tlr gets a thumbs up from me too :)

So, not within the last month, but very definitely proud of this (and the accompanying photos from the rest of the day). I got into portrait and event photography to prepare myself for the almighty task of photographing a friends’ wedding. I swore I’d never do one, but I did, and I survived, and I shot some half-decent stuff. And I genuinely don’t care if no one other than the bride and groom like them, just proud of myself, both for the journey to that stage and being able to execute everything I’d learned in the previous 9 months.

A small selection of the other photos on my website: http://kitcarruthersphotography.com/huw-caths-portobello-wedding/

I’ve eBay’d four cameras and various low value lenses without any problems. I think you lose around 13% total from eBay and PayPal fees (around 10% eBay, 2.9% + 25p for PayPal), and I shipped through Royal Mail, signed for and insured. So long as you’re up front (and accurate) with the shipping costs then you won’t lose out. Like Greg, much of my gear went to Europe. I actually made money on my Sony A7 since I had got it for a song 2nd hand :D

I’ve bought 2nd hand gear from Ffordes, but the quote they gave me for some stuff was laughably low. Same with MPB.

Facebook is fine, but you’re more likely to get savvier buyers from a smaller pool than eBay and as such you won’t sell for as good a price. But then you avoid fees… Pays yer money, etc.

I’m one of around 7 or 8 geology PhD graduates from a prestigious university this year and none of us can get jobs (or at least nothing longer than a month). The rest are holding out for something, but I’m doing photography instead and eventually land management.

I was formerly a geotech engineer-cum-environmental consultant. I hated it!

But I’m a firm believer in doing things you enjoy, regardless of the outcome, and things might be different by the time you finish in terms of a thriving market for graduate geologists.

    SNP in haven’t-thought-it-through-properly shocker.

I live about 5 miles from the Border. Since the SNP and Greens are determined to take my land from me eventually, maybe I should get back into cross border raiding and smuggling, just like my ancestors did, in order to keep my pockets lined with silver (or whatever).

Thanks Greg! I found I was having the same problems as I see in your studio portrait i.e. light bleed from the overexposed white background. I ended up much preferring to use a dark background, as I could more easily control the light.

There’s a fair bit of post gone into the images, with the exception of Natalie’s headshot above. Studio lights show up every imperfection so lots of cloning out spots and the like. The studio I was in also had a rough white painted stone backdrop which I ended up editing to a plain white background in some of the images. More post work than I enjoy, but it can be very satisfying!

I’ve had a couple of goes in a studio now. It is much harder than YouTube makes it look! Plus the kit is always something different and you’ve go to figure it all out.

That said, I really enjoyed it. You can be as creative as you like with light, if you have the time to mess around.

Realised that hadn’t really uploaded many (any!) photos from the last studio shoot, but rectified that now. I won’t post them all here, but this is the album of studio photos on Flickr (one photo in the album is probably NSFW) https://www.flickr.com/photos/gingerfox/albums/72157671952111494

Nintendo lost their way after the SNES hoping their own games would continue to keep them going, it didn’t. Seems to be Japanese school kids and those holding onto Mario that keeps them going.

5 of the top 10 selling consoles of all time are Nintendo, 3 (or 4) of them released after the SNES. The Wii outsold the 360 and PS3. Either that’s a shitload of Japanese schoolkids and Mario lovers, or you’re talking shite ;)

OP, as someone who’s trying to set up their own photography business, I would never adopt the model of your photographer. Mine would be/is: 1-2hrs at £40-60, and I’ll deliver around 4-8 full-res digital images to you. If you want them printed, that can be arranged for additional (£10 a pop). Something like that anyway.

And if you want to see what an amateur can do with a DSLR and Lightroom, try me at: http://kitcarruthersphotography.com/

Vegetarian? You’re ****. Just give it up for a month. Seriously. Or else be prepared to source and cook basically all your own food.

You can find veg tempura in plenty of places, from what I remember, plus you get rice everywhere. Tofu/bean curd is pretty common too, although if you’re being strict then watch out for the sauces. There appears to be plenty of info online about eating veggie in Japan, so no, you’re not ****.

Your rail pass should get you on any JR (Japan Rail) run transport, which includes ferries. We used ours to get over to Miyajima (great place). And while there is an underground in Tokyo which your pass won’t work on, I found that I only needed to use it once in 4 days there since the overground JR trains got me pretty much everywhere I needed to. I used an app called Japan Trains. It was free and by the sounds of it did all the things that Hyperdia does – incredibly useful!

I took a prepaid credit card and could only get cash from the 7/11 machines. I did use my card to pay for things a few times, but yeah, mostly used cash. And lots of it; it’s an expensive place!

It’s a brilliant place, would love to go back :)

Scrolling vertically to make the images move horizontally is counter intuitive for me

You can use the direction arrows on the keyboard, I think…

jambalaya – looking for portrait and events work, eventually. Needed something to start off with but will refine it with time. It’s mostly a vehicle to punt landscape prints to begin with, once I’ve got the shop set up. No idea who it’s aimed at, at the mo…er…everyone? Not a great answer, I know, but I’ll work it out soon enough when I do my business plan!

Lumberjacking didn’t work out for you eh?

I’m working on that site too. Think suspenders… ;)

leffeboy thanks for the feedback, I’ll definitely implement a load of those. Appreciate it :) And drop me an email, would you? Might be able to sort you a print of that Leith photo if you’re interested.

Try using the proper setup/config pages on the router and extender, rather than WPS.

I shouldn’t have mentioned the WPS button… Yes, that’s exactly what I want to do, but didn’t know if there was something specific to be looking for to set up.

I’m unemployed so £50 for some extra convenience (like having internet in the upstairs bathroom) can probably wait :/

    :D

Have you tried it setting it up via the belkin.setup / belkin.range options rather than the WPS button?

Yes. That’s where I got the message from.

Those BT extenders are fine for devices with an ethernet port, but not for phones (which is what I need it for), as far as I can tell.

I believe that high heels, suspendies and a bra are the correct attire.

Just like my dear paw paw?

Actually in kevlar reinforced boots and trousers. Not as glamorous, but just as hard to walk about in to begin with ;)

Edit: I’ll swap some poor chainsawing skills for a logo for my photography business :D
