I am no fan of 29ers generally but these look nice. I still wasn’t sure about the looks of the Proto but those graphics make it work.

What 29er tyres do you recommend for south coast mince-core urban uplifts Dom? 😉

the best way to deal with the inevitable problems caused by the stack up of tolerances across different parts and manufacturers, is to design adjustment/accommodation of on-the-piss-ness into any assembly…

    ^ this.

This is the reason caliper brakes have barrel adjusters and QRs, discs (hydro or cable)would need the same quick easy adjustment.

I agree with mustard and can back up what he says from experience. A good wheel change can the difference between getting back onto the bunch or a ride back to HQ…

Is investing in Gold at the moment still a runner?

looks like it has levelled off and even dropped a bit since July so maybe reached a medium term peak?

Is being loved, cared for and feeling safe not more important than cultural identity? It is a tough one though.

so what have gollywogs got to do with adoption?

    And this WTF?

Does it have to be on a tarmac track? My girlfriend and I did a rally experience and we got loads more driving than friends doing track experiences and we were each really allowed to rag them. It was knackering too, much more involving than driving a road car at 70%

    Al, you said

property has risen in value without them really thinking about it

which hardly implies shrewd investment acumen. Most likely they viewed it as a home not a “property” though it can be hard to imagine with all the property programmes on TV.

And if it is purely an investment which they happened to live in, CGT of some form should be paid.

@monkeycmonkeydo I hope that is a troll but I’ll chomp anyway. An occasional hangover isn’t having an alcohol problem and if you think top athletes don’t have more than a few drinks occasionally you’re an even bigger fool.

@MSP I prescribe zinc tablets for that

Thing about IHT is it hits the middle classes whose property has risen in value without them really thinking about it

So “free” money then? Being taxed on that doesn’t seem unfair to me.

1 nuun tablet before I go out for a ride, water in a camelback during and if I feel dehydrated I will have another half tab when I get back.

Why only a folder? I’ve got some supertacky highroller single ply wire beads that are still considerably lighter than the dual ply versions.

I already run idscs on my commuter/trainer. They are 160mm rotors though. They handle 50mph descents no problem. Loads better than rim brakes. Rim brakes are history.

    Are they hydro discs?

I like the idea of discs for road bikes, carbon rims in the wet and even the dry sometimes are horrible for braking, I just don’t see 140s as realistic.

Fair enough, I’ve just bought some m810 Saints for my big bike for this summer as they’re meant to be amazing. I’ll still use 200/180 discs though.
And the discs on that C59 aren’t shimano!

Hayes, hope and avid. A quick google shows that cooked brakes aren’t something I’ve made up!

Since when can 180s not cope on proper MTB descents?

you’re just being silly now. I’ve been talking about the alps and I’ve seen plenty of cooked 180s when MTBing out there. The C59 shown in the OP is aimed at people who will ride proper races and Grand Fondos, Etapes etc so will need brakes that don’t boil.

Spinergies got banned because they could chop bits of you off, you’d have to be pretty unfortunate to stick any part of you in a rotor during a high speed off.

So my point is even more valid if roadies are going that much faster than MTBers. 140 road hydro discs are too small

EDIT: too slow! (pardon the pun)

40mph is a very conservative top speed for descending on a road bike. I live in South London and can hit 50 no probs on a few roads near here and have to slow to zero for junction etc at the bottom. These speeds can be reached on local road race circuits too so the example given by mike d is relevant.

IS it the same though? I doubt it.

    yes.

70km/h down to 30 for a corner in the same amount of time requires the same amount of energy to be dissipated regardless of the bike.

and where is “here” for your 160s, the Alps?

    leggyblonde

140 hydraulic discs on road bikes don’t make sense unless the rider is just doing flat crits or similar. You wouldn’t dream of running baby discs on an alpine MTB bike, so why would a road bike be any different when the kinetic energy that needs to be dissipated through heat is going to be about the same? The same goes for “general UK” riding, 180ish is sensible both on and off road.

if you pull out the stays a bit, you could put the tug on the inside so that it works on the axle, not the skewer

do you mean bolt-up? You could maybe replace the solid axle with a hollow one and use an allen key skewer with the chain tugs

I am really impressed by my miche primato road hubs. I have used them for 3 cross and a road season with not a single problem and until they got nicked with a bike last week were still very smooth.
