BMX rules. I’ll agree that I’m not keen on the no brakes thing in public spaces but most people riding no brakes are pretty cautious around people. There is defiantly an element of fashion

    ahh finally somebody gets it……

I can see the point of it for riding dirt jumps, but street? I don’t get it.

ET was OK on the front in a basket, and they did amazing jumps, so it must be ok…………

but did he have brakes, i can’t remember?

Just doesn’t make any sense to me, riding round cities with no brakes and no helmets.

I used to ride bmx as a kid and still think the racing is awesome, but no brakes for street riding and guys doing backflips without helmets seems a bit far fashion wise.

i have just bought some for my enduro. apparently bikes take a real beating on uplifts, so i thought i’d give her some extra protection.

kudos100, yep agreed. I just can’t quite get my head around why some people are so vociferously anti one type of cycling or another when actually they’re all so interchangeable. Unless it’s just about the bike or the image, and not the riding, which I suspect in some cases it may be.

doesn’t make any sense to me either. as long as people are riding and having fun i don’t care what the bike is.

the image/fashion thing does annoy me a bit, if you don’t have the right jeans, lycra, bike, then you can’t be part of our gang. i’ve threatened to go out with a mate and his roadie group on my hack bike with flats and baggies :D

    @ pedalhead

some ‘hardcore mountain bikers’ have no idea how tough competitive road racing is. the guys who take it seriously are as hard as nails. same with xc racers, some are really skillful, fearless and fast downhill. mucho respect.

i still joke and take the mickey out of them :D

    @jhw

i dont know why so few of the pro’s wear upper body armour, it makes no sense. granted it is not going to stop crashes from happening, but may make the difference between being out for a month and out for the whole season.

take sam hill. perhaps if he was wearing body armour he might be racing now…..

seems a bike like a fashion thing to me. you see it all the time on pink bike and mtb videos, guys doin rb rampage or jumping a 50 ft gap in a t shirt. bit silly if you ask me.

I watched the DH last night and whilst I love riding it I came to the conclusion that it doesn’t work on TV. It’s just not that interesting watching another guy go over the same rock garden over and over again. The drops don’t look that big, the speed doesn’t look that fast and it is difficult to tell riders from each other, hell, even the crash wasn’t that spectacular. It’s got no stories or hidden stuff going on, it is a time trial down a hill and for me at least it makes very poor TV.

i dont think it makes poor tv, but having exactly the same camera angles for every single rider makes it a bit dull. they need to spice it up with a bit more variety and have some commentators going round the pits etc

as for peaty, well he has shown everyone he still has it! i think he is a fading force, but hopefully can grab another wc before he calls it a day.

    @ project.

i have snapped the end clean off my collarbone and broke it in the middle like a twig. i am taking dihydrocodine 3 times a day and cannot stand up for more than 30 minutes without my back and neck going into spasm and feeling sick, so no i cant walk around and get lots of exercise.

cheers for all the suggestions so far, anymore documentaries and movies would be great

broke mine a week ago and went to see a private physio today as the nhs were useless. i am already starting passive movements and i’m sure these will become more challenging as the bone nits.

ignore zulu, crack on with finding a good physio, it is worth its weight in gold.

    @ jack the dog

I definitely fit into the mid range hardtail, shonky second hand full susser group, but working in a bike shop for a bit made me a bit spoilt for choice!

The thing is I ride everything, xc, downhill, dirt jumps, bmx tracks and occasionally have been known to go out on the road on my hack bike.

I could never afford to buy all the latest shiny kit or would want to as i am too tight, but I am a bargain hunting junkie.

. So far all my bikes are a bit limited in one way or another apart from my 24 inch dj bike which is perfect for bmx tracks, street stuff and dj

thinking about it what im after is a selection of bikes/frames that are totally suited to what i ride and there is no need for me to look at anything else, except when things break or wear out.

seriously cool build 8) only things i would change is the forks and a 1×9 setup

The the thing southern yeti, i ride my bikes loads and i am a good rider :P. actually that is not totally true at the moment, i ride my hardtail loads.

I’m of the belief that it is the rider not the bike . my mate who is the best rider i know (used to race national dh), rides probably the cheapest bikes out of all the people i ride with and will never by anything new unless he has too.

I used to work in a shop where the guys would talk about and own really expensive bikes, but never ride! I would always be going out and couldn’t understand why they didn’t want to ride their expensive toys.

both my mate and the guys in the shop obsess about bikes, but one is an amazing rider and the others barely ride.

i dont for a second think that a new shiny bit will make me go faster as i know it wont, but still lust after different bits and pieces.

part of it is gettting back into riding after 15 years and now actually being able to afford the things i couldn’t have as a kid, but i think that mtb’ing disease exists no matter how much you ride or how good you are :-)

Depends how fast you want to go  I took the enduro and rode up the red trail a few times to hit the dh run. I did it with knee pads, compression top and my xc helmet and it was fine, but would take a ff helmet and some upper body armour for a days uplift.

if you want to hit the jumps fast and do all the drops then ff helmet is required imo.

I feel your pain, i broke mine on sunday.

The doctor at the hospital was bloody useless, he didn’t tell me anything other than ‘yes you broke your collarbone and it will take 4-6 weeks’ i had to ask to see the x-ray. the only good thing was they gave me some decent pain killers, so i have been sleeping ok.

i am in the dark as to whether it will heal well so have decided to go and see the private physio i saw when i dislocated my shoulder.

it has only been 4 days and i am bored out of my mind!

the most annoying thing is i was riding a dh track with 25ft tables, 5 foot drops and rock gardens and i smash myself to bits on the kiddies line :(

i have decided that i will always ride downhill and anything slightly risky with body armour. it just isn’t worth the pain or time off……..

Who’d have thought that skills training was some sort of mountain biking class warfare issue. I’m mystified – if people want to learn to ride their bike better and enjoy themselves more as a result, what’s the problem?

This is STW old boy, of course there is a problem.

    kudos100

Pretty sure most people could benefit from a skills course. Rather than spending money on shiny bits, why not spend it on something that actually improves your riding?

‘Just riding’ isn’t the answer, I know lots of people who have ridden for years and may be fit, but have not got much better in terms of skill level.

pro2’s on 521’s. Mine have been jumped and hucked and are still true. For 160mm forks I would go for some lyriks, not a fan of 36’s.

you too ton, hope everything goes ok for you.

I will be getting the turbo out in the next couple of weeks. Cannot bare not being able to do exercise!

I have now decided i will not ride anything even slightly dodgy without a compression top and knee pads. It is just not worth it :(

400 quid is easily enough to build an ok bike. As others have said your best bet is to get a second hand complete with some decent bits on it and swap them over.

Otherwise take your time and pick up cheap bits for next to nothing on ebay and here

    Forks 80 quid Wheels 50 drivetrain 50 brakes 35

leaves you with 185 quid for the rest of the build, with most bits only costing 5-15 quid

Unless he is racing or taking it to the alps a big hit will do the job nicely. So many people buy downhill bikes and never really use the bike for it’s intended purpose.

There is nothing in england that really warrants having a downhill bike unless you are taking part in races or regularly doing 8ft+ drops and massive hucks to flat.
