“Not evil, but clearly totalitarian. [:-)] “

    Utilitarian rather than totalitarian, surely?

Spongebob – I see where you are coming from, and am sorry for your horrible experiences/loss, but I genuinely don’t believe that the chances of having organs wrongly harvested are significant.

Tangentially, there has been a bump (don’t know how big) in organ donations in Greece (where donation rates were very low) after Doujon Zammit’s parents publicized organ donation. (Zammit was iirc an Australian-Greek who was murdered outside a nightclub on Mykonos). http://www.smh.com.au/national/doujons-tragedy-brings-an-amazing-outcome-20090224-8gul.html?page=-1

Piss and vinegar is the best antiseptic. (Well, it’s what I seem to use for most situations and I haven’t died yet, so…)

Did you not notice the loss of heavy industry every where else in the UK at the same time

    ???

Yes, of course. That’s why a whole bunch of people moved away/didn’t move to a whole bunch of other places in the UK when those places had high unemployment and shagged-out old industries closing down with nothing to replace them. That’s also the same reason why your comment of “if it’s so great there, why do so many of them live in other places?” would be just as dopey if it were made about Taffs, Geordies, and whatever you call Yorkshire types.

You’re getting terribly upset (“it boils my piss”) about something that doesn’t seem to affect you directly. Maybe it’s you that has the chip on your shoulder?

Bilingual road signs cause crashes? You’re right – now I understand why the roads in Belgium, Finland, Switzerland, Ireland and far NE Italy are so famously dangerous!

“Incidentally I’ve always wondered and perhaps you can answer this question murdoch, if its so **** great up there, how come there are so many of us everywhere else?”

    1) Home Counties-oriented national policy means to advance above a certain level in most industries you have to leave Scotland.

    2) Historic heavy industry orientation + Home Counties-oriented economic policy in 70s and 80s made the erse drop out of the economy.

    3) Zero tolerance policy on bitter losers asking vapid rhetorical questions, open door policy to English outdoorsy types.

“look for an annually oil-changed “

On a side note, in the US, the standard recommendation for oil changes is 3 months/3,000 miles – often on the same cars we drive here!

London Bridge has (or at least had) a workshop in the basement.

Forgot to say – On Your Bike is the competitor to Evans at London Bridge. I was in there once when an assistant told a woman with a broken spoke that “wheels can’t really be repaired” and she needed a new 130 quid one. Big wave for the LBS!!!!

” I’m just back from a nice day on a yacht on the Solent, and am now back in my well appointed flat in one of the finer parts of London, eating good food and drinking good beer.”

“I had the exact same experience asking for a stem at an Evans in London. Asked next if they knew anywhere that did sell them so the guy recommended another Evans a bus ride away. As it happens there was another larger MTB shop (with stems!) 100 yards further down the street. “

    London Bridge?

“They died because they put their lives on the line for the benefit of this country…The correctness of our being in Iraq is another issue altogether. “

Unfortunately, that second sentence conflicts with the first, and goes to the heart of the problem.

I can do it – if you throw in the postage and if you drink a beer right before you lick the envelope seal so I can remember the smell.

But the LibDems will pick up some urban Labour seats I think/hope.

“I like NYC but makes London seem quiet; not much space other than Central Park but that can get crowded.”

You’re confusing midtown/downtown Manhattan with NYC – the two are not the same.

    “Barcelona 42?? madness. “

Must be all the crime and grime.

I’m glad I don’t live in London any more – you’re all welcome to it!

Usually the employer shouts it. It’s pretty expensive, unsurprisingly. Hiscox is good for all sorts of exotic insurance.

You may also want to check that your contents policy will cover your bike there.

“Other Broadband providers seem to have almost the exact same policy, which suggests collusion or a cartel operating.”

That’s not true. An “industry standard” doesn’t necessarily suggest collusion or a cartel. It might just be the obvious and sensible rule. (Unless, of course, you think Mr Wong’s All-You-Can-Eat Chinese restaurant in Soho is colluding with Jocky McSweat’s All-You-Can-Eat Haggis House in Dingwall because they both have “no taking the piss” rules).

“The OP asked where he stood legally, that’s my opinion on that matter.”

Unfortunately, your legal opinion is completely useless (because you’re not the OP’s lawyer) and in fact wrong (I believe – but I am not his lawyer either).

Better than nothing. Also, the sister can initiate a conversation about it (THEY ALL KNOW HOW!!!) and report back to you.

    oh.

i didn’t think it would be carbon neutral, though. well, actually, hold on, if you bought wood from a managed forest, wouldn’t that be carbon neutral (+/- the amount of carbon involved in cutting/transporting it to your door)? Or am I misunderstanding carbon neutral?

I am thinking about a small woodburning stove next year too, so all this is very interesting to me right now.

Genuine question: presumably it’s more eco to burn newspaper logs than to recycle them and burn gas to heat a front room, right? (Assuming you were going to read the papers anyway and that you’d have a gas fire installed instead).

“While federal authorities took the proper steps to notify state and local authorities…New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg said he was “furious” about the incident, criticising those responsible for failing to warn the public.

    Someones telling porkies”

Actually – NYC Mayor doesn’t control airspace (that’s the feds, man) so there was no need to inform him at all. And even if the feds did tell NYC city, the fault in communicating it to Bloomie – if it even should have been communicated to him – could well be within his own organization.
