If you can only have one bike, hardtail all the way :-)

Perhaps a hardcore steel frame like a dialled alpine or chromag stylus?

I wouldn’t worry about the bike, just thrash it and then when you have the cash get something else. I ride with a few different people, some have super expensive bikes and others have cheaper one’s.

The fastest rider I know mostly rides a second hand hardtail he put together for about 550 quid. He would fly past the vast majority on expensive full suspension bikes on anything other than a full on downhill course.

Enjoy the bike, it will do the job for a while :-)

I built a bike that was designed for 80mm travel forks and put 100mm on and it rode fine. Go for the 100mm’s.

Pretty damm good. Just got back from a great 4 hour ride, testing the mud tyres which worked brilliantly. Am now about to start reading the sunday paper by the fire with my cat.

It’s seem that sinster frames have a reputation of being able to plow over just about anything and so far the ridge is living up to that :-)

Doesn’t seem to be many of them in the uk, which is a shame as they are so well built and designed brilliantly.

Looks ace! fork is a bit short on travel for a ridge, you can get a 160mm in there no problems.

I loved my sinister, Frank does build some lovely frames.

Ideally I wanted a lyrik, but couldn’t find a cheap one with a long enough steerer. Seems to handle pretty good with the pikes, although if the right fork comes up I will be tempted to swap…..

The frame is awesome, best I have ever ridden. Which version did you have?

Looks like it will be good fun to ride. I was considering a trailstar, but the frames are a bit too small.

I can’t work out why the front looks so tall either, maybe its because you’ve got the saddle too low, and at the wrong angle?

Or is it just the camera angle? More pictures are needed.

Looks good though, frame looks nice. What size is it?

Just a quick camera phone pic, the seatpost and saddle angle have since been changed. Turns out the Giant seatpost is possibly the worlds worst design and has been swapped for a Richey. The front looks high as the saddle is low in the pic.

The frame is a large and with a 400mm seatpost is a pretty good fit for me a 6’3.

Frame is as stiff as a very stiff thing, it will take some getting used to after riding a fairly comfy steel hardtail :-)

Shot on a dslr? I’m way behind the times :-) I think helmet cam can look great, in ‘follow me’ it was mixed in with great success.

Highlights for me were from 15 to 18 sec, cuts and shot choice work really well. 1.07 to 1.09 was cool also. Low angle puddle shot I also liked, but has a jump cut a 1.27 that takes away from it a bit.

I liked it mate. Some creative cinematography and decent music. Maybe fewer focus pulls and creative camera angles and some longer pans would have helped. At the start the cuts were a bit quick, but this got better.

Needs a bit more flow to it in terms of editing and length of shots and would have been nice to have a bit more variety in the riding (jumps, drops, berms)

    Good effort

    Hey Spencer,

I’m not a local, but ride there with a few guys who are. Have a look at kingleyvalemountainbikers.ning.com, there are rides planned every week.

Normally rides are on Sundays and Wednesdays.

    Cheers

Depends how much the cheaper bike is. I can’t see the point of spending more money on something that isn’t going to make much of a difference to how I ride.

Yeah I was bike mad as a kid. :-) I was never that good, but the stuff I learned is still there. Pulling manuals and clearing tabletops is next on the list of stuff to learn. It’s worth learning to bunnyhop as it makes riding more fun and gives you more confidence when jumping.

Cycling proficiency takes me back! I remember around the time we were due to take it a kid went otb and smashed all his front teeth out. Poor Sod.

The things I remember from riding when I was a kid are:

    1. landing on my head after trying a jump and my mother demanding that I wear a helmet

    2. Attempting to bunny hop up a curb, smacking the front wheel into it ,which sent me front flipping over the bars landing perfectly seated on the front wheel. :-)

    3. Not having the bollocks to do a drop in called ‘death’ at the local chalk pits.

    4. Having to bloody ride to every spot as we were not old enough to drive!

Congrats, keep going and you’ll keep improving :-) Just got back into it myself after 15 years out and I’m loving it. The skills are a bit rusty, but i’m improving and strangely I seem to have more bottle than I did when I was younger. Falling off hurts more though.

You have summed up what it’s all about, having fun in the woods with your friends :D

WTF are people hung up on trends and numbers? ‘would like’ a 70mm? Nonsense. What fits, fits. Anything else is just daft.

Because stem length effects bike handling. I’m guessing you are an xc rider who isn’t bothered about jumping gaps and trying to pull manuals Having a shorter stem would fit better with my style of riding, I tried a 50mm and it was too cramped. 90 fits well, 70mm is in between the two so if I could run one it would be better for me. Makes sense?

6’3 with stupidly long arms and legs. I’m now riding a 19″ sinister ridge with a 90mm stem and 400mm layback post. Took it out for a spin last night and it felt pretty good. Don’t think I could get away with much shorter, as much as I would like a 70mm.

I could do fairly big mini’s on a skateboard, but never had the balls to drop in on a proper vert ramp. Kudos for doing it on a bike. No way I could bunnyhop into the transition from the platform. Roll in maybe :-)

Kaesae has been extremely helpful in assisting me with building my bike. He also sent me a free box of parts, including some dmr pedals and a saddle which are both going on the new build.

The man comes across as a bit of an eccentric, but is a top bloke and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend him when it comes to purchasing bike parts or general info.
