We had a letter the other day from a window/conservatory company that have started fitting solid roofs with windows in. Roofs are made of plastic but look like slate or pan tile. Whole thing is insulated and you have a choice of ceiling finish and lights.

No issue with planning and can just be retro-fitted to existing conservatories. We’re looking into it as ours is either stupid hot or freezing.

Can you let me know how that goes and cost /m^2 please?
We had a flyer through recently too which caught my interest.

We have a oil filled radiator in ours in addition to the combi fed radiator which was already there.

Combi rad is turned off and the oil rad heats up the conservatory when needed.

Despite his opposing plea, he was chomping at the bit to punch the horse. His family are concerned that he was in no stable state if mind at the time due to constant nagging from his wife, Filly. He regrets his actions and with hind sight should have trotted on that day.

The ‘nag’ horse botherer deserved the sentence. If you read his statement he tries to dismiss the offence as an act of self defense almost when the footage clearly shows him square up to the horse before punching it. Hiding his face with a scarf and claim it was for a sore tooth? Lying ****.

Can’t comment on the other sentencing as I haven’t read about it.

My wife once did one of these by accident. Friends of ours had to be housed in temporary accommodation as their boiler wasnt working properly and their house had high levels of carbon monoxide.
My wife text me this and was worried about our house (no link but sensible to be concerned). Discussion moved on to carbon monoxide detectors.

Her following text was ‘I’m going to order some come detectors’

Gleen that opinion direct from Wikipedia? Yes, bricks are porous but once inside the cavity, how does this moisture get out? Via the found?

It is for the exact same reason your eaves are ventilated.

There are many reasons why the cavity was introduced, not just shody materials. How often do you see masonry piers in modern houses? It’s s benefit of the additional depth the cavity brings when tied correctly.

This is a very subjective subject. A new build, detailed correctly should not pose any issues for the future, but retro-fitting to an older building has potential problems.

Cavities were introduced for two main reasons, insulation and ventilation.

Yes, the insulative quality of a void is not as good as filling it with specific material, but in doing so you can reduce if not sometimes eliminate the ventilation of moisture.

This can cause problems inside the internal leaf, but the biggest problem is if the two leaves have wall ties. New stainless wall ties with a drip are ok, but cavity insulation which holds moisture against older ties will soon corrode them, specifically if the insulation has a high Sodium Silicate & Chloride content such as a Rockwool type product.

I have been involved (years ago now mind) where the external leaf has been removed to re-fit wall ties and then re-build due to cavity insulation corroding the ties. There are new retro-fit methods that do not require the removal of the outer leaf, but can still be costly.

I’m not against it personally, but ask the installer plenty of questions and ensure he does the job correctly for your wall construction.

People say ‘pan fried’ to make it sound posh, because ‘fried’ sounds common

But only because lamb sandwich sounded a bit wrong.

Because the blokes on the shop floor sometimes like to have a marked up drawing in front of them for checking.
I know a lot of places are getting more hi-tech now and will have display screens everywhere for a paperless environment, especially the ones who’ll accept a 3D CAD file. But even then, how do you know which dims to check against a CAD model?

I am still in the dark ages myself as I prefer a paper drawing and scale rule to interrogate a drawing. But I also see the delays caused in moving information in and out of machines as we have not yet fully moved away from paper and have yet to trust data transfer en-block.

Unless you’re also doing a 3D laser-scan to check the final shape.

    Or one of these 8)

My last place had one and all modelling was transferred from the CAD system via a CNC file convertor, into the CNC bending machine (With display screen which provided dims). Finished products could then beck scanned by the Faro arm, the data from which uploaded back into the CAD in .STP format for checking. We could literally model a pipe and have it bent in fifteen minutes (In ideal conditions etc!).

The bending machine (Cold formed hydraulic pipe upto 110x12mm) had an integral spreadsheet for each pipe dia and wall thickness which contained a correction factor so if the machine did not bend the pipe to the exact angle for that particular bend radii, this was over-written and corrected for the next time.

Sounds like you need a decent draughty to do the drawing for you…

what sort of shape is it, just out of curiosity. Can you post up a pic of the formed part?

I think that this is the OP point though? Why transfer something from within the digital environment, via a human, back into a digital environment only to print to paper?

Don’t get me wrong, you are right in that’s a simple solution, but I see so many thing being double handled where the right software (And the right user in the first place) eliminates so much repetitiveness.

The project I’m running atm requires a part as a sub-assembly exactly in this manner. We have sub-contracted this element of the works out to a company called Midtherm laser in Dudley.

Excellent quality, fast turnaround and good news for you, they prefer .step files do they can flatten the developed plate to ensure the end part matches the model.

They are laser cutting and cnc folding sheet gr. 2205 stainless for me in 1.5mm and 3mm thickness.

    Ask for Dean.

A collegue of mine once said that it was self evident that single men know more about women than married ones, otherwise they’d be married too.

However, do you know the difference between a boyfriend and a husband? About forty five minutes

I didn’t take you seriously there.

We are both self employed. He works in forestry and occasionally I help him on bigger jobs (which I am grateful for) which subsidises my income which in turn cements their point of view that I am inadequate and a failure.

Put your price up. Significantly. See how much he relies on you.

Personally, I wouldn’t confront them with this. If they do indeed take pleasure in putting you down, then they are the sort whom won’t heed the meaning behind your plea and see weakness.

    Slightly differing view.
I have a HTC 1 x as my personal phone and a 920 for (supplied by) work.

The HTC is far far better. I am constantly frustrated with the Nokia.

It may be that I’m biased but Ive given it six months and I’m still of the same opinion.

Battery life is brilliant though on the Nokia.

Jon Taylor, I was involved with the hydraulic control for the ramp on Deep Energy before i left to go to my present role. Very interesting project to be involved with.

OP, do you plan on staying up in Edinburgh? I know of a couple of very good companies up that way who I have been involved with in the past. Both provide cutting edge design, doing almost the same thing, but from very different perspectives.

MacTaggart Scott[/url] produce a lot of items for the MOD. I’ll leave that there.

Artemis are a very aspirational company who have a high percentage of very clever graduates and are developing new methods of doing things.

Both, from my experience, are worth a look into.

I didn’t see the sob story

It was the first part where she had spent the majority of her life savings, only to have to knock it down. Must be a bit daunting for a person of a certain age with no experience of building.

I too felt compelled to post about this.

Bit if a sob story to begin with, but totally messed up by arty farty architects who insisted in doing things differently.

Differently is good if you have enough money to fund this, or have the skills to build yourself/ manage the build from experience.

That woman was very naive and listened to those architects only to have a house internally clad with OSB as a wall finish. I have an OSB board on my garage wall to hang tools from.

Good effort on achieving a weatherproof shelter for 50k, but at a personal cost imho.
