It doesn’t highlight anything. It’s just an unsubstantiated assertion about how the private sector operates.

Are we sure the statement wasn’t “1 in 4 will pay? No! More tax!”

only issue with riding (MTB) in Aus is that others have stated, it’s a portion of a day drive away to get anywhere worth riding

I don’t know what the cool kids are calling categories now but there’s OMV in Hornsby for example. Plenty of cheeky trails in kuringgai. and that’s not talking about belanglo and whatever the place next to it is called. It depends where you’re starting from in Sydney too obviously

and will be making very little use of public services including education in future is particularly fair.

Did you enjoy not being hacked to death by a band of highwaymen on the way into work today? Not being crushed by debris of falling planes? Not choking on toxic smoke? Not contracting smallpox or rubella? Reading the road signs? Having a proper phone signal? Walking along the roads? Not tripping over small children and the lame begging?

Yeah? Seems like you used a fair number of public services before you even clocked on…

It does happen. My friend was an active Democratic Party member and he told me the local Dems and Reps regularly registered on each other’s side to try and get the most loony candidate nominated. (This was for state politics – idk if he also meant it happened for presidential campaigns.)

nce in Tehran in August sitting on my desk and I’m just pondering it now. I’d like to go but the MrS isn’t too keen on me going.

Tehran would be a different kettle of fish, I think. (And my colleague is going to that same conference I suspect).

I seem to remember that UPS drivers in the USA are unionised as well, and consequently it’s seen as a reasonable job that pays a wage you can live on. (I might be wrong).

You’re overstating the meaning of “having regard to”.

The trouble is companies are avoiding minium wadges via the zero hours and “self employed” method of payment.

Exactly. Yodel only exists because it circumvents minimum wage requirements by formally using independent contractors, and pushing the cost of labour, fleet, maintenance, insurance etc onto them, in return for a tiny flat fee per drop. Yet in reality and in substance we know that those drivers are really employees: they mostly spend all day delivering whatever volume of parcels is given to them by Yodel.

No matter how hard they try, it is impossible to make a living wage from delivering parcels at 60p a drop – and everyone else subsidises those low-earning “self-employed” people through the benefits system. We are all paying to maintain Yodel’s profit margins.

Holy cow! Just read that someone shot Archduke Ferdinand in Sarajevo. this won’t have many implications for anyone else in the world but it’s be big news for us Bosnians.

I see the Yodel website is offering a lot of exciting opportunities to earn £30-50 a day delivering parcels six days a week in your own taxed, insured and fuelled car in That There London (average rent: £49/day).

does anybody go to a coffee shop to spend several hours there and drink several coffees?

    Yes. Loads of people.

I am flabbergasted to learn that “self-employed” drivers paid little to do a stressful job with no safety net are not more dedicated to their craft.

Starbucks prices aren’t lower, though. They’re a fairly expensive place to buy a fairly ordinary coffee

So if it’s not the coffee that gets people through the door of Starbucks, what is it?

Polygraphs are about as scientific as rear wheel hub motors and chiropractors…bollocks but they have their defenders.

I gave a regular user off here some hayes brakes as he (said he) needed them for his girlfriend’s bike.
He added a couple of rotors and sold them in the STW classifieds the following week.

There’s a group of three ladies at our school who drive in their >1 year old 4x4s, lift £4k road bikes off the back, drink coffee for an hour or two at the school’s coffee shop and then head off for a ride. I’ve followed them on Strava and, well, their rides are usually less than 10km at a 7km/hour

As an aside, did anyone just hear Any Questions where there were two successive questions:

    1) what would you do to improve oecd numeracy and literacy ranking? Unanimous answer: let teachers teach without interference

    2) should that headteacher have told parents to come to school properly dressed? Unanimous answer: noooo, there are more important things, she shouldn’t have…

Gaaah, well, which is it, you bastards? Either we let teachers use their latitude and initiative to do what they judge their schools and kids need, or we don’t! Very annoying.

much as I’d advocate a “buy British” approach, the government should have awarded the conversion contract to General Dynamics and snubbed BAe until they get their act together

BAE Systems isn’t even that British. They and the House of Saud were able to get Tony Blair to shut down the bribery investigation though. Does Tony Blair do any consulting for influential Saudis since he left office, I wonder?

Isn’t it all a bunch of arse because all they’re doing is rebranding the minimum wage as the living wage?

iirc the living wage was developed by unions to show the difference between the min wage and the amount you a jelly need to live on

Half of these retail banks didn’t even compete with each other in the same geographic market so their merger increased competition, not reduced it

There is no shortage of retail banks in the US. My old local town/village has its own private commercial bank! There are also zillions of credit unions.
