I did have issues with my RP23 squeaking in the first year. Mojo told me that there were known issues with some of the internal seals and that these had been corrected in newer versions. They corrected free of charge under warranty and I've not had issues since

Maybe the '09 shocks have similar performance related issues?

Is there also a case that single pivot designs create much more stress on the shock than linkage driven ones and perhaps need different components/adjustments/fettling/settings?

hora – give Mojo a ring and talk through your issues/concerns and current setup. I've often found they are very helpful and will advise on the best approach.

Sounds wonderful mate. Never really considered it as a holiday location until I saw it on Rick Steins Asian Odyssey programme. Looked amazing. Sounds amazing.

Back to reality now though fella

I've prob got a different RP23 to yourself hora as I've had my Five since May '07.

I usually set mine via the sag method, between 25-30% depending. I'm 13st, run between 160 and 180 psi with 2 to 4 clicks back from the slowest rebound setting.

[swinging handbag indiscriminately] Don't get me started on riders wearing armour. Are they newbies progressing to proper bikes but a little scared of grazing their knees? :D

Good point stevomcd and one I've considered in retrospect. I do think that being able to provide a grid reference would have sped up the process and avoided confusion.

in the right hands….sure….but more often than not, in my experience of riding both HT and FS and riding with mates who have both…..No.

BTW Blower I was joking, I should hae included HTs are only ridden by homos, dwarves, ethnic minorities or porterclough.

    KingofBiscuits

    Yes, obviously :D

If you ride a HT than you're either new to the game or can't afford a proper bike or have switched back from a proper bike because you think its cool or switched back because you dare not reach speeds proper bikes can reach or its winter.

IIRC one of the riders did not have cycle specific clothing on and was wearing trainers. Having passed them on the way up Mickeldon Edge and watched them come down the switchback section in Cranberry Clough they lacked confidence and conviction and were relatively sketchy.

Therefore I made the assumption 'newbies'. Put it this way they would have not looked out of place just pootling around the reservoirs.

thisisnotaspoon – no I did not have a grid reference as I know the area and route and did not feel it was necessary to carry a map.

As stated I informed the operator the location twice on the original call and then provided the grid reference when using the map in the information centre at Fairholmes (although this is when I rang the emergency services back up after seeing the chopper circling the car park).

slowrider – Luckily for me I'd completed the Cut Gate and Langsett loop and was waiting for a couple of mates before heading back to Fairholmes for a cup ' tea and cake. The only inconvenience was to ride that distance at break neck speed with tired legs.

I do agree though, it is a fantastic ride, but very remote and challenging. It is also very fast in places with large rocks and drops. Not something I'd honestly recommend for two novice riders.

I presume they sent the chopper in case the ambulance was not able to access the injured rider.

I think both riders were relatively new to the game. He was riding a rockhopper and his mate was on a commencal HT.

Having watched the fall he did slam hard. TBH, I expected him to have smashed his face in because he didn't use his arms to break the fall. Just a big body slam face down.

Tough job for the emergency services as I suppose they dont know what to expect and what the surroundings/environment is like. In the end I'm sure they just used the ambulance and drove up to the slippery stones and walked from there.

Glad to hear he was in good spirits though.

Yesterday made me realise that The Peaks can be an unforgiving place and I'm sure he's thankful that it wasn't miserable weather.

****! You wouldn't catch me doing that Nicky. Only for the brave/stupid/skillful (delete as appropriate).

hugo, if the Alpine is what you're after then go stick the insurance money down on the bike and pay a miniscule amount monthly on 0%. Simples.

elaine, you would be better off replacing the stick-e Nev on the rear with a DTC as these are slow draggy tyres due to the stick-e compound.

Nice vid Will. I think it encompasses the quality of the descents around the varying loops of L'bower. My fave is the descent from Lockerbrook to the road. Super fast. Although logging has messed the approach up.

Might go and ride there this afternoon if I can sneak out of work and Cut Gate and Langsett is a definite for Saturday morning. You gotta love dry Autumns in the Peaks.

Would love to see the Rushop Edge and Roych Clough descents captured as I really enjoyed these last Saturday.

Missed out on the lovely weather on Sat but rode the Dark Peak Kinder Circuit on Sunday. This was the first time riding this loop and thoroughly enjoyed something different in the Peaks. Tough, tough climbs and very technical descents.

Met a cool couple and their collies that I shared Hollins Cross and Rushop Edge with but apart from that all the other riders were coming from the opposite direction.

    Great pics shortbread, looks fantastic.

I've owned it 5 years, covered 70000 miles in that time, it has great mpg, it has a bomb proof engine and has never really needed anything apart from the usual tyres and annual service, reasonable handling for a diesel, great m'way car (sits quite happily at 80).

As I now work from home its main function is dog and bike carrier. Although I am considering selling/px it and buying a diesel estate (Passat, Mondeo, Octavia, 9-3, Accord?) as more space is required (for those weekends away with missus, bikes and dog).

I had a freak accident nearly 2 months ago now (my left lower back decided to connect with a concrete bollard at the side of the road) which resulted in a lot of bruising and swelling.

Now that it has all gone done and cleared up there is still an area from spine to hip that feels funny to touch and when pressed or caught right stings/hurts. I went back to the docs last week and he said it was probably a haeatoma and that it would eventually go away.

Best to go to the docs to get checked but the usual diagnosis will be a prescription of MTFU. Well thats how the docs put it but in a nice way that uses such words as 'ibroprufen' and 'physio' if it doesn't go away.

Chill Winston. I also ride Whinstone Lee Tor both directions (flag stone climb from side of L'bower and the climb from A57 up the side of the L'bower Inn). As you say, each has its own merits and which route i take depends on what loop I'm doing and from what direction or indeed what i fancy that day.
At present I do think the flagtone climb direction has the edge for me but I love the compacted smooth sandstone climb to the Tor from the other direction.
Just ignore and enjoy whichever route you are riding safe in the knowledge that you know the climb both ways and those making comments may not have that benefit.

    Cheers jim

So generally fast rolling, not a great deal of grip as the tyre is upright due to lower center tread and pattern, aggresive side knobs for grip when the tyre banks into corners.

Therefore it slides then catches/digs in/grips.

    Hmmm, interesting.

That bit in the vid, in the cage, when shes lying flat and picks her @rse off the floor…..bingo.

I'd tap that for sure, with her consent of course, or with the use of rohypnol.

She does a lot for Cha-raa-teee apparently in her native Columbia. Don't know how i know that.

Think Wiggle own brand DHB? always seem to get good reviews from the media. Shimano and Specialized offer budget shoes worth investigating.

I also bought the DVD recently. For £2.79 its a bargain. Great film. Very atmospheric. At present I keep getting cravings to watch random films. At the moment I'm hankering for First Blood.

So far I've tried a physio (although that was for me left knee which I twanged when trying to power up at climb at Llandegla out of the saddle) and she gave me a routine of exercises for knee and glute strengthening, lower back and hamstring stretches and something else.

Then I tried a Chiropractor for my back and she did some manipulation one session and then rubbed (massaged) my back a couple of times to relieve the tightness/muscle locked symptoms. This was OK but my back was already getting better so I could not tell whether this was making a big difference.

Just found this guy in Sheff…

    http://www.activehealthcareclinic.co.uk/Site/about_us.html

I might have to search and post for physio/osteo/chiro recommendations in Sheff.

This brings me back to my original question. Can you ask for x-rays and MRI scans?

Had mine 5 since May '07. I got the default Silver colour for the Pro and its beginning to look tired so I'm considering a repsray. That Apple Green is a nice colour.

Is an Osteopath the same as a Chiropractor? And how do they differ from Physios? Its all black magic to me.

Quite strangely the comments on this post ring bells. My pain is at a certain point in my lower back where a tightness forms. It feels like a point on my pelvis. I'd love to get it correctly diagnosed and treated.

thanks surfer. I'll investigate. I do try and stretch but can be lazy and as you said once the problem subsides you stretch less. Do to the injury I've not been able to lay flay on my back (due to swelling) so stretching has been difficult. i also need to improve core strength. I suppose that my frustration is that whatever I have does not seem to be diagnosed by the GP and therefore I have to look at alternatives. Osteopath looks a good bet.

Hmmmm, interesting. Can you request x-rays or mri scans on the NHS? I've had a reoccurring back problem for the last 2 years. I've recently recovered from a bad crash, started riding again, but I'm out of action this week with a 'groin strain'. Although the movement in my right hip has seemed limited and strained for a couple of weeks prior. I've also been experiencing a tingling sensation in my foot (same side).
Everytime I go to the docs they just say ibroprufen and if it continues then you should consider physio. Of course physio waiting lists are immense so you end up going private.

Wharncliffe or Cut Gate are no where near Leeds.

It's not rained in Sheff all week and it looks like a dry weekend too. There is potential for a drier Cut Gate (as it was a bit sloppy last weekend). It should be a good weekend of riding in the Peaks where ever you opt to ride.

Watched most of the show. It still seems completely surreal to me having watched it that eventful day and seen programmes like last night year after year. They should continue to show these programmes to help people remember how tragic it was. Like the holocaust, WW, 07/07, etc. These events define history and should be retold. Its just very saddening that individuals or members of groups would want to inflict so much damage and loss of human life.

What chills me to the bone when I see it are the jumpers. What must have they been thinking to make such a decision? Its natural for the human or any animal for that matter to preserve life yet they were willing to jump to their deaths (from one of the worlds tallest buildings) rather than face death by fire/smoke/building.

Not sure I've noticed any sanitised trails in the Peaks? Granted I only seem to ride what seems to be the endless variations of the ladybower loops but they seem the same now as they did 4 to 5 years ago.
The only mess I've noticed in the last few weeks is due to logging or forestry work on the far side of Ladybower and near Lockerbrook farm.

As for trail centres. Not in the Peaks please. The reason I love riding in the Peaks is its natural which provides different challenges and benefits over the trail centres. I do like trail centres to keep my riding varied and they also usually offer quick fixes. Long fireroad climbs, loads of fun downs.

My only complaint about sanitisation is Porter Clough climb that was flattened and resurfaced. Although from what I've read this was done by the local farmer in order for him to access his land.

Dude stop sweating over hope pack this and maxle that. The important factor is getting the sizing right. I'm 6ft and ride an 18". Its perfect for me and i made sure by having the bike for a long bank holiday weekend many many moons ago.
I upgraded my '07 Five Pro with the Hope and Performance packs because they provided better components than the stock options and a lot cheaper than purchasing seperately.
I opted for the upgraded Float 32s RLC over R due to alleged better damping as the Float Rs seemed to have a lot of brake dive during my demo. I think it only cost £100 extra at the time.
It has a QR back end which feels perfectly stiff and fine for the riding I put the bike through. If the maxle is not much extra cost and weight then go for it. I'd probably opt for it.
I've upgraded to QR15 lowers at the front and there is only a noticeable difference in certain situations over the standard QR. As the QR15 is now de rigeur this is not an issue.
Just make sure you get the correct size!!! Go find a demo bike before spending your money as its a costly exercise if you get it wrong.

Sorry didn't read original post. You may want to check with Orange whether your BB account will remain open or will be cancelled due to lack of facilities i.e. telephone line.

If not then you can cancel your line with BT, get another provider, and reactivate your bb on this line.

Although thats generally how it should work i think you are in for a lot of headaches and swearing and lack of bb.

    KingofBiscuits
    Free Member

If you cancel your telephone line it will cease your broadband. If you are into a 12 month contract with BT for your BB then they will expect you to pay for the remaining contract term.

I would look into your BB contract first and if possible cancel this before your telephone line.

LOL @ mt – I have a black lab thats not quite two yet and his name is Marley. We named him after the book (and now film). Indeed he would quite happily drag me under a bus for a chip.

Suggestions – Dave, Ted, Winston, Riley, Harry

I've always liked Colin myself which was the name of the dog in Spaced.
