Topeak Hexus 16 everything you (I) need, tyre levers, chain tool, – and + screwdrivers, lots of allen keys including 8mm, spoke nipple wotsits and rotor bolt star/splined thingy … even a thing for letting air out of schrader valve – I've just looked cos I'm bored 🙂

Dogtown and Z-Boys … nobody I mention it to has ever heard of it but a few might know it on here? More of a documentry really about a gang of skateboarders that '… virtually revolutionised skateboarding with an aggresive style' back in the 70's, some great 'old-skool' footage and interviews.

I'm 5'11" with 32" leg and ended up with a large, it is a long bike but the saddle to bars seems short and I found on the medium my knees a bit close to the bars on tight turns, oddly the saddle to bars on the large Pitch is the same as my medium Heckler but the wheelbase of the Pitch about 4" longer, still a great handling bike though … but of course, test one first!

There's been quite a bit of discussion on here recently about the MD80 D001 Muvi type cameras here http://www.singletrackworld.com/forum/topic/mini-dv-camera-thoughts-question I got one myself as I was curious and it's great value for the money, but some seem hit and miss with battery power and footage quality, I've got some short test videos here http://www.vimeo.com/8336181 but if you look at the Morocco videos I've put up there too they were done with the POV1.5 but some of the quality has been lost in reducing the file sizes for upload (yeah, looks a bit slow but hire bikes with slipping gears/chain, worn brakes and crap forks … that's my excuse … it seemed fast at the time!), there's loads of cams to choose from, I think they all have good and bad points, I like the POV1.5 but it's expensive but runs on AA batteries which you can get anywhere or recharge, uses normal size sd card and it's a small, less weight, camera on your helmet, but it's a bit of a pain dealing with the cable and turning the recording unit on and off (I keep it in my camelbak) but I've had invalid clips a few times so it's not foolproof. The self contained type cams look good but add a bit of weight on your helmet … and why the hell gopro don't design their cams NOT to look like a brick strapped to your helmet I'll never know? 😆

Anyway, lots of choice at places like http://www.dogcamsport.co.uk/ give them a call very helpful and great service 🙂

Yeah, the footpath along the road from Telscombe to Rottingdean, then the other side of Rottingdean to Brighton is a shared foot and cycle route, they have signs up.

There is a route that goes up the back of Newhaven from the marina – Gibbon Road maybe? – that goes through the mobile home site (not the posh one, the other one) then you can get on the main road – wouldn't bother with the 'official' route that takes the back roads or Peacehaven or the undercliff bit between Newhaven and Telscombe as it's never cleaned and is full of flints, got a few punctures there in the past, then you can get on the shared path that goes from Telscombe near the 2 elephants thai restaurant (think that's what it's called?) but then I drop down onto the undercliff at saltdean and that will take you all the way into Brighton or sometimes if the weather's rough you can come back up onto the shared path just after Rottingdean and that will also take you all the way into Brighton, the bit between Saltdean and Rottingdean kind of crosses from one side of the road to the other on the 'official' route and can be a bit dicey or you can share the bus lane with buses and taxis but there's not much room along that bit.

I was flicking through a Singletrack mag last night, October 2009, cos I couldn't find anything interesting on telly, and came across a 15mm compatible wheels grouptest, they had the Tech 2 XC Switch in the review and gave them a 'singeltrack recommended' stamp – 'For the money they can't be faulted …' although a different rim to the Enduros you're looking at they seemed to rate them.

Mmm, checked the info that came with my friends Muvi and it does state that it records up to 30fps, but we can't get more than 19fps and that's using a class 4 card ?? … My cheapo version records at 30fps regardless of memory card. The Muvi is definately a nicer product feling more solid, metal case and sliding on/off buttons but the footage does not seem as good, odd, you'd think it would record footage better costing more and with obvious superior manufacturing?

Check the fittings on the helmet mount thing, the screws and nuts and bolts weren't that tight, but every bit of footage I've seen with the cheaper cams has been a bit jumpy, think you have to pay out a lot more £'s for better equipment?

Don't think you'll get more than 19fps, that's set by the cam and not the memory card, my friends Muvi only does 19fps and I can't see any difference to my cheapo copy cam that does 30fps, the only difference seems to be in the colours, as above?? I think the cheapo is better!

Simon – where are you mounting it for filming? Wouldn't bother on the handlebars – helmet, seatpost or mid-frame somewhere gets much better results, seems to be the more solid the mounting the better the footage too. I got a 4gb class 4 card from 7 day shop too and it's fine.

Had an older 1.9 diesel which was good, only problem was a raditor hose that sort of disolved, so later I got a newer one 99 or 00, most unreliable car I've ever owned, dangerous, sudden loss of power here there and everywhere, cost a fortune trying to sort it out and it was a known issue, lots of complaints on the net …. never again, px'd it for a jap car as soon as I could!

    Good job …

Years ago, the old XT hubs used to have grease ports in the bearing seals/covers, shame they don't still do something like that so you don't have to dismantle them to grease them.

I did something similar in the early 90's and drilled a small hole in the middle of the hub and used a wide zip tie to cover it and slide it out the way to put grease in.

Yep 5.10's great shoes, I use the Impact High as I like the extra support, been using them in the snow and they kept my feet warm and dry, can't say I've noticed the flex and thought them to be as stiff as my salomon type walking shoes that I used before, I've done 50 miles xc type rides in them fine but I used to find that the stiffer SPD shoes seemed to cause my feet more aches and pains than flats, skate shoes i tried did seem too thin and flexy though … I'd buy the 5.10's again, worth the initial cost IMO.

Just a quick note, but a friend decided to order the Muvi camera from Tesco Direct but he wasn't very impressed with the footage, so I said lets do a comparason and filmed a short clip in my garden using my cheapo cam and his Muvi at exactly the same time, results in this pic:

the Muvi seems to be over saturating the colours and the snow is blue whereas my D001 camera seems to reproduce the colours a bit better – what do you think?

Anyway, we sent this image to Veho who said 'Unfortunately it looks there is a fault with the colour saturation. We recommend returning the item to your reseller for an exchange or refund.'

So, spending more money on the 'proper' stuff doesn't always work out? Would be interested to know if other Muvi owners get the same results, is this normal for the Muvi as my friend is unsure whether or not to get an exchange or refund? Any thoughts?

I got myself some of the Michelin XC AT's for a trip abroad simply cos they folded to put in my luggage easy and were cheap, and they were a brilliant tyre, used in mud, sand, rock, gravel, rivers no problems, climbed and descended great and good rolling on tarmac – just like the name All Terrain! So good I decided to order more.

    AAAAAARRRGGGGHHHH that didn't work!!

And now I've noticed that any videos that I am outputting are being squashed horizontally WHY!!!??? Although my original footage is 720×480 and I set the output footage to 720×480 NTSC and the file says it's 720×480 on the screen it's being played more like 600×480, it's squashing an inch or so off the sides WHY WHY WHY!!

AAARRGGGHH I've been here 2 days trying to sort this video, frickin rubbish program might just as well use bleedin movie maker!!!

I'm just trying output in: Share > PC > Adobe Flash Player – as you can adjust the frame size in this but it's going to take 30 mins before I can see if that's any good??

Yeah, it comes with youtube settings but this automatically opens a link to youtube to load it up there, which I don't want to do – you can't save it to your pc or anywhere else (unless someone knows different please tell me how?), I use vimeo and I want to load up to somewhere else too? 😕

    Ok ..

Autostitch, that sounds like what I had before so downloaded that but the stiched image opens with Adobe Album and I can't save or change the file name so if I do 2 panoramas the second one has the same file name so won't save? How do I change my default imageviewer?

Downloded the Windows Photo Gallery but can't see how you stitch photos together on that, wheres the command?

My memory card took about 9 days to arrive from 7dayshop, but their address is in Guernsey so I guess it also gets sent from there so probably explains why it takes a while?

I'm wondering if I can attach the cam to my dog somehow? 🙂

You might find you've reached your spending limits and you need to lift them by doing more verifications – happened to me once, went to pay for something I needed urgently for my car and 'they' sent an e-cheque, I did contact the company I was buying from who cancelled that payment and I paid over the phone. You need to log in to your paypal account and you can view your limits somewhere?

    Some rear action!!

Just done another video here clicky clicky

Thought I'd have a go mounting it on the rear swingarm to see how well it would do. Using a new class4 card as well, thought it did ok considering some of the footage was taken at nearly 4 p.m.

neillp – is the card in the right way round?

My blue light flashes when charging, only noticed that today as I thought I'd test how long the battery lasts and just left it on record until it ran out, got just under 90 mins, seems to charge up quite quick as well?

Dave E – I wouldn't mount on the bars, being right above the forks it's gets lots of knocks and movement and the footage will be very jumpy, helmet or seatpost would be better, I found the helmet mount to be good, had to tighten up some of the little nuts and bolts on it though as they were a bit loose.

Stoner – that one stumped me for a while, copy and paste the TAG.TXT file to the sd card – where it comes up with the DCIM folder, change the date to current date and time, save it, unplug the camera, turn it off and connect it again to power it up and set the date and time, the TAG.TXT file then dissappears – this worked for mine.

Nick – I get just over an hour on the 2gb card, no idea what class it is it came with the camera and has no markings on it.

davy-g – footage looks good, is that the raw footage or what did you use to compress it, first time I've put up something on vimeo and I used windows movie maker which only seems to save as wmv, how did you save yours as mpeg4?

My original footage is better and clearer but had to compress it to upload on vimeo. Here's a screen shot to compare the 2, there's more detail on original, might not be able to see it on the image but it's a bit sharper and clearer to the right?

For 15 growlers, you cant really go wrong can you?

Oh yeah, I agree, think it's way better than the stuff I've seen from the ATCK(?) cams, good colours and seems to change fast for different light conditions, money well spent! I got nearly 20 mins of footage today but mostly pointing at the ground must try to set it up better – you can plug it in the pc via usb and it'll show up on a small screen what you see with it, er like a webcam I guess?

I've done a short video with mine here edited a small bit at the end of my ride today, about 2 mins long, left the sound on there, helmet mounted, using a 2gb card that came with it … I know, needs pointing up a bit, looks like you get the usual bit of wobbly footage as with most of these cheaper cams but still good for the ££'s ?

Stripe – both taken in East Sussex on the South Downs, between Seaford and Bo Peep, about 1.30pm today.

Got mine today after reading the previous threads and I can't resist a gadget, although I did order from UK supplier as I was thinking if it's any good I'll take it on a trip after xmas.

Anyway, it's the cheaper one, not the one with the sliding on/off buttons but the rubberized push buttons, I think it's the D001 ?

Came with a 2gb card, helmet mount included which is a doddle to fit plus others, UK plug, instructions on the disc are a bit gobbledegook, the LED lights aren't too bright. No indication of whether it's charging/fully charged.

But, impressed so far, files are showing up as 720×480 30frames/second, was a bit concerned the battery might not be any good but it's done just over an hour and stopped because the card is full but it still had power, got a 4gb class 4 card on the way so will be interested to see how long it records for with that? Video quality and sound was very good, as good as other cams I've seen apart from bullet/POV type cameras. I can see this being a lot of fun, easily mounted on seat tube or forks or rear swing arms it's so small, but think it will need a bit of extra security like zip ties just to make sure.

Anyone got one of these from the sellers in China/HK or UK, any good? Noticed that in some of the images of the item some look like they have a metal case (shiney) and others look like dull plastic in the same listing, and some images have what looks like a remote control unit … so what arrived in your package?

Ah, yeah, didn't think about the pins on the overshoes 😕 do all overshoes cover the sole or is there anything that covers the top part … although I'm wondering how they would stay on, mmmm?

The rear wheel at full compression comes pretty close to the seat-tube on a prophet

wouldn't say that's a problem, sounds like the op wants to keep muck off his back so, if you look at the pick of the prophet, the guard could only need to cover from the one o'clock position back to 10 o'clock, so from the one o'clock position you could fabricate an inverted U shape to go down to the stays and that would clear the seattube?

    Kojaklollipop
    Free Member

The crud fast fender looks a bit short, might keep a bit of muck off your seatpost and front mech but not your back?

I'm sure a while ago someone mentioned using a 29er rear mudguard, a full wrap-around mtb-width one, to make/bodge a decent rear off-road mud guard, might be worth looking at one of those to see if you can fettle it to fit??

I think the problem is that there are too many different rear suspension designs to come up with a universal fit rear swingarm fitting mudguard. Your prophet has large square section type chainstays whereas that santa cruz has a round chainstay/seatstay swingarm, and then what about 4 bar type rear suspension, FSR etc, that short mud guard thing was for specialized bikes from, I think, 2002 to 2007, and they've changed the design now so that might not fit. some swingarms have a brace between the stays – so you could fit something there, but then some don't and are open. Too many variables, you could design one for specialized, one for santa cruz, one for cannondale, but then they go and discontinue or change the design next year making it obsolete.

Best to bodge your own on there, the older (first?) rear crud guard, if you can get one, could be useful as it had rear struts to attach to rear dropouts and you could fabricate something to go around the rear part of the swingarm and ziptie the front? I've got one of these but the rubbers have perished so I'm going to knock up some new struts and bodge it to my old heckler.
