In a true recommend what you have style, I have had a garmin 35 for about 6 months now and I can’t fault it.

I went for the first time last year after every man and his dog had told me it’s great.

I now call it Shitby, never again.

I did that trip last september but for 2 weeks it was awesome. For a weekend no way.
If you’re doing a weekend maybe fly to Geneva hire car stay at bourg and ride there. There is more than enough riding for two weeks never mind two days.
The drive down to Ventoux was not particularly fast either. Unusual for France

Hopefully 6 larger copies will be higher quality content wise than 8 normal. But no complaints here.

Yes, you need to find the broadcast heart rate setting. I do it from my forerunner35 to my edge 800.

Hi Ric, I tried 2x on the Pipedream and hated it. Have since moved that back to 3x for local riding as I spend all my time in big ring. On the Nukeproof I have 2x which works quite well for it. I would like to try 1x 12 speed on the Np, it seems to cover the range that I would like, but it costs a fortune just to try.

    *Update*

I took the bike out for a test ride before our Alps trip in a few weeks yesterday.

In the end I went for some clearance Superstar 1500g wheels, Conti GP4000’s, light tubes and a 10 speed 11-32 XT cassette. This has shaved over 800 grams over what came fitted with 500g + off the back wheel.

The bike rode like I always thought a road bike should. Before it was nearly as much hard work as my lightweight MTB. Yesterday it felt really quick even though I had done 50 miles the day before off road.

A great upgrade for under £300 quid, roll on the Alps

And thanks for the input, even the ones I have ignored.

Just read the inrng article and it mentions that attacks on the mountains not being made to stick. I wonder if is because there is a more level playing field these days. Lets hope all the big boys are clean.

    Hi MCD

Laneside in Hope is OK but we were there on opening weekend and things were still getting going. If you can go the other side of the hill the Hayfield campsite is very nice.

    Thanks all

So I will upgrade the tyres and buy some metal backed pads for the brakes.

What are the recommended replacement pads? links anyone?

Wobbli I could be interested in taking them off your hands. Drop me a mail on hall – s at sky .com. I’m not to far away from you being a Ilson lad.

I’m unlikely to ever wear anything out on it. Maybe the odd brake pad.

You’re all basically saying dont spend money on bike upgrades. Are you feelin ok?

The brakes take a lot of pulling for not a lot of stopping (maybe i’m to used to one finger braking with 203 rotors). I was thinking of the Ultergras because they have this double pivot thing.

Tyres etc im just trying to make it as easy as possible for a fat middle aged bloke to get up big hills.

Sorry for the hijack but kind of on topic, I want an 32 tooth 10 speed cassette for my road bike. what options are out there. Do I stick an XT on or is there a road equivalent.

How much would 60 nights a year cost me in a b&b?

Discussing it the other day, our joint income is about £42k, three times that just about buys the cheapest property in our village housing estate. Really worry for people coming through now, it’s madness.

Fixed, no need to thank me.

I’ve never gone for 11 speed as the range didn’t seem big enough for my liking.
But this could tempt me. Need to head to Sheldon’s gear site to do some calcs.

I’m heading down in mid June. Does anyone have any campsite recommendations? Know when the lifts open? Or have any GPX’s of the area?

    Sorry for slight hijack…

Doesn’t it just seem a bit pointless? I can see the real benefit of going to 1x on the front but what real function does 12 speed serve over 11 speed? (and if you like 11 over 10 and 10 over 9 etc etc)
You don’t see people stopped on hills going ‘well I would have been able to get up there if I had 12 gears instead of 11’

The amount of people pushing very expensive looking 1x bikes up the inclines at Llandeglla at the weekend would say some people need quite a few more gears.

Where does all this money they spend go? On wages. They don’t burn tenners to get these things in orbit. So the money just goes back in to the system.

I picked up a 900 quid gaming laptop for 700, well chuffed. Especially as I’m not particularity fond of the whole Black Friday thing. Hypocrite me, looks that way.

We drive down twice a year. We drive to Folkstone after work on the day we break up and camp at a pub near the tunnel. Then a early morning train over to France, then drive down, arriving in the northern Alps around teatime. Had some real laughs getting the tolls totally wrong.
