And of course the Manfrotto BeFree tripod you recommended.

:D How are you getting on with it? I’ve had mine a couple of years now and it’s been terrific (although still need a ‘proper’ heavy duty one).

Wow Kit – that’s the kind of shot that makes a year’s worth of shooting worthwhile. Nice job!

Thanks Greg! Truth be told, it’s a bit of a cheat ;) Burst mode on the A7II but I didn’t get the whole castle in shot (hand held), so I stitched it with a shot I’d taken earlier. You don’t see it though, because PS is frikkin’ clever ;)

I like that eddiebaby. 10, or even 16 stop ND?

what does it need to say

It’s not what it says that’s important, it’s what it communicates. ;)

It only needs to say “Kit Carruthers Photography”, but I’ve got in mind a logo made from a family crest. Or something like Brant suggests.

There is distortion from the heat of the engines, and I think that adds to the raggedness of the plane outline.

    Anyway, I like it regardless.

Thanks Greg, clearly I shoot very different portraits to you (i.e. they’re organised and staged), but really enjoying it.

I couldn’t tell you if it’s gemnuine or fake, I suspect it’s the latter.

Why do you suspect that? I know landscape photographers who, with long lenses (500-600mm range) go out to capture images like that. Many many failures, but the successes are spectacular. You should give the guy some credit!

Back to landscapes, this is home, and a heavily processed image! This was one of those “I’ll adjust all the sliders to max, ah that’s better, no wait let’s dial that right back again…much better” kinds of processing :D

It’s interesting isnt’t it, that Andy’s work is considerably better than the material in that link above!

Depends what you like, doesn’t it?

Sean wanted a Depeche Mode/U2/Anton Corbijn feel for his shoot. Great to have to plan something out a little better than usual!

dgb1, thank you sir! I was sad to see the HJ go, but it was too small for me (17.5″). The Yeti is grand, but I don’t ride it enough!

    bob_summers, love your photos :)

Proud of this one because I got myself out the of flat whilst feeling pretty sorry for myself, trekked into town, then promptly got absolutely soaked by biblical rain while trying to protect the gear under a tiny brolly. All good fun, and bagged the shot I was after (kinda).

clodhopper I recently bought the Samyang 85mm f/1.4. On my A7II it’s a fully manual lens, but the Nikon version has electronic aperture control and therefore TTL functionality. It’s £250. I like mine :)

But I cannot abide it if the debate is based on what someone else thinks you should be doing.

Neither can I. I think he thought he was trying to be helpful, and when I pushed back I think he lost objectivity. Having now seen his bread and butter work, I can see where he’s coming from. But, IMO, his photos are **** dull ;)

    Anyway, quite happy with this.

Greg, last night I got into a heated discussion with a portrait tog who insisted I shot at f/4 or f/8 for sharp portraits. His argument being that I’d never get a sharp result through the head at f/1.4. I said that this wasn’t the style I wanted (like your photos, sharp eyes, immediate fall off) and he just couldn’t get his head around it! Nice discussion of your style on your Flickr page; I’ll never realise that level of insight into portraits or people :)

Thanks Greg! The lens is a 14mm f/2.8 Samyang. It’s got tons of distortion until you apply a profile in LR, and then I manually did some more corrections. The image, though, is largely unchaged from the original. I managed to nail it in the capture. Here’s the original with no processing other than applying the lens profile.

    P.S. Got a 55/1.8 on the way :)

Hmmm, waterfalls….I haven’t done one for a while, but love the long exposure effect.

It’s had great reviews, and glad you’re putting it through it’s paces. My option is a little more affordable; just bought myself the Samyang 85/1.4. Not really my usual type of lens, but looking to play around with portraits a bit more and £230 is a bit easier to stomach ;)

In your shoes I’d be putting more effort into that interview than your PhD viva.

Not hard, I didn’t put much effort into prepping for my Viva ;) But no shit anyway, it’s going to be a tough job to get.
