First ride of the year here – Whether or not I have defeated the man flu, I’ll be heading up the Quantocks on Sunday. Hope the winds died down a bit!

I’m in taunton, if anyone nearby has an unwanted, unloved wheel, I’m happy to collect and chuck a few quid your way – I promise it’ll go to a happy home 🙂

take the wheel off and put it on the kerb/step and push against the two highest sides until the wheel straightens, done this to great effect loads of times

Tried this – it’s too far gone, keeps popping back into it’s “new improved” shape!

Will get a pic when I get home, obviously had to ride my other bike today!

The dead tree in the bin is there to muffle the noise of the aforementioned cat which is currently serving a 6 month sentence for dangerous road crossing.

The crash was just a swerve up the kerb, managed to hop the front wheel up, back wheel got unlucky and stuck on the kerb at speed. Thought all was ok til I tried to ride away!

are there any specific things I need to look for when buying a new wheel (old skool 26″ obviously!) but are there any different types of quick release/rim width etc to look out for or are they all standard?

It’s due to the denser colder air containing more oxygen per liter, I thought everyone knew that……

Denser colder air would also offer more air resistance

I’d be impressed if you can get milk out of a yak in Nepal or Tibet… Yak is the male, the females are actually called Nak or sometimes dri.

I’ve had Nak milk tea, and porridge in Nepal twice. The first time was horrible, but not one to give up I tried it again… I was very sick (both ends) for 3 days (far from ideal when treking long distances at altitude!)

Got a 3 day trip to new york as a xmas bonus once (I was only a lowly accounts clerk at the time) – should have stuck with that company.

No bonus this year, and a xmas party at the local holiday inn… oh the joy!

Thanks for all the replies – a bit of reading to do there – looks like we should find something for a decent days riding.

Times Literary Supplement – escorted of the premises seems a little harsh

Quantocks is less than 2 hours away – a full day there will get you round the best bits (beautiful natural single track descents), but I keep finding new stuff every time I go – tougher downhill stuff there too at triscombe.

adelaide is only really interesting during the fringe festival (Feb/March time from memory) – you won’t get a room at that price whilst it’s on though!

What are you going for if you don’t mind me asking? Does it have to be Adelaide city? If you have a car then staying out in the Borossa Valley, Mcclaren Vale, Adelaide hills could be an option.

Strikes me as a bit dangerous – I don’t like the idea of anything that might stop me from getting my hands off the bar during a crash… and they look stupid. What’s wrong with a decent pair of gloves?!

frogstomp – I hear that it holds up quite well in the wet. I wouldn’t want to be up there in a torrential downpour or strong wind though as it’s quite exposed on the top of the ridge. Was up after a day or two of rain a couple of weeks ago and it was bit muddy in places but perfectly ride-able!

I actually quite like Smiths, after that I’ve tried stert, Somerton, Frogs (both sides), hodders, – I just wondered if it’s worth parking Bagborough end, anything worthwhile down that end?

Cheers jam bo – could you suggest a shortish loop for a change from my usual.

For a quick blast I normally park in holford, head up to ridge, locate bicknoller post and then head down Weacombe (trying to ignore the drop on the right now it’s been pointed out to me!), back up via Stapleplain c.p. and then down Smiths, back up again and down one of the combes that drop back into Holford.

Was thinking of maybe parking somewhere else to try some other stuff but not sure where to start really. Any suggestions?

Jambalya – I’ve (begrudgingly) converted to kindle for books but you can’t beat a real print magazine… for one it won’t fit between my legs and end up in the toilet when I drop it like my phone will 😉

Start slow and short. Golden rule is to not increase mileage by more than 10% per week. Couple of short runs in the week and maybe one longer one at weekend and build gradually – knock back the mileage one week in every 4 to help recover and stay injury free. The forums over at runnersworld.co.uk have loads of useful info. Good luck – the main hurdle once you get into it seems to be not over doing it and trying to avoid injury – a risky business is this running lark! 😉

jesus, thanks for that (I was on my own at the weekend) – I used to love weacombe until someone pointed out the hidden drop on the right that I’d never noticed!!! Any other combes you’d like to spoil 😉

Haha, think I found that one by mistake last weekend… is it the one with a lone tree at the top, starts grassy, turns a corner into a roots, more roots, then some roots increasing in size then onto a nice single track roller coaster?
