I read something on the internet that said gen-z’s can identity middle aged millennials by them wearing ankle socks.

I mentioned this to my wife and she checked with her fashion-savvy colleague. Apparently ankle socks are still ok. When I asked how old her fashion advisor was, it turned out that she’s a middle aged millennial.

The real question is “what aero socks should I wear on my ebike?”

are you experiencing range anxiety? The answer there is to ignore aero and weight and just pack in more batteries.

The question I have is how on earth do you stop mid calf socks slipping down? They soon end up near the ankle.

buy good quality socks. Reasonable ones start at around £20.

Exactly how skinny are your legs?

I assumed that op’s massive gastrocnemius were the issue.

I never wear my socks pulled up, why would you?

because it’s fashionable. Until it isn’t

Am I the only one who thinks mid calf socks look a bit geeky?

failed at engineering, failed at fashion. What is the 3rd path on which you find yourself travelling?

the only mid calf socks I have that stay up are fairly pricy ones from defeet, pongo and the like. They’re nice socks though so I don’t mind having spent a bit on them.

you get what you pay for.

Jesus* sandals.  Then the length of your socks really wont be the talking point.

Jesus, well Birkenstock (my personal messiah) sandals and mid-calf socks are what mainstreamed this sartorial insurgence.

Or keep them clean at least.

    /preying hands emoji

I wear trainer socks causally with shorts, to minimise tan lines and not look stupid

    username checks out

I imagine that spending time in the company of old folk inspires him to stay contemporary.

The event is the loser. I honestly think the organisers will be in crisis management mode now deciding whether or not they put out a statement and apology.

I think that they are enjoying the amount of exposure the event gets by not scoring Brendan higher.

Fair enough. I’ll be honest, I know more about 8 year olds than I do e-bikes!

“Do you think it should be OK to give an 8 year old a bike that weighs as much as they do with a 600w max motor and let them loose on the roads?”

They’re considered as bikes, then separately classifying them becomes open to different interpretation so I don’t think it’s helpful to have them separate.

They’re speed limited and there is an argument that kids travelling closer to the traffic speed and not having to pedal as hard may be better as they can focus on control rather than motion.

mrhoppy are you seriously suggesting thst it would be a good idea to give an 8 year old an e-bike and let he or she loose on the road?

I understand that e-bikes are concerned about the image of their machines and the possibility of them no longer being classified as bicycles, but there should be an age limit on using them on the road, and it’s probably wise to put an age limit on their use in a bike park.

That said, I completely agree with your opinion that a well behaved under 14 on an e-bike in the supervision of a responsible  adult is unlikely to cause an issue to anyone, but rules aren’t made for sensible people.

My (conspiracy) theory is, the organizers believe that if he wins he won’t return to defend his title. As he’s the most popular rider (in my house, at least) they need keep him coming back year after year so that people keep watching. Without Brendan, Rampage would be nothing!

I would rather they rode natural lines without the big jumps and tricks and focused on line choice

id prefer it to me more like that, but I doubt that there are any natural lines that could be ridden without some trail building.

HOW THE F*** DO YOU LEARN THAT IN CORNWALL?!!!….  has got to be the quote of the year from Ollie Wilkins in Deaks latest video here, said about Tom Isted testing a run.

i enjoy their videos. Their irreverent style is a contrast to the North Americans’ seriousness.

There have been more than a few topics where rogue builders have been completely castigated so how is this any different?

isnt the usual concern that it will lead to more animosity towards mountain bikes and risk having access removed?

That absolutely doesn’t mean it will only happen once in a hundred years, or if it happens today it must have happened a 100 years ago indeed there is no reason why it can’t happen multiple times in a few years or even multiple times in the same year

I realise most people know this on here…but I need to vent.

I hear you. I don’t think the news reports were even taking that approach to the statement. It was simply pure bullshit.

This is once in a generation storm.

while I appreciate that this is a very big storm and not wanting to belittle the impact it will have, when I lived in Houston in Texas the place would flood every winter and every winter the floods would be described as the worst floods in the last 100 years. That did make me wonder how bad the floods were 100 years ago.

Blimey Charlie, the last time I didn’t get to ride for that long I was probably in nappies. I’m 62 now!

all the best for the op and recovery.

I was off my bike for 4 months from early spring. it crossed my mind yesterday that that was the longest time I’d not ridden for longer than I could remember. The odd thing was, for some of that time I didn’t even think about bikes!

If someone thinks they are a good parent then I suspect one of three things:

    1: their child is “easy”

2: they are actually a bad parent

3: they are a good parent, but this is highly unlikely

from what you say about disturbing your tv time and being grumpy in the morning, this sounds pretty normal to me.

as for being happy with their friends and hostile with you, also normal. When they are out the house they have their game face on. At home they can relax.

They are probably also tired. If they are polite and engaged in public, you are  doing something right.

and you’ve enrolled them in an active they enjoy, this is good.

then there is the personalities to contend with. Not everything is down to nurture.

humans weren’t meant to be raised in houses separated from the rest of their clan. I’m not even sure if parents are the best places people to be raising children. Seems like a job for grandparents rather than the busy ones

We’re forecast to get 28 mm of rain today! This will be the first day since the beginning of the challenge that I won’t have ridden my bike.

I thought after being lairs up for four month  I’d be in worse shape than I am.

    turbo, weights and stretching today.

If you are going to pass the hat round for money, then it should be a major challenge for an individual.

it’s for a charity that helps underprivileged children. It’s hardly begging, it’s raising money for charity by doing something entertaining you miseryguts.

How did I guess the Briskers would be there, despite this “When it’s proper cold you’ll need something beefier”? So, not a winter glove then.

how cold is proper cold? Briskers are fine for me at around freezing.

E-Enduro’s World Cup is to be ‘paused’, although it appears that the E-Enduro World Series may continue

I thought the World Series was the World Cup. This makes me realize how much I don’t understand mountain bike racing

Interesting. Am I right in thinking that you are about to quit, but you are worried that something that you’ve done on your computer may give your boss the leverage he could use to force you to stay?

so you’ve not been skiving. What have you been doing?

that is a tough year. I hope your recovery picks up and is complete

I know this may sound controversial or anti-dog and doesn’t actually help, but I’m amazed that it is permitted to let dogs off of leads in public places (aside from areas that are specifically for dogs). It is very rare in my experience that an off lead dog is actually under the slightest control.

2FO have a grippy sole and are a different shape to free ride pro. The dh versions have a stiffer midsole if you prefer that. Worth a look. Probably on sale on the specialized website or in stores.

from poking the ride concepts in a shop the sole felt quite hard to me, but they seemed like well made shoes.

I had the precursor to the unparallel shoes, teva. they aren’t wide. I believe that all the unparalleled shoes are built on the same last

Las Vegas has become very expensive in the last couple of years, so I’d check prices before booking. Food was very cheap a while back but it seems that they are trying to take the town up market.

that said, everything in the US has gotten very expensive.

and like people above have said, check that the weather will be like at times that you plan to be there.

Crazy thing is if there was a button on this website or Pinkbike that said watch for $x and I could just watch it then I would pay. Roping me into some subscription where I have no interest in the rest of the content, no thank you.

    I agree with this.

I like DH, but I’ve only seen the highlights since the coverage changed and I’m not going to subscribe to discovery

But the base epic is about 40% more expensive than the most expensive chisel.

as an aside, my local specialized dealer which is owned by specialized, no less has 2 high end epic evo 8’s and a couple of stumpjumpers at over 11,000 Canadian, but they have no plans to stock the Chisel FS.

I guess they know their market, but the chisel isn’t that far from the epic evo and they already have the new status, do it isn’t the “cheapness”. That said, an inexpensive park bike probably appeals to a bigger market than a similarly priced xc bike.

There’s a rumour doing the rounds that Verstappen wasn’t pressing on the ‘go’ pedal quite as hard as he could’ve done and let Norris go without much resistance as a sort of ‘hurry up’ to the team to provide him with a faster/better car.

wouldnt the team know how hard he was trying from the telemetry?

The lack of resistance to Norris’ overtake on lap18 was startling, I don’t think I’ve ever seen Max give away position so easily like that before.

I was expecting him to make it harder, so perhaps he is trying to  force the team into trying harder. Though I can’t imagine that they aren’t trying their best  already.

That said, I seem to favour riding with my feet 2cm from the inboard edge of the pedals on my normal bike, and that’s on a pedal with an axle gap of about 1cm (so it’s not a shoe crank arm clearance issue). Maybe that’s bad for me and wider would exaggerate it.

this makes me think that you are riding with flat pedals. I always feel that on flat pedals your feet end up where they want to be.

So if you with a  wider Q factor on your e bike your feet would be in the same place in relation to your hips, but the pedals would be more under your feet.

ftom my own experience, I don’t think it will make a difference to your knees

they just wander around oblivious in the road and on the cycleways.

that’s what it’s like when you live in a holiday hot spot that is also a real town.  Visitors to whistler manage to end up driving on the cycle paths

I’d start to remove everything they enjoy, one thing at a time. Sounds harsh but I’m afraid if they are going to live under my roof, they’re going to do what I say, especially when it’s something that will genuinely be beneficial for them.

yes, you’d think that this would work, wouldn’t you?

My son is in elementary school. I know a lot of people with a lot of children. although the catchment area is wide,  most of its intake of the school is from one pretty homogenized and small neighbourhood. It’s a “nice” area.

however, there seems to be no rhyme nor reason to the way an individual child will behave. To assume that a child’s behaviour is entirely down to how they have been raised or that their behaviour in public is the same as at home is just wrong.

not sure what I’m trying to say, but some kids are not too bright, but very polite. Others are bright as buttons, but really struggle with going to school. Some can’t help but destroy things, while their siblings are gentle and kind.

if you have good or easy children you are lucky. If you have a child with big issues, you are unlucky. If you aren’t a natural parent (something you’ll probably discover too late!) you are unlucky. If you’re a great parent but your partner isnt, you are also unlucky.

i have a good child. He’s not easy and is Incredibly strong willed. I struggle at times. What I found most disheartening was that when I was initially struggling the information that I got from parenting books was exactly what I was doing, but it wasn’t working for us. However at school he is engaged in the lessons, popular with his classmates and well behaved.

My recent struggle is getting him to brush his teeth in the morning. I could say to myself, they are his teeth. If he doesn’t brush them, ultimately it’s not my problem.  Unfortunately, that doesn’t sit well with me, so I persist with the struggle. It’s bloody frustrating.

still don’t know what I’m trying to say, but it’s difficult, with all the information that we have easy access to these days it can quickly become perplexing. There is more that one parenting technique and not all parenting techniques work with all children. A neighbour has great success with punishment and reward (naughty step/gold stars kind of thing) while another using the same approach just gets entrenched in battles. Some children don’t want to be controlled in that fashion or end up getting confused by being rewarded for doing the things that they really should just be doing as part of a family (getting a treat for tidying up their toys for example).

Anyway, family holidays are more like business trips than they are like the holidays you enjoyed before you had children.  They can still be enjoyable, but they won’t be the same.

TLDR, parenting is difficult and people are better at it than others. All children are different, don’t respond to the same parenting techniques and are pretty much born with their personalities.
