I’m not a roadie or racer so don’t really know much about tubs, but I’m curious, is it only sticky tape or glue holding these things on? There’s no bead, so how do these things not get ripped off when you brake hard or go around corners, I know they work but I’d be worried I’d be ripping them off the rims.

Thanks stevextc, I did wonder about trying to fix them but with the hassle of taking apart, checking seals maybe new/replacement pistons I thought better to get new. After a bit of googling I found them for about £18 each from bike-components.de so think I’ll be ordering from them!

Can’t really stretch to a complete new set at the moment, but the prices in Germany look good!

No … not a teacher, but work in a school, support staff, get paid 41 weeks but paid over 12 months, just interested in finding out what it works out to per hour and not sure if I need to add my holiday as I get a paid holiday allowance, I thought it might just be the ‘hours’ I actually work, so do I include the holiday weeks?

16 and a biege 1971 Mini Clubman with a hard saved £200. Did it up a bit before passing test, lots of spotlights, nudge bars, a pod on the dash with 4 extra dials in it, chrome trim, etc, you could open it and drive it with a flat head screwdriver. Saw one the other day, can’t believe how small they were!

Ton, been reading your threads for years, sad news. But, maybe you need to just pick more suitable routes now, take it easy, don’t give up on mountain biking completely and maybe things will improve in a year or so. We can’t do what we used to be able to do when we were 25, or even 40! I had a crash about 5 months ago and I’m still getting aches and stiffness from that, we just don’t recover as well, so I take I easy. I also know a 90 year old who was on his death bed 2 years ago, he was in tears as he couldn’t ride his bike – he loved going up a local trail to the SDW to see the view, saw him out on his bike 2 weekends ago, halfway along the bridleway talking to some walkers, I was nearly in tears, so good to see him out. Anyway, keep going Ton.

It’s funny I often think forks look a bit bent in some photos of bikes, but I think it’s because of the tapered headtube, your eye follows the line of the taper which would appear to go in a line forwards of the forks.

    Ooookaaaay, don’t get me started!

Currently a b, started as an a, but he’s just gone to a b in the last 6 months or so. All of a sudden I’m not working hard enough, taking too many breaks, on the computer too much, not around when I’m needed. Been here 4 years and no complaints from anyone, he’s been here coming up to 2 years. Said I wasn’t entitled to any breaks in my day, I have to ask permission if I want to get a cup of tea or leave the department. I rarely take breaks, I’ll get a tea and go back to work, never have my full lunch break, have to spend time on the PC to do spreadsheets, ordering, emails, cad drawings, update the budget, research stuff we need to order etc. Anyway, being micromanaged is not much fun, there’s only 4 of us in the department and I know 2 are definitely looking to leave! We’r all in the same small office, the atmosphere really changes when he’s not there, we all have a laugh.

Continuous ‘pop ups blocked’ and 4 redirects within a few minutes that keep setting my phone off, I’m off somewhere else after posting this it’s rubbish. Used to enjoy browsing around this forum when I wake up early but it’s like an alarm going off every few minutes waking the other half up and generally it’s just not great being here anymore!

I’m  getting ‘pop ups blocked’ jumping up and down the screen too. Android phone. Jeez why don’t you just knock this place on the head and use the old forum format it was much better, what the hell has been ‘improved’ on here! This used to be my go-to forum but I’m spending less and less time here … sad cos this used to be a great place for more than just talk about bikes

Another Viewranger user here, the whole of the UK in OS 50k is only about £90 and sometimes they have it on offer. I can use it on my phone and PC no problems, you can download areas when you need them and delete when you don’t, this was great when we did our around the UK trip and I’ve even used it recently in Australia, you need data to download maps but once you’ve done that it’ll work on just the GPS. Also great for finding routes local to where you are and even MBUK publish all their routes on there for free. They also have some challenges, I’m doing the 3000 mile one this year. Support has always been great too if you have a query. Tried some of the others but I really like VR, no subscription, free app and software, just pay once for maps 😀

It seems the older I get it the harder it gets to get the enthusiasm to ride in winter. Didn’t seem to bother me 10+ years ago, I’ve just come back from Australia and was riding in hot sunshine, full of enthusiasm for a ride when I got back to the UK, nope it’s peeing down and seems to have been peeing down for weeks. Sitting here with the wind howling down the chimney plastic chairs blown around the garden and rain beating against the window I just want to hibernate. Back to work tomorrow and hoping to go by bike but that can be grim if the weather stays like it is – exposed coast so full force of the weather can hit you. Roll on spring!

Ah, it’s the bundles then … just had a look at the muc-off home page and there’s small print saying excludes muc-off bundles as well as a few other things. I’m sure I saw ‘site wide’ somewhere? Anyway, can’t be bothered going through it all now.

Nope, still not working, I don’t have an ‘order summary’ just ‘update cart’ and ‘checkout’ still only giving me £9.98 discount after putting in code … I’m giving up, better things to do!

    Kojaklollipop

I’ve tried it several times, empty basket and add items and I get the same results each time £64.98 only gets discounted to £55. I’ve tried adding one bundle item at £45 and it says I don’t qualify for discount, so there are terms and conditions they’re just not putting them up what they are, they must have a minimum spend or somethings changed in the discount code?

Mmmm, I’m not getting 50% off – my basket is £64.98 and it’s only giving me £9.98 discount after adding code, am I missing something?? Is it only selected items as it doesn’t say?

Yep, Five’s and Heckler’s … Had a 2004 Heckler that became my winter full sus, bearings lasted forever (now sold) my 2011 Heckler will be the new winter bike, bearings are good on that but I got a replacement set just in case from SCUK – filled in an opline form and they were here in a few days. Single pivots are great UK bikes, sadly Heckler no longer sold 😥

Thanks. I did wonder about the impact on the head, it was on the side and felt like a bad headache at the time but soon went. Feel ok now just ache all over, right thigh feels really stiff and right thumb swelling up a bit … think I might have to suffer the bus tomorrow.

I’ll watch out for anything unusual, wife will be home later.

That was my old post mentioned on the first page. Anyway I didn’t take the job at the time, since then things at my current work seem to be going downhill and I ended up wishing I’d taken it but the wife suddenly decided she would not move! We spoke about moving there ever since I’ve known her as her parents have a place near Tavi. She said if I took the job she would not move with me, unhappy times in the kojak household at the moment. Everyone says it’s a no brainer really and what are we waiting for. It’s really made me think about taking opportunities when you get a chance, wish I’d had a bit more thinking time when offered the job in the first place, good luck to the op!

I’ve been doing the same commute on and off for roughly 10 years along a bit of wide coastal shared path, there’s 2 cyclists I see going the other way regularly and we usually give each other the nod. Just nice to know they’re still doing it as well.

But, I never know what to say if I pass a bike going the same way as me. I feel if I say ‘morning’ I’m kind of gloating that I’m passing, but if I don’t say something I feel like a miserable git*

*the wife would say this is me anyway

Well it’s not about a break in the afternoon, I might get 20mins away for lunch so always thought if I grab 10 mins at 4pm when teaching finishes it’s OK, so if I’m told I can’t have that in the afternoon I’m going to insist I get my 1 hour unpaid break for the day, I don’t mind if it’s 15 mins in the morning 30 at lunch and 15 in the afternoon or whatever, but this place will take the pee if you let it, so want to be sure of what I’m entitled to before I go to HR

I found something on that ‘non interrupt’ thing, I did a quick google this morning and the a .gov site that says if you are asked or made to return to work during your break time it doesn’t count as a break. Actually this: “It doesn’t count as a rest break if an employer says an employee should go back to work before their break is finished”. This all comes from being told I’m not allowed an afternoon break if there’s work to be done and my new-ish line manager (been here a year and a half – I’ve been here 3 years) suddenly looking into my contract and querying my working day. I’ve always just done my work and not worried about the breaks and hours, just grabbed a tea or sit down for 10mins when I can, but if it’s going to be queried I think I should make sure I get what I’m supposed to. .gov website also says you need to be away from your office or place of work when you have your break too.

Thanks all. I’ve been told 1 hour unpaid for lunch, that’s all, no other breaks, just wondered if this needed to be in my contract legally as my contract just gives working hours as 8.30am to 5.00 pm. I never get that hour or an hour during the whole day, I’m support staff in a busy school, but I might start to kick up a fuss about it.
Thanks for the tuc link tjagain will look when I get a chance.

Thanks for replies, ‘custom and practice’ I’ll look into that.

HR not involved yet but someone suggested I should speak to them as there’s other issues with the way I’m being managed at the moment. The HoD seems to be on a mission in the last few weeks to be on my case about everything.

Nothing was written down before, it was just an agreement, I’ve done it that way in a couple of places I’ve worked before and it’s always been fine. As long as I got all the work done everyone was happy.

Oh, that other job offer is looking so attractive right now!

At work we ordered an enamelling fork for our small kiln, it arrived in 2 pieces, one bag was labelled ‘fork handle’, I held it up and laughed saying ‘four candles’ nobody had a clue what I was on about!

I spent the last year or so with similar thoughts to the op. I had an old VW T2 and when I’ve gone away myself I’ve put the bike in the front seat area at night, when there’s 2 of us we’ve had to have the bikes on a rack at the back which I never liked. The thinking was to get a T5 and convert myself based on similar idea to the amdro conversion. Didn’t, in the end I got a mwb movano that had been converted by someone else and I’ve put a roof bike rack up vertical in the back similar to someone on another thread on here. It’s been fantastic, we did 2500 miles around the UK in the summer, it’s a revelation being able to stand up in the van, we can get out of bed and make tea, breakfast, use the toilet, have a shower without having to put the bed away. I think it would be possible in a swb T5 but it would require some clever thinking and always be a compromise. I was going to make a garage at the back that could fold down when not in use, lwb would ultimately make more sense. The movano’s a lot bigger than a T5 but no problem driving or parking, although I have a drive to put it in at home, I’m using it as a daily drive at the moment too.

Yep, carbon Santa Cruz 5010 for my 50th, been a while since I’d got a new bike as I usually get second hand, nice to treat myself for making it to a half century. Probably be the last bike I’ll buy until I need/have to buy an e-bike. Although I find myself fat-curious at the mo, wouldn’t mind a go on one but not sure if the South Downs is real fat bike territory.

    Thanks for all he responses.

Little more info. I’m support staff, so not the same pressure as teaching so when my day finishes I’m off. Reason for applying for the job is that we know the area a little bit and I’ve always said if a job comes up there I’d apply. One came up so I applied as you never know unless you go and see the place, meet the people, see where you’d be working. We also liked the idea of releasing a bit of ££s from current property, paying off (small) mortgage etc. moving to somewhere else, new things to do and see etc. The department I’m in now has a lot of up to date equipment that I get to play around with, cnc lathe, milling, routing machines, 3D printer, laser cutter. The new place doesn’t have these, it’s more traditional hands on stuff which is great but I think I’d miss utilising those skills. They were interested in ideas I had and projects we’ve done and I’ve got more skills and experience than they need really.

The wife has mixed feelings. Was excited at first, like myself, but then realised what we’ve got at the moment is good. Easy links to Brighton, London, friends, family, SDW on my door step. We live in a nice quiet area that we know very well near the coast. Thinking more about it maybe it’s just not the right time, maybe something like that in 5 years time. I think it was worth going to the interview, but it doesn’t seem right at the moment.

It’s been good reading the comments here and just thinking about it and typing stuff has helped so ,again, thanks all. 😀

An hour for 12 miles? Cycle to work you lunatic.

At the moment I drive half way and cycle half way, if I cycle all the way or get the bus or even drive and find somewhere to park it all takes an hour.

Accept the offer, you have at least 6 months to actually make the decision.

I’m wondering if you do something like that and change your mind in 6 months if there’s any implications? They said they would employ someone short term until September.

I don’t think I would hate the new job, maybe just not feel as satisfied, it might be a bit boring.

Location now south coast near SDW, move to Devon near Dartmoor

    Thanks for the replies

You can add a filter and force emails with a particular word or from a particular sender to go to a specific folder or the in box

There are settings on how robust you want your junk mail filter to be. Check it isn’t set to “anyone not in my contacts” or add the addresses to your contact list.

If I’m honest I’m not sure how to do any of that, but I’ll have a look later and hopefully I’ll sort something out otherwise I might be back on here asking how to do it.

Morocco, I’ve been twice around Xmas new year time and the riding’s fantastic. One year I remember looking for shade at a stop point as it was a bit hot. They were organised mtb holidays, but worth it as all I had to do was ride my bike … Might go again soon, although this Xmas I’ll be in Australia 😀

Yep, the SDW is good, easy to follow but I’d check which way the wind is going first then get a train east or west so you’ve got a tail wind back to Brighton, it’s quite open up on the downs and slogging against a wind for 3 or 4 hours gets on ya t!ts after a while 😀 or if there’s no wind choice is yours.

Mmm, little bit mixed, just had a quick look at some of the replies – days holiday, forgot to mention I work in a school so no chance of taking a day off as I get the school holidays, so choice would be sickie or truth.

I’m the only one in my department that does what I do so nobody needs to cover my job, the others will get through without me for a day 😀

You might be better off just paying it.
I’ve just gone through an appeal with POPLA and it was rejected so I had to pay up the higher amount. I looked at the MSE info and used a good copy letter and changed it to meet my needs, I argued that the shop wasn’t even open for business when I was in the parking area – early Sunday morning, and that the amount was unjustified as there was no loss to the business (ASDA) but they still rejected it. What does it say about the terms and conditions of parking where you parked, is there any signs?

Same – I don’t mind what the tv or radio is on when I first put it on, I don’t check, but if I have to turn it up or down it has to be an even number.

Also, when I hang my washing out – it’s one of those twurly pole line things, all my socks and pants have to be on one side. The wife just puts it all out randomly … madness!

Blimey! Take care out there. There’s a few fast steep bits my way, long concrete road just after Kingston where it’s easy to get speed up and then just after Mill Hill there’s a steep finish to a short steep hill that ends at a gate so you’ll have to stop on the slope or end up in the gate. Good luck.

A-ha! same happened to me, but in my defence I got to the car park early on a Sunday morning before the ASDA opened, went and did something else until the shop opened at 11am and still got done for being in there over 3 hours. I tried appealing on the grounds of the signs saying ‘parking while shopping’ and that I couldn’t shop as it didn’t open until 11am and that it didn’t financially effect them (ASDA) as nobody else could shop there at the time – the company ‘parking eye’ said I still have to pay the fine! So going to go to the independent appeals service POPLA.
