Loving the quotes, so many great movies. Although I only flicked through I didn't notice anyone mentioning Apocalypse Now:

"I love the smell of napalm in the morning…smells like victory".

Although for me its Willards monologue and narration that makes it.

True Romance – Gary Oldman (Drexl):

"Y'know what we got here? Motherf****n' Charlie Bronson"

True Romance again – Dennis Hopper (?):

"The moors, they did so much f****n' that they changed the blood lies forever" speech. In fact the whole of that scene with Christopher Walken. Outstanding.

Most of the lines by Brick Top in Snatch.

Not a film but class writing all the same:

After Mike had rolled and sank the canoe at Rough Ramblers…

"So it wasn't so much an eskimo roll, it was rather a case of rolling right inuit!"

    "…Inuit's another word for eskimo!"

    Spaced was just **** awesome

Oh my God! I've got some **** Jaffa cakes in my coat pocket!

    I'll stop now.

You have your main spider, then a 16T ring, then a red shim/spacer, then 14T I think followed by 11T ring and then lockring? Or something like that. The shim goes between the 16T and 14T though fo sure.

If not can any Orange 5 owners with Deus XC cranksets check? Can you see a black and red spacer (from the bb towards crankset)?

Have a 5 myself and the pivot bearing change is very quick and simple indeed. Although it might be more bike than what you are looking for from the spec. Due to its single pivot simplicity what about a Cannondale Rush?

£240 on Ay-Up lights was and still is a source of amusement to my non-biking friends. About to click ‘buy’ on a RF Deus XC crankset today and I may treat myself to a new wheelset next month.

Errr, thanks dirtbiker, I’ll consider that as a final option.

Thanks Jay. The shifter being rebuilt is different to the one I have at present although the lever mechanism is similar.

What I have managed to do is piece it all back together apart from the spring shown in the second diagram of step 10.

    I’ll keep plugging away.

    How do Pook

Aye, Sheff is the best city to live in.

I rode the classic Ladybower loop (Whinstone Lee, L’bower, Lockerbrook, etc) last night in the warm evening sunshine. Fan-bl00dy-tastic. Not much work on today so revising. Just cleaned the bike and will fit a new rear mech and chain in between chapters this afternoon.

We did Dubrovnik, Korcula and Miljet in ’07. Fan-bloody-tastic. Great weather, nice people, great food. Would like to go back again this year to try more islands/see more of the country. Interestingly enough Plitvice was high on the ‘to do’ list.

Pasta, bacon and courgettes with pesto. Thought I’d carb load as I’m off out on the bike later on this afternoon in the Peaks.

I suppose that was my reasoning for my OP. I thought I’d read somewhere that steel was more compliant than alu. Is that right?

The back issue does concern me slightly but the strain was not caused by riding but by a lift and twist movement after a ride (putting the frame into the boot). A H&S no no.

I certainly wouldn’t be getting rid of the Five but it would be nice to have an alternative to spice things up a bit. Maybe provide a different approach to my local Peak loops, look to improve technique and less maintenance come winter time.

Hmmm, thanks folks. That’s certainly given me something to think about. I suppose having had HTs as my first 2 bikes (in ’91 and ’98 respectively) I wanted to get away from the XC racer type geometry. At the same time I don’t think I’d opt for anything too burly.

shellac, you struck upon a point there that does concern me though. My back. Having strained a muscle in my lower back 4 weeks ago I’m gently getting myself ‘back’ up to speed. Would a HT be generally more stressful to the lower back?

Have an Orange 5 myself and love it to bits. Had it for 2 years now and wouldn’t swap it for anything else. Does it all. Bikes I like the look of and would like to try (and also fit your requirements) are:

    Lapierre Zesty
    Cannondale Rush
    Giant Trance X

I suppose it doesn’t matter what the brand is or model. Its whether it feels right to ride and is suitable for the riding that you do. Try a few makes and models or attend a demo day.

You probably gave her the clap, hence why you changed her life. Either that or you knocked her up. Either way delete is the appropriate action.

Riding solo is a selfish indulgence for all of the reasons stated here. And I love it. 80% of my riding is solo and all of my night rides are solo. Love the sense of isolation.
Granted its also nice to ride in a group but on average this is no more than two others.
Well done FC on finding yourself again.

Poo. Too small as its only 17″. He needs a Large. I’d go sit on one and see if they’ll let you ride it. I think they’re a good bike and I’m sure current owners will tell you the same. There is one on ebay for a grand. 08, medium, hardly used.

I ride a 5 at present and really like the look and feel of the Rush. Wouldn’t swap my bike for one but I’m trying to convince my dad to buy one so I can borrow.
Single pivot, light, reasonable amount of travel for the majority of UK riding, decent spec components. Say no more.

    DO IT!!

I had my Float RLC ’07s done 2 weeks ago. Service + Lowers £220, Hope Pro II 15mm conversion kit £16, Hope Brake Post Mount £10.

The nice people at Mojo even replaced my crown and steerer as a good will jesture (I knew nothing of this until forks arrived back). So I’m now the proud owner of some shiny black Float RLCs.

Although I didn’t really notice much difference the first couple of rides (due to the conditions, speed and environment I was riding in) I’ve started to sense they offer more stiffness, security and have been able to hold my lines better in sections of my local loop where I’d get pinged about or drift.

I’m please with the outlay anyway. Decided for a performance outlay and got a cosmetic one thrown in for good measure.

I’ve done my rear brake hose recently. Complete pain in the @r5e. Tried several methods, one of which was the one Sandwich mentioned although I was unable to fit the grommit back in. Thats only part of it though, getting it out of the swingarm is also difficult.
I used a small piece of spoke. If you remove hose at caliper end there should be very little loss of fluid. Screw in spoke, lube it and guide it through grommit and through plate in swingarm. Once through I used a pair of needle nose pliers to grasp the piece of spoke. You then have to carefully slightly bend the spoke, as you slowly feed the hose through the swingarm some more.
Len, spot on with the gear cable, feed through inner, fish it off with hooked end of spoke (spokes are great for this), feed outer back on.

Stato, just thought I’d mention that the new brake mount adapter is called a ‘H Bracket’. When I removed my existing adapter which is an IS to Post Mount for 183mm discs this is classed as a ‘J Bracket’.

Thanks Stato, I’ll ring the LBS and ope tomorrow to confirm. Just thought I’d got everything covered by buying the 15mm hub conversion kit. Just want to test the new forks out asap.

    STATO – Mono M4s 183mm Discs
snaps – thanks, thought they might be the mounts I was after having had a quick look on CRC for mounts with the right type of mountings.

Just checked my gaff. I can see myself sat at the office desk doing a hard days work (or not as the case may be).
Didn’t notice the car driving up the street, but it was taken on a Thursday morning. The bin men had been and Mr bin washer had been round already. So pre 10:00. It must have been September time last year as the house opposite was still up for sale and the one a few doors down had not gone on the market yet. Brilliant tool.
Yep, rack isn’t bad, those Nether Edge girlies are something to be desired eh sq225917?? Muha. Muhahha. Muuhahahhahhaha. I’m off to do some stalking.

Second the Endura glasses. Approx £13. Great fit. Condensation/mist free. Look good and come in loads of shades. I opted for the blue tint as pictured which are great in all light conditions (except the night, therefore I’m buying some clear ones for that).

Thanks guys. This maybe a stupid question but how do I know whether its metallic or powdercoat? If it helps its an Orange 5 ’07 in Silver. So it’s all one colour.

I think part of returning the bike back to Halifax was to have a respray but also for new bearings, graphics and to have the frame fettled/tested.

I’m going to try gingerflash’s suggestion and use colourmagic to see what effect that has.

    lol @ wors

you missed out brown y fronts!

Damn right noteeth. That copper was pure evil. Dude looked like a ****’ weasel. Superbly acted. The evil twin of life on mars as one review put it.

Paddy Constantine is a class act, not seen A Room for Romeo Brass yet but another Shane Meadows film I rate highly is Dead Man’s Shoes. That is truly frightening.

Interesting article by one of the guys from Torq in Issue 46 (I think) about battling colds.

Very much in the vain of mrmichaelwright. Take well over the RDA for Vit C, take other multivitamins, lots of garlic, echineasia (?), cod liver oil, etc, etc Can’t remember the specifics and its not at hand but OD on all the good stuff to flush it out your system.

Rode last sunday with the start of a cold. Felt great while i was out. Got worse once I’d finished. Rode again this morning with a smear of vicks under the nose and I think I’ve now seen the last of it.

    Good luck.

Penmachno is the better but the decision is easy…….ride both. Ride Marin, grab a bite to eat in Betws and then ride Penmachno then head home completely happy but spent.

Loved it. Was really looking forward to it after reading a preview and it didn’t disappoint. Shagging, rain, biege, torture, death, brown Vauxhall Vivas, serial killers, bent cops, Wakey. What more do you want. Best bit of TV this side of Extreme Fishing with Robson Greene.
Can’t wait for next week’s episode as the stories are connected and its based around the Ripper.

Seen some really good films on DVD in the last 6 months:

No Country For Old Men, In Bruges, The Kiterunner, Gone Baby Gone, Before The Devil Knows You’re Dead, Knocked Up, Zodiac, The Last King of Scotland, Juno, Atonement, Cloverfield, In The Valley Of Elah are the highlights.

Have Gomorrah arriving in the post today courtesy of Lovefilm although I’m saving that as I’m watching Red Riding on C4 tonight. You might want to leave the film and watch this instead.

Thanks gingerflash, will this also resolve the dull paintwork issue which is my primary concern as it likes tired and faded? I’ve tried car polish before (AutoGlym) but it does not do the trick.

Had Maxxis Advantage before MK Pros and the Advantage are not as fast rolling.

Conti MK Pros 2.4s. The ones with the Black Chilli Compound. I’ve been running them for a year and found them to be very fast rolling. My local loop has approx 6 miles of road sections and they perform fine. Grippy in most conditions apart from the dreaded sloppy mud.
