A bump for the evening crew to see if anyone has any news on trail conditions down that way…

Anyone been up to Edmundbyers or Blanchland recently and know what conditions are like? Was thinking of heading down there tomorrow but won’t go if the moors are all chewed up.

    PS To the OP:

Max dose is 150mg in 24 hours, spread over 2-3 doses.

If you want to know anything about a particular drug, ask a pharmacist, not a GP.

GPs study a minimal amount of pharmacology at university, their expertise is not in drugs.

Any decent pharmacist will be able to tell you everything you need to know (with a good degree of accuracy too!)

Well, that’s my 6 year medical degree, 5 years postgraduate work, and postgraduate degree down the drain then…

Wish they’d told me I didn’t have to know about those pesky drugs BEFORE the exams…

Well, the red is a bit of a mud bath in places and the shiny new bike is no longer shiny!!

The wind wasn’t too bad other than right up the top on the exposed moor.

Cool, thanks. Think we’ll be heading round the red as my friend has just bought a shiny new full suss.

I’m thinking of heading down there this afternoon – any idea what conditions are like?

    Woop, found it!

And, FWIW, a medical 5ml syringe (non-luer lock, for those that care about such things) doesn’t quite fit in to the grease port but covers the opening so you can just force the grease in.

I didn’t know how much to put in, so just filled it up till it was coming out the other side!

    Thanks Taff and Matthew.

Weirdly, for a girl, I quite enjoy fettling things on the bike. My boyfriend thinks I’m mad. And I quite often make things worse than they were. Ho hum. Off to tinker now…

Just wanted to say thanks to theflatboy for posting that link to the £3 Zekler glasses. Mine arrived yesterday and were great around Kielder today. Money well spent!

And have a look at Derek Purdy’s books for routes in County Durham and Northumberland, some excellent rides in there. I’ve converted a few to GPX files but not had a chance to actually ride most of them.

+1 for cyclemeter. And dailymile keeps tabs on how many doughnuts you’re burning off (no, really, it converts calories burned to doughnuts!)

Cyclemeter. Doesn’t drain the battery too much.

Can you register 2 amazon accounts to one kindle? If you can’t, I think my other half might be abusing my account rather a lot on our joint kindle!

Can someone put some more NE England routes up? I’m bored of mine!

Good work! I’m starting to add some trails in the NE of England, hope that’s OK.

I don’t think the French carry over the Bank Holidays like we do, although if they have 2 Bank Holidays in quick succession, they often add in extra ones in between (known as a “bridge”).

Get paid the same as every other working day, to be the most senior medic in your local hospital, looking after 600+ inpatients. Can’t wait.

    Any news from GT today?

I’m thinking of heading up there tomorrow with my occasionally mountain biking boyfriend. If we did, we’d probably stick to the blues around the top car park, maybe going up to Spooky Wood on the fireroad to do that descent. He’s not a confident (or fit!) mountain biker – am I mad to even consider it?

A Year Ago Today… by Legolam, on Flickr

My commute along the A69 from Newcastle to Carlisle was a little chilly last year …

I have one from a couple of days later that shows -15.5C

I have this Edinburgh Bikes rack: 3-bike rack

It carries 2 adult hardtails securely, and 3 adult bikes fairly well (need to turn the handlebars of the middle one to fit them all). Had it over 18 months and, for £69, it’s done the job perfectly.

How many of those 45% of first timer transfers would have gone ok if they’d stayed at home? Nobody knows do they, but I bet it would be a high proportion

    But, crucially, not 0%

Markyboy – oh how embarrassing! It almost certainly was me. I was probably texting the person who suggested that I go to Glentress, telling them how much bloody effort that climb to Spooky Wood took!

Mincing is when you go really slowly downhill, dragging your brakes, slowing everyone down and creating braking bumps. Generally being a big scaredy pants/big girl!

Well, I had an ace time at GT! What an awesome place. Totally knackered now (I guess I’m not as fit as I thought I was!) but very happy. And Radoggair waved! Top day.

P20 – thanks for the offer, but unfortunately it’s a flying visit en route to seeing my folks in Edinburgh. We should meet up sometime though, I’m getting sick of mincing around Newcastle by myself!

I’ll probably leave my pressure suit at home for this one ;-), and will instead be sporting a rather fetching red and white helmet that matches my bike :-D

I’ll think about it, but I might be too busy mincing :-o

Cyclemeter logs more data about your ride than I could ever hope to go through, and I love it. I also use Memory Map to download and plan routes. Would echo the point about it being helpful for last minute bail outs or route changes, and has been invaluable in making sure I’m never (properly) lost.

I got it almost perfect, then tried to adjust it one last time and now it’s rubbing all the way round again!!

All hints and tips gratefully received though

Weird. I just posted about exactly the same problem. Seemed to get a little better after re-greasing, but hasn’t gone completely. Is it easy to replace the bearings on V8s?

Cardiology registrar here – love that it gives me all of the fun of chatting to people on the ward and in clinic, with some procedures thrown in to the mix, and the odd exciting emergency to keep me entertained.

I’m a hospital doc, qualified just over 5 years ago and am currently about halfway to becoming a consultant. I went straight into medicine at Uni from school.

I couldn’t agree more with what FunkyDunc has said. Pay particular attention to points 2-7. Although we don’t work crazy long hours any more, that means our pay has gone down too (not to mention several years of pay freeze). Don’t underestimate the stress of either moving every 4 months or putting up with huge commutes (I commuted from Newcastle to Carlisle every day of last year, 130 mile round trip).

The job situation is also difficult. There is no guarantee of a job like there used to be, and you have to sit several expensive and difficult exams post graduation to even be allowed to be eligible for those jobs. Medical schools are putting out far too many graduates for the number of consultant posts and Trusts are trying to get rid of as many junior doctor posts as possible to avoid having too many consultants without jobs.

Despite all this, I would do it all again in a heartbeat. I’ve worked jobs that are 9-5 and I bloody hated it. I couldn’t work in an office and at least as a doctor I have some sort of autonomy. I occasionally make a difference to someone’s life, but I mostly enjoy that every day is different, and I get to meet people from every conceivable part of society both as colleagues and patients.

Of that little list, I think the bridleway above Edmundbyers is my favourite (think it might technically be in County Durham, but never mind)
