I found The Death of Marco Pantani by Matt Rendell to be very good, well researched and informative yet unbelievably boring

Graeme Obree’s book was a fantastic read, really recommend it.

I would also recommend Wide Eyed And Legless, especially now that they have re-issued it (after I paid £30 for a copy  )

Final question, and it’s a silly one.

Will the narrow SKS Chromoplastics be ok with 28mm Gatorskins?

    Cheers

Looks like I’m going to go for the 28mm Conti Gatorskins and SKS guards. It would be a shame to put my Crud Road Racer Guards on this frame seeing as it has proper guard mounts.

    Thanks for your help chaps.

I don’t need 28mm, just thought they might be a bit better for the extra grip, a bit more confidence inspiring.

I was looking at the SKS Chromoplastic guards, do they have the mudflap things at the bottom? I couldn’t make it out, some of them seem to, some don’t.

Should have said, tyre doesn’t need to necessarily be 28mm, just wider than the 23mm ones I have been using (a bit more confidence on the wet roads this time of year). I have used Vittoria Open Pave’s last year, excellent tyre, certainly feels wider than the 24mm they are, and very grippy. Unfortunately they wear quickly, cut quite easily and are very expensive. Very grippy though.

It took me four attempts to stop smoking (over a long time period – probably 4yrs or something). The last time I went to a smoking cessation clinic, I also used nicotine patches and lozenges, available on prescription from the smoking cessation lot. The patches were great, had some fantastic dreams when wearing them (go for the 24hr patches!). The lozenges were for when I got a craving, something to pop in my mouth.

You really need to want to quit, if you really want to be an ex smoker then you will be. If you don’t stop this time don’t beat yourself up over it, your time will come.

    Good luck.

Is that the VN Euros ade? I hired one whilst on holiday in Majorca, VERY nice bike.

Not enough deep carbon rims in this thread for my liking.

So here’s another (now with sexy-black bar tape):

Mabel and Oscar (aged 15 years this week!). Poor Oscar, the only peace he gets is when Mabel is asleep. Mabel is proper mental, she’s totally bonkers!

lardlover – is that the frame you’ve just bought? Couldn’t you just get divorced?

That isn’t my frame as such, just a pic to show what mine looks like (until I found my camera and took a pic), pics of my frame are now on Classifieds.

    Divorced? I will be if I don’t get rid………….. 8O

Lard, i think you know Andy, who lives in Morpeth. He’s not on here, but he has a few routes that mix road and tracks from Morpeth. He was off through Harwood and down to Rothbury last week. He also has a very nice custom Kev Winter cyclocross

Name doesn’t ring a bell P20, will probably recognise the face though  Was/is he involved with the TTB’s?

But you should have a go at racing. The NECCL is very relaxed and not too pricey.

I’ll only embarrass myself if I get the frame I’m after. It’s too good a frame, doesn’t stop me wanting it though. It’ll compliment my other ‘that bike’s too good for you’ bike perfectly.

    Hey, we could resurrect:

    NORTHUMBERFEST

    But with a cross twist.

    Now there’s an idea!

Ever been round Thrunton on it Lee?

I’m thinking (if I get one) that I could ride upto Rothbury, stop at the butchers for a Wildebeast burger (Mmmm), then tackle Carriage Drive, then upto Main Stone at Simonside, then back through Harwood Forest to the gibbet road and back to Morpeth. That would be a nice route!

They are the same extenders I have LardLover. Just on using the pump all the air is just gushing out around the pump head.Pump works perfectly on a normal presta valve.

Stupid question (sorry!): The extender isn’t unscrewing a little whilst your pumping is it? (torque from the pump hose?)

Try a 60mm valve in there, then buy a load off ebay. They come up quite often (5 Continental’s for £12 or something).

I think I will be ‘roading-up’ the cross bike if I get it oldgit (as I’d have to sell my other road bike (frameset on classifieds now!). But I’d be wanting a bit of off-road action as well, not necessarily racing.

How deep are your rims?? I’m using 60mm valves on 40mm deep rims and there’s loads of valve poking out. I’d be comfortable using them on 50mm deep rims.

Saying that, I used the Topeak ones for about a year, the ones that look like a presta valve, you unscrew the bit at the top of the extender that in turn unscrews the valve. Inflate, re-tighten. No problems.

Didn’t notice anyone using Campagnolo, any reasons why not? (only asking as that’s what I will be swapping over)

    Let’s talk wheels now.

I’ve got Campag Khamsin’s that I would be wanting to use. Do you they’d be strong enough or should be looking at new wheels before I venture off road?

Not sure where we’ll be bivvying, we thought we’d just get a late cable car out of town and find a nice spot somewhere. Watch the sunset etc, some food, some wine, some sleep (hopefully), then wander back to town the next day. We’ll not being leaving anything behind, what goes up will come back down to the bin.
Repeat another day if we survive the cold/wet/thunder/big dogs!!

Or are we being silly? :|
