I don’t think anything is a foregone conclusion. It’s hard enough to reliably predict the outcome of general elections, which is pretty much the same decision that’s been made every three years for the last sixty years. Predicting the outcome of this one-off referendum will be even trickier.

e, if someone is publicly posting faked images etc to stir up hatred, and is calling for X to be killed. Then X is killed. Shouldn’t the poster bear some responsibility for that?

An incitement to violence is different from an incitement to hatred.

Being racist makes you a dick but I don’t think it should be a criminal offence. I think it’s a bad sign when the police start arresting people for what they think. I don’t think hatred should be illegal and I don’t think inciting it should be illegal.

I am glad tomorrows papers in Scotland will not be awash with jingoistic nationalist flag waving

For all the faults of the Scotch nats, it was never on the cards that iScotland would have had much interest in invading or bombing anyone (if only for financial reasons).

Are we seriously being asked to consider the significance of a single tweet from an expelled Labour Party member from Woking? Is this a test for the smallest possible measurable ISO unit of relevance? The WdT (Woking douchebag Tweet)?

But that’s the point KB. He’s not getting paid. It’s in his time.

No, I agree entirely, that’s my point. If it’s important enough to call a meeting about (and there’s some valid reason why it can’t be scheduled in normal working hours), then it’s important enough to pay the workers to attend it! If it’s not that important, you probably don’t need to have the meeting.

This is a battle we are having in our “family friendly” employer at the moment where they keep scheduling stuff at night and then offering warm white wine. I don’t want your booze, I want to be at home.

I don’t see why “out of normal working hours” necessarily has to mean “unpaid”, esp if you’re paid by the hour.

Retail price maintenance is illegal. I don’t know what retail price meddling is ;)

If you have any evidence (however scant) of retail price maintenance, you should report it to the competition and markets authority. They are quite well funded and have impressively scary powers to search and interrogate companies that are suspected of engaging in illegal activity.

And FWIW, it is price fixing, it is illegal, people do lose contracts if they don’t toe the line.

It wouldn’t be price fixing (which is anticompetitive behaviour between competitors), it would be retail price maintenance (which is anticompetitive behaviour between a supplier and its customer)…if it happened at all.

I don’t really value the intangibles of LBSs…certainly not enough to want to pay more for bikes or bits because manufacturers and retailers are breaking the law.

Good on the man, who wants to be interviewed by attention seeking people who have never created a buissness or a job for others in their lifee

This is a stupid thing to say.

I looked at the profiles of the first four listed members of the BIS Select Committee. They were an ex accountant, the ex head of a large employer, an ex venture capitalist and the ex head of an org that gets youth into employment. I think they’re reasonably well placed to examine low paid employment in retail.

Two weeks is not a long time considering the jet lag, discomfort of the trip and heightened emotional circumstances. Don’t underestimate how knackered you might be.

Breaking the trip up is a tricky one – you might just be extending the perceived travel time because you’re knackered and jet lagged in Singapore for another 24 hours.

If the law is wrong, change the law.

You’ve got to understand what the problem is (or if there is one) before you legislate to fix it, and best way to understand a problem is to speak to the people that are in the thick of it.

IIRC, technically Parliament is a court

The House of Lords was a court; and I suppose you could say parliament is a court if the h of l is; but j don’t know whether that’s all changed now we have the Supreme Court; and I’m not going to look it up

what is the most likely diagnosis?

It’s not a question of which diagnosis is most likely (ie what is the most common diagnosis among those asked to diagnose the patient), it’s a question of which is the most appropriate diagnosis. And the answer to that question is lupus, because this is real life.

I’m not sure I really care about the thrill level of a bike manufacturer…

Its appalling that a manufacture can’t decide its own prices.

A manufacturer is perfectly entitled to decide its own prices – it just can’t decide everyone else’s.

It’s not price fixing, it’s retail price maintenance (a different type of anticompetitive activity that is -also- usually illegal) … If it happened the way the OP describes, if it could be proved etc etc…

Which post 1991 slumber? They’ve had numerous cross-border wars.

The “Russia has always been part of Europe” line is empty rhetoric. Europe fired water cannons of money at Russia in 1990s and 2000s (this is how Putin got rich and influential in St Pete). It spent the fifty years before that occopying half of Europe. If it is making a claim to European values it could a) state what they are and b) live up to them.

Russia doesn’t consider itself a European country but a Eurasian one. In any case, being partly and geographically in Europe is irrelevant.

The Soviet Union, for all its evils, never aimed to destroy entire nations.

Apart from the Chechens, the Ingush, the Volga Germans… Have a look at the definition of genocide and the destruction of nations as nations.

Also, it’s just “Ukraine” not “the Ukraine”. The revolution, referenda and invasions were a consequence of rejection of trade negotiations, not NATO expansion.

Incredibly tedious and boring speech. Amazingly he manages to find time to make a dig at the gays.

I’m most offended that the man from Specialized referred to them as “40 unique bikes”. Does he not understand the meaning of unique? Tsk.

There’s nothing wrong with saying “these are 40 unique bikes”. They could each be unique. More than one thing can be unique. You just can’t have degrees of uniqueness. And for that reason I am offended by your pedantry fail.

Reminds me of the Ford adverts when they photoshoped all the black workers out of the poster and replaced them with white workers.

Tbf…iirc…that happened because Ford Poland needed an image, so they took a stock photo from the corporate photo bank, removed the nonwhites (what with there not being many nonwhite people in Poland), used it in their brochure or whatever, but then saved the altered version back into the corporate photo pool (or something), where it got reused by Ford in the UK or US. In other words, it wasn’t as simple as some bigot at Ford deciding to edit out all the people s/he didn’t like the look of.
