KMC Kool for mega strength and reliability. The shape keeps it on the teeth even when quite slack too.

You can get drilled, slotted and coloured versions if you’re a tart

but your turn of speed and experience is part of your ability to win races. when you won, you were the best of the entrants on that day.

it’s a bit like a powerhouse TTer getting a kicking in an XC race and saying that the best guy didn’t win because the course was too technical.

it’s the middle of winter so get some mud tyres. Michelin mud2 will be your best bet; grippy, light and reasonably fast rolling.

The biggest difference, IMHO, is that the best rider usually wins an XC race, whilst the cleverest rider wins a road race.

Sorry, but that is a load of rubbish!

The best rider will win either race.

I’m actually pretty glad my DIC’s not LIMP. Brilliant!

If you’re not Will Smith, what does MIB stand for?

And despite what we say about footballers chances are they are the best amongst their peers.

    innit.

I agree with your hypothesis. If poor people struggle to do a given sport, the best is only a big fish in a small pond. Gebrselassie is a legend among legends.

Asking for presents is rubbish, if people know exactly what they want they can buy it themselves. I think the point of presents is the thought that goes into them and the (hopefully) pleasant surprise on receiving. If my GF asked me for anything she wouldn’t get it, but luckily she’s not that mercenary 😀

    what wwaswas said

also MTB XC is more time trial like (constant, you control the effort)so ridden more at threshold. Road racing, especially the shorter ones, can be very jumpy and so you will need to be able to go into the red and then recover.

it is still mechanical, the chain isn’t pulled across by magnets 🙄

it will be in the middle (however you define it, £1000-1500?) within 10years, I’d be willing to bet a top of the range groupset on that.

WMB and MBUK are from the same publishers, use the some of the same journos/testers and the same offices I think. Bike radar& cyclingnews are part of the same group too.

MBR is part of a different group including cycling weekly

Usually gear hanger alignment, chain wear e.t.c also need attention.

Di2 can automatically account for gear hanger alignment up to a point and chain wear too. It carries on moving the mech until the chain moves to the next sproket. I’m no shiTmano fan but I’m convinced that Di2 or similar is the way forward for racers and most enthusiasts

it will remain XTR not deore or alvio

why so? if 9 speed, rapidfire, hydro discs etc etc have trickled down, why should electronic shifting be any different?

They surely pay for their own, like in bike racing. In a race, if someone takes me out and ruins my bike, it’s a condition of me being allowed to race that I can’t claim against anyone.

TJ, your saying STW isnt a relevent sample of the cycling poulation at large when the discussion is about would the STW poulation shift (pun intended) to electronic shifting.

    bang on.

I can’t wait for electric shifting to become commonplace for enthusiast cyclists. self adjusting gears and no gritty cables will be amazing, it’ll be like moving from v-brakes (work well in certain conditions but need constant fettling) to hydro discs (work well almost all the time with an occasional big service.)

but you just implied the roads were gritted, so you wouldn’t have….

however if you tried paddy hopkirking it up when the roads were freshly covered, you would have

Surf-Mat, those coaches have snow tyres as well as chains if necessary. Gendarmes will stop you from going up the mountain without if the gritters and ploughs haven’t got there yet.

To the OP, get chains just in case for the last bit and you won’t need snow tyres. As above, practice beforehand!

I have the use of an i-magic if I want and it is still boring. I’d prefer to be unfit than use a static bike. there are so many things to be doing in life, sweating in a garage looking at watts is somewhere near the bottom of the list!
rollers are slightly less boring because you can try no-hands one-leg etc but then it isn’t exactly training…

    230mm headtube on the 64?!!

how tall are you? I’d suggest the 62cm unless you are taller than about 6’5″

    leggyblonde
    Free Member

most cross frames have horiz top tubes to create more space making it easier to get the bike on your shoulder.

for racing, the frame should be as close as possible to your road frame, especially the top-tube length. for general off road use, a size smaller is common, but not more than 2cm otherwise the bike will feel cramped

EDIT: D’oh should have typed quicker.

modern cross isn’t that conservative either…. (caution, willy waving)

probably a good idea for braking and drive, but not so sure about turning? they would need some chain going around the tyre to stop then slipping sideways

gear down to something you can turn slowly without killing your knees. 32-22 perhaps?

you’ll only be freewheeling/waiting on the downs anyway

Let the right one in is a truly brilliant film. I’m not sure I want to see the remake in case it’s too Hollywood
