I’m still here desperatebicycle and reading the thread with great interest, your contribution is appreciated. I don’t have much more to say on the subject at present but glad the conversation is being had – as interesting as DIY, car/van, music, PSA etc threads can be.

Currently sitting on Ikea chairs. The nearest store is an hour away and don’t have the time. New chair has to be a permanent feature unless it’s small enough to be easily stored away. Will explore the stool options. Thank you all!

I can’t quite believe Google will trade in my partners 2 year old iPhone SE2 (128GB) for £250. That makes the Pixel 6a £49.

Any higher value codes going spare? I’m about to spend £100+ : )

Nice. Tempted to do this for my partner who’s SE needs charging throughout the day. My 2 year old Pixel 4a can go 2 days between charges.
Why is the the 6a suddenly so cheap?

Small 0hiro didn’t work for me sadly due to the bulk/length of the arms. I only wear a light merino base layer and power grid fleece beneath my warm layer. The XS was too tight in the chest although the arms were spot on.

@kimura54321 it’s a useful way of looking at it. My wastage is probably 2/3 of that and my beans are between £19-£30 a kg per month. So the upgrade to a Niche from the Mignon would pay for itself after roughly 10 years, less if coffee prices continue to increase or I waste more.

I still think £500 (or more) for a grinder is a barrier to getting people into great espresso at home. You can single dose for less than half that money if you accept a small amount of wastage.

I only use Volvic in my Europiccola.

@kimura54321 I purge the grinder before every shot. The Eureka Mignon retains <1g so the wastage is minimal.

Why chance stale beans Batfink. It only takes a few seconds to open a sealed container so seems odd not to make it part of the routine. I can single dose using the manual override on my Eureka Mignon, closing the gate stops ‘popcorning’. There’s really no need for everyone to buy a Niche for more than double the price.

Your Mazzer is a budget commercial grinder engineered for a commercial setting.

Some good advice from Batfink but the final para creates a variable. It’s generally accepted that single dosing by weighing the beans for each shot directly from a sealed container will improve consistency. If you half fill the hopper the beans beans at the top are being exposed to air for longer periods before grinding.

Have a look on Sportpursuit. I don’t agree that £100-200 is expensive for niche shoes. It’s one of the few contact points on a bike.

As above I’ve pretty much ruined any chance of enjoying a shot outside of my own kitchen. 2nd hand Europiccola combined with a Eureka Mignon Crono (2020 version) is my budget setup which has the potential to make incredible little shots. I say potential as the margin for error is small and even after 1k+ shots pulled I still make silly mistakes.

Lake for sure. I have wide feet and their standard shoes fit me well. Their leather is very supple (whilst robust) and will stretch to give you a snug fit. I prefer the BOA system to velcro as it can be micro adjusted.

Harman Kardon Citation One MKII ticks all your boxes. I’ve got 3 set up around the house. Great sound (2 can be stereo paired) and bargains to be had on eBay.

Thank you. I’ll definitely look at the positive pressure systems before we start renovating the house. Parts of the house are still wet from historic roof and bathroom leaks and the central heating system is inadequate. Once the house is drier we’ll use the dehumidifier for laundry in the conservatory to save using the tumble drier in the winter.

Thanks jeffl, will start with one unit on landing. What’s the best technique do you think, keeping windows slightly cracked to promote airflow or does this encourage more moisture from outside?

Decided to go for the 12L Meaco MeacoDry ABC. Anyone know whether it’s worth setting two up in a largeish 3 bed semi? The house isn’t breathing amazingly well atm and we’re in a wet part of the country. Thinking one up and one down.

I’ll avoid Maglite and look at Olite or Led Lenser.

Thanks Ambrose. My sister in law et al live up in Ammanford. Is anything doable on a CX bike?

Thanks all. Still here Daffy. We moved during the heatwave last week so this cooler weather is appreciated. If only the roof wasn’t leaking.

Well…it’s happened. We moved to our new place in Gowerton last week. Still can’t quite believe that everything came together. Everyone has been incredibly welcoming and it feels like a good place to be.

Just need to buy a MTB now : )

Ignored my instincts and swapped the BB. Same issue so it’ll be going back. Could do without the hassle atm but equally don’t want the hassle of knackered BB’s for the bikes life.

Bought in a recent sale but plenty more in stock according to the website. Other reviews of the bike were positive but I’m guessing not everyone checks these things before riding. The drivetrain feels rough when spun backwards with the chain attached so I’m also wondering if the rear wheel is out of alignment.

I’d be happy for them to build up a new bike with the components used if they can guarantee no issues. New BB arrived today, gut instinct is to send the lot back.

Thanks All. Swapping a threaded BB is fairly routine for me and as Superficial said it gets me riding quickest if the BB is the problem (only bike atm). Only thing is I suspect it’s a frame or installation issue and if I remove the BB and replace it who’s to say they won’t blame my workmanship.

The retailer isn’t known for their customer service although I believe it has improved a lot in recent times. The odd BB cup must come out of production with an issue so it seems fair to try a new one before sending back at their cost.

    Tough call…

Sram GXP on a carbon CX frame. No spacers needed as far as I’m aware.

Just did something similar. Sold a PX Tempest and bought their XLS EVO in their June sale. Takes 35c (maybe even 38c) tyres which should be plenty. I know what you mean about wanting something ‘nicer’ than PX but the pricing for the bigger brands seems unjustified.

Neither, seriously. Frome, Warminster, Westbury, even Trowbridge are all better options.
