Working with people who were born in the 90s.

Realising with horror that I’m older than my boss…

Secret lives of our streets, about social change in housing. Based around London but pretty good apart from that. Has some interesting history interwoven with a bit of life story.

A4 avant with the same engine here (130bhp 6 speed) – I never seem to get more than 43mpg – even on a run, though that is a real fill-to-fill calculation. I think there’s something wrong as I don’t particularly hoof it, but everyone seems to get better. The engine’s on 149k, which may or may not be an issue.

It’s still a revelation compared to the 22mpg of my old V6 quattro though!

I’ve done it. Worked ok and never came off or seemed to squirm about – and I run 30psi or less. You’re probably not giving them their full potential though. Those 2.35s are MASSIVE, I decided they were just too heavy and draggy, so switched to 2.1s…but I am a bit of a lightweight mincer.

Also, condenser tumble driers aren’t as efficient as you might think. We got the one Which recommended and, using a hygrometer to measure it, the house humidity rises by nearly 10% when it’s in use, and stays elevated for a couple of hours.

That’s true, ideally you’d have a conventional one vented to the outside. It’s certainly going to make a massive difference over leaving clothes drying in the house or on radiators though, as 100% of that moisture would be going into the atmosphere inside the house.

Sometimes I put two slices of bread into my Dualit toaster, but inadvertently leave it on the single slice setting, thereby ending up with one toasted slice and one slice of hot floppy bread.

PS – OP: point 1) Surely you poke the vent hole in with a biro? Perfect flow rate every time.

Could someone please tell me.. what is an arthroscopy and what injuries require one?

    Ta

Technical term for a ‘keyhole’ procedure. With the knee, they’ll usually make three tiny incisions. Two for the surgeon’s instruments to do whatever they need to do and a third for a tiny camera so they can see what the hell they’re doing.

It can just be investigative, or they may actually go in to fix something. I had an investigative arthroscopy about two years after tearing my acl. I was riding gently about two weeks later, but as others have said, I avoid pushing big gears and running. I think that’s more a result of the original injury than the arthroscopy, though.

Went with a group to Spain with Seasonallyunadjusted in 2008 – it was superb and I’d go again like a shot if finances would allow. Great trails, weather and coaching.

Jim who ran it used to be on here as ‘Seasonallyunadjusted’ I think – not sure if they are still going?

As above, there’s no way that you should have sodden carpets from condensation only.

We had mould problems in a 60’s 2 bed double glazed ground floor flat we rented a few years ago. There’s only so much you want to have the windows open during mid winter. A dehumidifer helped a bit, but what pretty much solved the problem overnight was the addition of a good sized airbrick (about the size of 2 standard bricks) in each of the rooms with external walls – one in the living room and the dining room at one side of the flat and another in our bedroom at the other side – therefore allowing a flow of air all the way through the property. Getting a condensing tumble dryer rather than drying clothes in the flat during winter also made a massive difference.

As you seem to have the ventilation side nailed, I’d say there has to be water getting in somewhere. Warm air rises – so why would it condense to that extent on the carpet? Cold floor tiles perhaps.

The 1,600 a month on nursery prevents any savings

How many kids do you have exactly?!?!?

If I put our daughter into nursery 5 days a week, rather than just the 2 days she has currently, then the fees would be £1451 a month… 8O

Before kids – about £250 per month…now I just struggle to get all the bills paid. Nursery fees and then with the second sprog due soon, going down to a single income means savings are but a distant dream.

This all ties into the recent ‘Child benefit’ thread and subsequent ‘Does a £44k salary make you rich? tangent…I’d say not with a family to raise in the South East, no.

I’m just going to take issue with the definition of the word “elite”. To be honest, top 10% doesn’t really sound elite. Top 1% sounds more elite. Like championship compared to premier league, or world’s best armies or something.

Also, how do you measure richness? Is it disposable income or income earned? If you took on a big mortgage to ensure your wife and kids had a permanent roof over their heads, and that took up a large share of your [sole] income, would that make you rich? Even if you couldn’t afford to go on holidays, or drive anything but a beat up fourth hand car that you had to fix yourself?

I’m willing to bet you would not feel rich in that situation. Level maybe. Struggling possibly. Not rich.

This is me…I don’t feel rich by any means. Perhaps if you live outside the South East or bought a house in the mid ’90s, yes. But I also don’t feel I deserve to receive benefits.

I went with Avon ZZ3s in 235/45 R17 on my A4 TDi. £105 per tyre and doing nicely so far. Bought through National Tyres on Ebay, so good for using up any PayPal balance that you’ve accrued through selling off a shedful of old bikey bits.

I figured Avon was British and that they were good enough for 70s F1 cars so should be good enough for me! No discernable difference in terms of performance between them and the Dunlop SP Sports that they replaced.

Well put Ernie! Finally somebody speaking some sense! OP needs to get over his borderline racism and not blaming foreigners before getting his facts straight. It might have been somebody from Slough or somebody from Poland, who cares? The nationality of the thief is not the issue.

Quite so, but I was referring to this – though his point is generally valid. Just being a pedant I’m afraid. Saying it was foreigners is not racism.

Wow – I love this place. Thanks for all your speedy replies.

Northwind – I suppose that’s right really. My bonus (not big!)and company car allowance are all funds that I rely on each month to pay the bills, so that lump sum figure is important. Equally, say the new job did not, for instance, include a pension contribution, then that is something I would have to factor in to paying out of my own pocket.

Brycey – It seems honesty is the best policy as it’s a big corporation to big corporation move too, so they may well check.

Garry & Druidh – Good points too!

I think I’ll be upfront and argue my case as to what I feel I’m worth to them – but it really annoys me. I immediately feel like I’m being put on the back foot and shouldn’t really have to reveal my earnings to them without a job offer on the table! Does saying ‘I’d rather discuss that should the need arise’, or something similar, come across as a confident answer, or just evasive?

    *Goes off to do sums*

Our young men would have been decimated fighting for the EU Fourth Reich on the Russian front.

    ooooooh tasty.

there’s a certain school of historical thought that would suggest that the uk fought both world wars to fight inevitable german hegemony in europe and ultimately failed in the attempt regardless of the result of both world wars after 90 mins.

german domination of the eu post wwii is the proof of this theory’s pudding.

A good point! – although modern Germany under Merkel is not quite the same as Nazi Germany under Hitler…

We had this same conundrum a couple of years ago (18 month old sharing our bedroom in a one bedroom flat) We were lucky to be able to rent to friends and keep quiet on the mortgage front as all our mail was still able to be sent there…I did worry about being found out at any moment though.

When they decided to buy a place of their own, I didn’t think for a minute of letting it out ‘properly’ – way too much worry over agent’s fees, having it unoccupied with a mortgage to pay, damage etc etc. We sold in the end earlier this year and although it went for 10% less than the asking price, I felt that was about right and we had still made a little on it despite doing a hell of a lot of work on it ourselves since we bought it. If you have work to do to make it ‘lettable’ too, then I would definitely say to sell instead.

Remember that in a falling market, as long as you want to trade up, you’re probably ok. e.g. If your house was worth £100k and has lost £20k, it’s likely the £200k house you want to buy has dropped by a similar percentage too. (Presuming a similar area blah blah blah etc.)
