I find it interesting reading through the thread on markup that a lot of the calculations people were putting up factored in discount, 10% etc. yet no one here thinks that if I buy a £2k+ bike in cash (well credit card) so no finance no cycle to work scheme etc, I won’t even be able to get 10% knocked off the RRP?

Also I have no local Evans so have about 5 within the same distance and no one thinks I’ll be able to ‘play’ them off against each other as a genuine buyer?

phead, my thoughts exactly, the price tag is “invitation to treat”

I also wondered if anyone could add any truth to posts like this

“Evans cycles run a saturday to saturday weekly sales target so if you’re looking for a good discount your best bet is probably going in on a saturday afternoon when the manager will be trying to makes sales to hit his target.

They CAN discount almost as much as they want, don’t let them bullshit you by saying that the computers or whatever wont allow it. Doesn’t mean they will though. You shouldn’t have any trouble getting 10% out of the normal sales staff but anything more will require manager approval. When it comes down to it, Evans work on around 65-100% mark up so don’t feel bad about taking them to the cleaners if you get a chance.”

It’s from quite a few years ago now.

Some great responses, thanks guys (or gals) and Ben, I do not mean any disrespect, I was hoping for some “insider” knowledge.

I just wondered how Evans can do this

    https://www.evanscycles.com/bikes/hybrid-bikes_c/jamis-brand/2016-model_year/?sort=-saving

for some bikes and not others (this is the brand I’m looking at)

I’m surprised by that comment, do you have knowledge to back it up, e.g. you work in the trade?

I guess Paul’s cycles must be running as a charity the price they are selling some of their bikes at!

Jimmy, the Vitality is why I am restricted :-)
scotroutes, not enough Tesco vouchers to make any real difference.
CaptainF, who said anything about deserving it, but I’m sure the bike I’m looking at will be sold with at least 25% discount if not 40% when the next years model comes out and I don’t think they will be making a loss even at that, so if I can reduce my fairly significant outlay why shouldn’t I? Oh, and I’m Northern and paying full price for anything is against my upbringing.

I’ve got both the Sunrace 11-40 and Praxis 11-40 and I find the Praxis a lot slicker on gear changes, especially dropping down to a smaller cog the Sunrace gives a noticeable clunk whereas the Praxis is near silent and smooth.

Last summer I drove to Chamonix for a weeks riding and on the way my car broke down, what followed was a week of hell, including being dumped in a shopping centre will all my kit and no car and phoning the breakdown service ever evening to find out what was happening with my car which was being moved from garage to garage in the wrong direction (further away from where I was staying).

But every day out on the trails I didn’t have a moments though about the car, I was too consumed by the joy of riding and the amazing scenery.

So in short YES I totally know where you are coming from.

Not wanting to hijack thread and if OP is interested they obviously get first refusal but I’d be interested in some more details on the lurcher?

Another vote for Invisiframe, I got the owner to do my Bronson and it looks great and is really holding up well.

I agree with asdfhjkl, I’ve found the shifters make much more of a performance improvement than the mech.

    Well I’m a convert!

Went for a ride last night with a mix of terrain and gradients and the oval ring felt great and more natural in no time.

In fact when I swapped bikes with a mate so he could try mine, his round ring felt awkward.

At current prices it’ll be cheaper to buy a new 10 speed shifter, mech and cassette than to buy this cassette. If 11 speed is similar then that seems a better option all round.

I don’t get your point, If you are already 10 speed by buying this cassette you can keep your existing drive train and just change from a standard cassette, to get a similar range on 11 speed you’d have to buy new cassette, shifter and chain at a minimum which would cost more than double the price of this cassette

OK another £20 for the Shimano one.

on the subject why have hangers seem to have become more beefy over the years, they used to be a sacrificial item which would self destruct to save the rear mech.

These days the hanger appears to be stronger than the frame it’s attached to!

I’m with Carlos, I looked around for other alternatives but in the end went with the SC tools for both removal and pressing in.

So easy to use and can get the whole job done in minutes now.
