energy gels are the way forward. I can’t eat solid food in road races, but a Mule Bar or Hi5 gel or two is easily gulped.

Your post is the standard tripe rattled out by someone either close minded enough to think they know it all, or jealous that they can’t afford one

Unless, of course, it’s just another fancy-dan toy for the overbiked sportive set….

    😀

Cracks me up how many non-elites have power meters. Great, it tells you what power you are supposedly putting out, but if you get dropped in a 3rd cat race it’s a bit silly really

Surely it’s better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it?

    <– this

For crits I have a half bottle of something sweet like flat coke, very rarely finish it but even a few gulps can feel refreshing.

Amazing to see how well ASO dealt with the road closures etc compared to LOCOG

Thruxton is also used and crystal palace was a former motor circuit that still has an annual car TT.
Circuit racing is very different to road racing though, for example the pros would never let an early break get a 6min gap otherwise they’d lap the field and it would be game over!

it might be better if you spent the money on one personal lesson getting you up on your feet. They would be more accommodating with times too

if you have reasonable balance (most MTBers should have) you should be standing in a day and could be catching green waves after a few more. Enjoy!

just so you know there’s a big difference between not being lapped and not not coming last! often only the top 10 don’t get lapped

EDIT and intervals do help, the tighter crosses are purely sprint, recover, sprint, recover. You don’t need a turbo though, especially as most cross efforts are out of the saddle on lumpy terrain

radial spokes are fine. 3 out of 4 of my cross front wheels are radial including a 12 spoke with a carbon tub rim which I’ve raced plenty of times with no problem and I try not to mince!

Check out the Limousin. I’ve got family there and have done some fantastic MTB rides in the area. The Monts de Gueret have hundreds of km of marked track, much of it very wooded so similar to the North Downs with a few more rocks and hardly any people! there are the usual red, blue routes etc so there should be something for everyone including a couple of really fun DH tracks.

here’s a blog entry my sister has written.

Stratobiker off here lives near the Monts de Blond which also offer some fantastic XC rides.

The journey to Mimizan or wherever you’re heading isn’t bad either

You can run flat bars (or an MTB for that matter) in most races.
You can’t in the 3 peaks or UCI ranked races such as the national trophy series.

    Hi Rach,

    this is the room ad:

    http://www.spareroom.co.uk/flatshare/surrey/east_croydon/1777740/

It’s a bike friendly house only a few minutes from the trails and 15 mins on the train to Victoria and London Bridge.

I’ll get your email from Shaun.

    cheers

    Philip

I’d like Cav to expand his palmares to become a classics winner.

He’s already won Milan-San Remo but he’s a very explosive rider rather than a powerhouse in the style of Hushovd, Cancellara or Boonen so is unlikely to win Roubaix or Flanders, his physiology is too different.
