5.1's made of cheese! are you mad?

Julesg007, the best bit of advice I can give is that get the wheels built up by a reputable wheel builder, which ever set you go for. All the strength of the wheel is in the build and not in the rim, a badly built or uneven tentioned wheel will soon break / dent or buckle regardless of make / model. I have been running 5.1's on 440FR hubs with DT Revolution spokes for 3 years now, Cwm Carn DH to Skyline any anything in between. I have not had to retrue them once, I only ever send them in to my LBS for tention check every 6 months or so.
The 4.2's will be fine for Cross Mountain / Trail Centre use if built up well, just remember that tyre size will be more limited. If you go for factory built wheels get them retentioned befor any use and they should last.

    Hora,

The main thing you do need to be worried about with scratched / damaged stantions is that they will eventually carry dirt passed the seals, it does not take much to wreck a stantion too! Especially in the UK.

It's good but – I think it would be better with Will Self. Jack Dee is just not funny!

Can't see the point of it, and it's pretty damn ugly!

    Options: –

    (a) leave it and put up with a creak for the rest of the life of the bike – will probably last about 1 ride!

    (b) get it out and try to re cut the threads in the cup – Getting it out will probably be difficult enough, and will also be linked to (C) as you will probably need a new cup!

    (c) get a new BB cup

    (d) do something else – Best option i.e. Take it to your LBS as you may have damaged the threads in the BB also.

PM looks better than AM but if all else fails Penhydd was riding well last week. Haven't rode the wall for a while, last I heard though it was a bit washed out same for Whites.

Either way should be good, just take plenty of brake pads!

Ok, bit of info – There's no issue with regards U-Turn adjustment on the fly as Trailmonkey said, it is designed to allow this function. Although the adjustment can be made easier by removing 1 of the ball bearings from under the U-Turn cap. You should clean under the U-Turn adjuster anyway to keep it free and clean from dirt, most problems usually arise from crap under there or the lube being washed out by jetwash / degreaser.

The compression and damping circuits are both in the top part of the fork, it's only the adjustment of the rebound which is at the bottom of the fork. The compression and rebound are isolated from the spring rate, and as such have no influence. If you are having to adjust compression with U-Turn wound down then you may have other issues.

The lockout function or Flood Gate is basically a pressure relief valve that restricts oil flow under noraml use but allows oil flow through the compression circuit under high fork compression, if the Flood Gate is closed too much then the pressure required to open the valve sometimes overcomes the O Ring resulting in an oil leak. Operating ther U-Turn will do little damage to this as it just increases the pre compression pressure required to over come the Flood Gate. Only if the Flood Gate threshold is too high damage may occur.

In short then, yes it's ok to use U-Turn on the fly!

It is a bit pointless as an all / half day excursion unless. You'll need to do it twice in the same day and as you learn the lines it becomes a lot better. It's also top notch when you night ride it!

A really good place to eat is the Tapas Picatao in the Sant Just region of Barca, it's on the Carrer de la crue / Carrer del nord intersection north of Barcalona. Google it of you need directions.

I'm off there with the wife for 5 days tomorrow to visit friends 😀

It's also Baraca vs Man City tomorrow too (VIP Tickets waiting!).

    Have a good trip!

Have had on my heckler so far: – 5th Element (way to active on pedaling), DHX5 Air, DHX5 Coil and now a Float R. For mental stuff you will not beat the DHX5 Coil, for general riding and trail centre stuff the Float R is a fantastic lightweight option. You dont really need to go for any of the Propedal stuff other than what is built into the Float R, I went for the minimal damped shock as it was reccomended by Mojo. The DHX5 Air whilst very active and had good pedaling efficency, blew through it's travel too easy.

Marks out of 10 on the Heckler

    DHX5 Coil – 9/10
    Float R – 8/10
    5th Element – 6/10
    DHX5 Air – 5/10

    UPDATE:

Apparently the 4 bikes had been stripped and rebuilt to look different from what was stolen, the guy who was selling them claims he had nothing to do with the thefts(as usual). They have at least 2 in custody and the police are closing in on who they suspect is the main one, they are expecting there could be quite a cache. If anyone has had a bike pinched from Cwmcarn in the last 3-4 months it is well worth getting in touch with Newport / Gwent police. I know there was a recent spate of thefts, and even an attempted theft while a rider was sleeping in the car they were trying to nick the bike off!

    Hora,

That would have had little or no effect on the over shift issue, it may a little impact on changing up / down gears.

Old Sheldon will help on this, you'll probably need some alcohol to help through this ectensive guide mind!

Seeing as nothing else has been changed or altered except the mech It's got to be either the H scew setting on the mech or there's the mech tentioner at the rear which positions the top jockey wheel closer or further away to the cassette. The further away from the mech the top wheel is the higher the chain tension and the more chance of misalignment. You will need to set it so it just enough room to transfer to the top sprocket of the cassette without fouling the chain.

I'd go for a Thule towbar mount too, saves loads on MPG's compares to roof mounted.

96 Judy SL with MS Speed Spring 10/10, had them for 10 years and only serviced them 4 times, were stll as new when I sold them.

2001 Psylo were quite good considering I bough them for £30 in 2006 and they were nera enough mint condition!

2007 Lyrik U-Turns 10/10 have performed flawlessly, still of thre heckler after 2 years Afan riding. They are serviced nearly every month though.

Worst was the Quadra 5's though, nearly killed me more than once!

Sorry Mikey, I store my 2 year old Lyriks upside down regularly and they have never leaked from anywhere.

I think manufacturers deliberatley oil components as they will not be sure how long they will sit on the shelf. This protects them against moisture. If it's a small amount of oil I would'nt worry about it. Clean up the forks, store them upside down for a couple of days and then right side up and recheck.

I origionally had pikes on my Heckler and while I found them to be very good I felt that the bike had more to give. Swapped them out with Lyriks and was a different feel alltogether, probably has something to do with the better damping. The down side is that climbing is noticably more difficult, but the downhils out weigh the pain and suffering on the climbs 🙂

Stumpy, get the wife to go to car park Security in uniform if possible. She will have more pull as they will be reluctatnt to give what could be evidence to the public, I had my 1 day old A4 wing crumpled by a learner driver trying to park and had to pull in a favour from a PC friend to get a copy of the tape. As soon as I had the evidence the other party's story soon changed.

You could probably squeeze 1/2 lb out of the chainset, with full ally on the rings & upgrade to XT cranks. Weight saving on the wheels is worth double on the frame set remember, your wheelset is around 2350gms without tyres. You could get that down to 1900ish with 5.1's and Pro2's that'll get another 1lb off but worth 2.

Nope 100% sure Zangolin, just took out my Mission Control unit and checked. It's a C clip, I do agree though that the TFT pic looks like an O ring. Must a weight saving thing 😀
Either way you wont have a very positive "Click" between sewttings on the high speed circuit.

    Konastoner
    Free Member

Well that's changed then, my 07 Lyriks have the same C clip that holds the BB's in the low speed circuit just larger. You shouldn't even have an O ring there, take em straight back, These have abviously been butchered!

I think 5w40 means it reaches a 5 viscosity rating at 100 deg C using the winter grade viscosity. The 40 means the SAE standard viscosity also rated at 100 deg c. Either way you'll have to be seriously hammering the trails to acheive anything comparable to 5 weight fork oil!

I would probably go for a set of DT Swiss EX1750's at 28mm rim width and 1750g per pair I don't think many other "Off the shelf" units will beat them. And to be fair DT's reliability is second to none.

This is centered around the hubs more than rims.

My mate has both, CK's on his Orbea and Mavic CM ST's on his Trance. The ST's have been back to mavic for a new rear hub as the hub pawls completly disintergrated. Also a few spokes have popped out a couple of times on the ST's, he is a heavy rider but as you would expect the CK's are faultless.

If you can get the CK's i'd go for them.

Me, I ride DT Swiss wich have also been faultless.

My first real full susser was a coiler, awsome do anything bike but a bit overkill for most UK stuff but has the flexibility to handle most DH tracks. Here's my old Coiler 🙂

I ended up swapping the frame out for a Heckler, I find it a lot more forgiving. Natural progression I suppose.
