@wildfire – that’s the beauty of Presta; no need to push in the core. Air pressure alone does it. Should work fine even if the adaptor is “too tall”.

    Regarding:

Presta has no place on a MTB.

Not sure why you think that – might be worth some supporting reasons for your view. IME Presta is generally easier to deal with, cares much less about mud/dirt for inflation, etc. Now those effing Lezyne pumps that seem specially designed to unscrew a Presta core as you remove the pump – those have no place near any bicycle!

Yes, and yes. I have one on a wheel (whichever I inflated last with my compress) of each of my bikes. For pimpiness and gofasterness I opt for alloy, not brass, apators.

It’s generally a good idea to remember after inflation to remove the adaptor, screw the presta valve back closed, and then reinstall the adaptor, but I’ve gone weeks with an unscrewed presta valve and haven’t died yet.

I do always find it odd when the STW spoilsports say of any event, “just download the GPX, do it yourself, and save some money”. Presumably these people never go to live music (just listen on Spotify) or pubs (just drink at home).

I’m paying the money to support an event and organizers I like. But… f*** the midges!

Typical STW responses – no answer to your questions, just a bunch of reasons why you asked the wrong question. I presume @BillMC is driving a Toyota iQ, because everyone buys a car based only on reliability index and no other reasons, whether practical or emotional. 🙄

FWIW I’m with Motoreasy for warranty on a 6 year old BMW estate. Not great, probably not the worst. They have two levels of cover – servicing at a BMW dealer, or servicing at independents (cheaper).

As an aside and as an American I’ve never understood the UK fixation on “full main deal service history”, but knowing I’ll want to eventually sell the car I bucked up the extra fee on the warranty for BMW servicing.

As I understand it, all iP12 models get the full-fat 5G, ie they’ll operate on standard 5G and mmWave – Apple have tested them on over 100 different networks worldwide, so it should hop seamlessly from one to another depending on what happens to be available.

My understanding is that only the US phones will support mmWave. Look at these two tech specs pages from Apple (US & UK), and scroll down to Cellular and Wireless / Mobile and Wireless. According to these pages the UK phones don’t have mmWave as a supported band.

    US: https://www.apple.com/iphone-12-pro/specs/

    UK: https://www.apple.com/uk/iphone-12-pro/specs/

Typically, not much info from Apple, but everything I’ve seen leads me to believe that only US phones will have mmWave. Not that it really matters in the UK right now anyway.

I think we started our regionalized bastardization of English in the neighborhood of 1776, possibly earlier.

I do! But that’s mainly because I’m an American. You’ll find that most of the rest of the world, outside of the UK Australia and Japan, do so as well. Not just “US style” :-)

Sarcasm aside, having lived and ridden in a number of countries around the world, it is interesting to me that a number of “UK-influenced” countries that drive on the left also often have US or Continental brake lever setups including Malaysia, Singapore and South Africa.

Per my comment on another recent thread on this topic and @Drac above, it really isn’t that hard to adjust. I’ve ridden “UK style” brake setup bikes (borrowed or rented) on some fairly gnarly downhill here in the UK, with no issue after the first 15-30 minutes of getting used to it

Having said that, if sides were switched I personally wouldn’t relearn a new setup just for the sake of cleaner cable routing.

I’m not a lawyer, etc, but I don’t understand why his company Pest Control Office couldn’t trademark it. Trademark owner doesn’t have to be a single, identifiable individual, and there are plenty of corporate structures (even here in the UK) that pretty completely obscure the ultimate beneficiaries of the company.

As a Yank, many times I’ve had to ride bikes in the UK “wrong way round” and no problems after a few minutes of settling in. Not for everyone of course, but I think it’s a stretch to say “disaster waiting to happen”.

Seems a bit nanny-ist to me. I would guess that the type of person who orders a Rose online from Germany is probably the kind of person who could easily swap cables, or have their bike shop do it?

In the overall scheme of things, is it really helpful to have a law stating which side of the handlebar a particular brake should go to?

I got to question two, and realised you haven’t a clue what you are asking.

You are all being a bit harsh on OP. I’m taking the kinder view that this is possibly a uni or high school student, on their first project that includes data collection via a survey. Knowing how to ask meaningful questions via a survey is a skill, and not something innate.

OP – I think you should reconsider what data you are trying to extract from this survey. The “hardness” questions all have more than one level of subjectivity; as you see above, clarifying the question would give better results. The gender one in particular is problematic; without clarification of the question, the results from this will probably be meaningless. Unless there’s some seriously meta stuff going on, and you are looking at gender perceptions.

Anyway – you may want to reconsider the survey, and speak to a professor/manager/mentor depending on your specific scenario. As the survey stands you probably aren’t going to to get usable or actionable data from this survey, but good on you for giving it a go. Clarify the questions and intended data usage, take your learnings from this, and create a new and better survey. I’ll fill that one out too.

I asked a related last year, prior to my trip. Here’s the link, with as-always incredibly helpful info from Scotroutes: https://singletrackworld.com/forum/topic/bikepacking-q-ben-alder-to-corrour/

I then mostly ignored his advice. Here’s my write-up: http://bogslogblog.fortaugustus.com/index.php/2019/05/13/ben-alder-bothy-bikepacking/

Relevant section if you can’t be bothered to click the link:

Option A was the longer but less steep Bealach Dubh and Bealach Cumhahn, or Option B “just get it done” up and over the Bealach Beithe. I had heard that both were OK, although better in the reverse direction from what I was doing, so I opted to just get it done.

Big mistake – it was basically an 8km push up a well-marked but very steep stalker path, then more pushing through and endless bog, then more pushing back down a too-steep-and-wet-to-ride path to the bothy. Really – if anyone is ever thinking of duplicating this route, definitely take the Bealach Cumhahn path. Which as you’ll see in a bit, was part of my route back the next day.

Overhead power lines arcing? Not sure about here in the UK, but is a common occurance where I grew up in Texas. Lines (neighborhood power, not high voltage) brush up against a tree branch or similar in high winds, and arc and pop as you drescribe.

As a counter-balance, I find having a professional look at my CV/resume with a completely objective view is super helpful. As individuals we are often too close to our own experience to be able to communicate it well, and having someone with the expertise to assist on that can be very helpful.

If @lunge or someone with similar expertise are able to do so for you, that is of course the best bet. I had a good experience with Janet at The CV House many years ago. Wasn’t cheap but did involve an in-depth series of conversations about my background, goals, etc.

Think of it like marketing or branding – there’s a reason that marketing and branding agencies exist, who are better able to assist in targeting and exploiting a brand in the marketplace, even if the brand owner themselves in theory could do this.

That requires me buying a new machine that actually comes with this! Door is kept open when away, but will fashion some sort of U-bend, and do the occasional hot wash. Thanks!

is there any other commodity where this occurs?

This is the fallacy of your thinking. Houses are not a commodity, as each has intrinsic value beyond the land + building. Even two houses next door to each other may have wildly differing values. Architectural design vs built to scheme. Materials used. Maintenance. Etc. Then add in scarcity of land, local economic factors, school districts, etc.

Agree with sentiment tho – house prices are crazy.

I’m guess the last two replies haven’t done this much. Sometimes, especially when on your own, “just using a tape measure” isn’t convenient, although it usually isn’t that hard and will probably be the most accurate.

I was curious about this, as I’ve struggled recently mapping my road bike fit to my turbo bike.

DC Rainmaker reviewed the Bike Fast Fit app way back in 2013, and seemed to give generally good review. I note on the app store it hasn’t been updated since 2018.

    https://www.dcrainmaker.com/2013/10/automated-measurement-review.html

I’ll take one for the team and download and try it out – curious if it is a good solution. I’ll try to remember to post back here in a few days.

Burden of proof is on you unfortunately.

I’m not doubting this is accurate, but as someone who didn’t grow up in the UK I find this astounding. In (as far as I know) all states in the US, if someone rear-ends you the burden of proof is on them, to prove there were extenuating circumstances. Otherwise the assumption is the driver of the car that did the rear-ending was showing undue care/attention.

My own experience over the years is upgrade of shifters is hugely more noticeable in feel, than upgrade of the derailleurs – the latter more noticeable when hanging around at the trailhead with friends.

Having said that, and as owner of two XTR-equipped bikes – there really isn’t that much difference between XT and XTR; XT is so good anyway, I probably wouldn’t bother unless like me (I admit it!) you are shallow and like the tartiness of XTR.
