Kitzbuhel, Austria?

Fantastic town, huge lake 5 minutes cycle away with a beach and childrens play area. All the ski lifts are gondolas too, meaning its easier for non bikers and less sure footed people to get up (and down) the mountains.

(o, and the singletrack is ace too!)

Car brake cleaner is no good – it leaves a residue on the discs which gets burnt off at car temperatures but not at bike temperatures. I use IPA

Rob – Yea just riding on Sunday as I've got a graduation ball on Saturday afternoon/night. Depending on hangover state I will be either looking for one fast lap or a good overall finish, we'll see. Trevor may well do both though; you should persuade him anyway!

Well we were in a mixed team, and our Girl was a bit of a beginner; after her first lap she decided that riding the dark was too scary, and promptly fell asleep until 4:30am, at which point she woke up and wanted to do a lap! so we lost our lead and I didn't get a final lap!

I'll be doing the 6 hour race on Sunday, looking forward to it if the weather holds up!

Hi nick, yea I put the first one down, unfortunately I didn't have mud tires on! The course sped up so much in the morning too, shame our team tactics meant I didn't get to go for a belter at the end. Are the mule bar guys doing mayhem? I'm looking for a team as mine as pulled out; email me if you know of anything!

Yea a great event, I think the weather added to the whole thing, but then I was in a team of 4! The 'short' format is much better in my opinion; for 12 hour races it isn't so critical but 24 hour races it makes a difference.

Robdean – Was nice to meet you and an awesome ride; I don't know how you did it on those tires, my crossmarks were barely holding up for the first few laps! I was pitting for Trev – better watch out for Mayhem, he's got some motivation now! Oh, and I did get the fastest lap in the end, although there wasn't too much competition!

Yea was a really good event, and I think everyone rallied despite the weather. I was in a mixed team and we kept going all night; there seemed to be plenty of people on the course right through til morning, and looking at the results suggests there weren't many drop outs. I got fastest lap which I was pretty happy about, but can imagine it would have been a good 4-5 minutes faster in the dry.
I'll be looking forward to doing it again next year.

I did a bit of a test: 21 lb scott scale and a 28lb commencal meta 55. Normally have 2.1 crossmarks on the scott and 2.35 highrollers on the commencal. swapping them over made the weight difference 5 lbs instead of 7 lbs, but the commencal was much faster (in a scientific and quantitative test of course*) than the scott with the tires swapped.
couldnt categorically say that rolling resistance is more important than 5 lbs in weight, but it was interesting.

*Felt faster to me anyway!

well, actually, heroin is probably more benign than smoking, apart from the exigencies imposed by making it illegal!

I think you need to look into the medium and long term damage done by heroin before you start believing that statement…

Thanks for the responses everyone; I think I may go down this route and buy the full chainset. It just seems a bit silly that you cant buy them individually.

Well I've just rang up Real cycles and the guy on the other end was friendly and helpful, so I've put in an order for a Super 4 frame. Will update here once I've got it

Thanks mundiesmeister, but I'm looking for an XC-style bike rather than a short travel trail bike, hence why it'd be a super 4 rather than a meta 4x.

but has anyone used Realcycles before? never really heard anything (good or bad) about them.

Oh and my town – BATH – I'll leave anyone who knows the place to guess which shops……

Yea, I'm in Bath too and I think the shops are dire. With all the bike industry people around I don't understand why I always get treated like a retard! Even if I new nothing of bikes I would feel patronised by their attitude

I've had a Standard Fox Float R rear shock stop working due to heat build up after about 2200m of downhill. It was on a guests own bike, so when we got back to Kitzbuhel I gave it a simple aircan service, cleaned out about 2 spoonfuls of grime and it was fine for the rest of the week.

I don't think its really a problem; I guided all of last year with the same Fox rp2 and I never lost performance. The shock will heat up, but thats to be expected.

But like said in the comments already, it looked like he had about 20 bar in that rear shock! Great riding though; would love to head back to Lago di Garda

Complain to Virgin. I absolutely hate using their trains for exactly that reason.
It may be childish, but I have sent a letter of complaint every time I'ver used their trains in the last 6 months – just printed out a template and mailed it. They need to know how stupid the situation is, and how rude their staff can be.

Whats the mountainbiking like in Vietnam? Is it safe enough to head into the rural areas alone on just a bike? Have been dreaming of riding through vietnam, but would want to do it off road rather than on…

I think Chicago is about 15 hours from Both Colorado and New York state, and the mountains are much bigger in Colorado!

Kitz, are you in the US?

Not currently, But lived in Colorado for the last 18 months and moving back permanently to Boulder in July. I've explored a hell of a load of trails in that time so have a fair idea of what's good and what's not.

I would recommend Denver – winter park – sol vista – steamboat – Fruita – Breckenridge

Any more and you wont fit it into two weeks! If you have any specific questions or want trail info then give me an email 🙂

If you decide to go to steamboat (which is lovely, but never been there in the summer) I would recommend staying with these people. They're a lovely couple and the house in fantastic, right in the middle of steamboat.

where are you flying into?

its not steep stuff, its technical. You'll need something you're happy to pedal. Nowhere in Moab or Fruita really requires anything more than 5 inches of travel, and slickrock is a lot better on an XC bike than a trail bike; the trail is so smooth that suspension isnt needed, and some of the climbs are amazingly steep!

Boulder isn't a ski resort, so I wouldn't put it on your list of places to ride.

other ones that havent been mentioned are Sol Vista (US mountain bike champs are there this year again) which is just down the road from winter park.

Vail doesnt let you take mountain bikes on the Gondola, so avoid unless you want to pedal

If you're heading to Aspen, I would go to Snowmass instead; quieter, cheaper and the trails are beyond imagination

Crested Butte rocks. go there.

Angel Fire, New Mexico is worth a trip if you're in Southern Colorado, and the Boundary trail which runs from Durango to Angel Fire is amazing.

Hope it helps!

any more info, let me know!!

One word of advice – make sure you're connected to the internet when you copy CD's over. It should just bring up all the song names/info automatically and save a whole load of typing. Also, then it normally assigns a 'Genre' to each song, and that makes playlist compiling a lot easier as you can simply select all the songs in the 'Acoustic' genre or whatever.

The main benefit is that Hope can charge you more money for them. Do you regularly ride hour long downhills? if not, then you're probably not going to see much performance gain

why dont you ring Planet X and see if they can build you something for £600, and then just change parts out of your own pocket until its the spec you want. Probably still work out a fair whack cheaper

All I know about them is that Mitch Ropelato rides one, and after seeing him ride I'm sure he's going to make it to the big time.
As for the bikes, I'd buy one on function, but not too keen on their graphics or looks
