits too.

Other than height restrictions which were rarely an issue, I’d have a proper van over the mini-one any day.

Unless you’re going to get really fancy and build slipring couplings into your turntable design, you’ll want to install a stop on the turntable to prevent rotation beyond 360 degrees (or maybe even 180 degrees depending on the brief).

After that, just make sure you specify quality cables and provide a chafe free route for them.

Usually cables will have a bending radius spec, but you won’t see this when buying a cable assembly.

Aim to do the bending over a space of 8-10″ and you should get a reasonable compromise between cable life and tidyness.

Also worth bearing in mind that you’ll want to secure the cable to the back of the tv, not rely on the connection into the plug/socket as that will strain it and eventually knacker the tv instead…

Avgas is ethanol free and will remain so as lots of aircraft fuel cells are made of rubber that doesn’t like it.
It’s about 150% the price of forecourt fuel and even higher octane though.

Some microlights use road fuel but also don’t like ethanol so they must be doing something.

Most standard transits won’t even carry anyehere near a ton legally mine include

    That’s bollocks but go on.

The maximum payload ratings at 3.5 tonnes for each Ford Transit body size are as follows:

FWD L2H2 panel van: 1,446kg (1,393 kg with the automatic gearbox)
FWD L3H2 panel van: 1,366kg (1,313kg with the automatic gearbox)
    RWD L2H2 panel van: 1,319kg
    RWD L3H3 panel van: 1,256kg
    RWD L4H3 panel van: 1,111kg
    AWD L2H2 panel van: 1,216kg
    AWD L3H2 panel van: 1,153kg
    FWD L2H2 DCiV: 1,289kg
FWD L3H2 DCiV: 1,205kg (1,152kg with automatic gearbox)
    RWD L2H2 DCiV: 1,159kg
    RWD L3H2 DCiV: 1,095kg
    RWD L4H3 DCiV: 947kg
    AWD L2H2 DCiV: 1,059kg
    AWD L3H2 DCiV: 992kg

You are aware that you also need to put people and fuel in the van too aren’t you??

Beside the point – put 1000kg of fibreglass, insulation, windows and a bed in one of the above vans and suddenly it’s capable of doing car speeds…

I can top the lot of you…

Ordered a laptop and accessories for work from eBuyer over the xmas break.
Rather than having to wait at home for it on the Friday, I decided to pay extra to have it delivered to work as I was due to be at work all Saturday for the annual stock-take.

It was marked as dispatched on Thursday so all would have been fine for the free next day delivery had I wanted it. On Saturday morning, I kept checking on the tracking portal but it wasn’t updated to “on the van”. Eventually at 1030 the status changed to “we’re not delivering it today”.

As they hadn’t attempted delivery, there was no possibility to manage my parcel or contact details for the depot – so I ended up on the web chat.

Over an hour later I found out that apparently it hadn’t been delivered as they don’t deliver to business addresses on Saturdays – yes, even Saturday specified deliveries!!!

The operator informed me that it would be delivered on Monday (site closed) and address couldn’t be altered until delivery attempted and I also couldn’t collect from the depot as 48hrs notice is required.

Not the first problem I’ve had with Ebuyer and Yodel, the last time I had next day delivery yodel just decided to not load it on the van for two days…
I won’t be using them again!

I’m not sure that Barra is really the best example of an airfield you could use here

It’s the only one I’m daft enough to fly a drone near! 🙂

However, I’m not sure the software could tell the difference – a no fly zone is a no fly zone from what I can tell.

The no-fly zones set by DJI are available online.https://www.dji.com/flysafe/geo-map

Strangely there is not a blanket ban around licenced aerodromes, even if they were only active during licenced hours – many small aerodromes operate only limited hours on a licenced basis. Most of the no-fly zones are the huge airports or prisons…

I considered this question earlier this year.

Like you, I was a little out of the game with respect to specs and building, but did quite a lot of research to work out what I needed.

After deciding the spec, I looked at bespoke builds and buying parts before settling on a PCSpecialist box that was reduced at PCWorld.

It was cheaper to buy this unit (delivered next day) than it was to buy the parts – and I got an easy warranty with a national chain.

Have a small pot of soapy water ready for smoothing down, apply half as much as you think you need to then with a very wet finger lightly smooth over.

You’re not trying to force the silicone into the corner and spread it everywhere, just smoothing the bead into one continuous bead that touches both sides of the joint.

usually people apply too much and then end up spreading the excess three quarters of an inch up the wall!

I decided on the straight forward Picadilly line option last time I went that way.

Especially LHR to KGX it was a breeze – just watch out on the return leg as there can be big queues at the KGX entrance to the tube – this may or may not be better than any queues for the heathrow express.
