I still have the USB cable from the phone before, a Nokia Navigator. Once the HTC cable began to do this, I just reverted to the Nokia one and have had no problems at all.

Me and some colleagues at work have come up with an idea that is nearing the end of the patent process at the moment – critically, we also have a licensing agreement with a large multi-national in place to exploit it, so there will be cash at the end of it. Not large pots of money, but it means the companyy won’t have to worry too much about income levels for many years to come…… so I can carry on surfing here and call it ‘work’

At the start point of something very similar, although I am pondering if I should Patent.

My idea is automotive related which I have not been able to find anything like this which has been done before and would look to license it out.

Rough figures are based on last year number of cars sold;

Uptake = 1%
License per use = £10 (haven’t the foggiest if this is too much or too little)

Annual income circa £20,000.

^ Just for UK sales.

Anyone on here work in the automotive industry??

I’m possibly over thinking this. Do you mean a steel plate anchor for your bike?

SCDW?

What are you trying to anchor back? How long is the anchor, what dia (assuming circular) is the rod and what size hole?

Ooo, the suspense.

Depends on where you drill through really. If I was considering this, I would also consider welding a plate over first, drill through with an oversized drill bit then have this seam welded so that you don’t reduce section size.

This is possibly not as simple as just the price of land per m2.
IF the remaining houses have been fully designed, then you are asking for the drainage and levels to be adjusted to suit this shift. Then there is the legal implications of defining a property boundary and registering this with the land registry and local authority.

Good luck!

My o/h has just got the Galaxy s2 on Talk mobile for 30pm but only on a 12 month contract. All other provider’s are 18 – 20 month. Apparently, Talk mobile are using Vodafone signal so shouldn’t be any issues there.

Nearly, and just last weekend as it happens. I was driving with the family to the ‘weekend country residence’ on a country road near Barnard Castle. It wad around half six and this particular section of road was slightly uphill.

Anyway, I caught a glimpse of what I thought was a rider through the glare of the sun which was quite low. I moved over to the right to give plenty distance. Mrs J asked what I was doing, apparently drifting onto the opposite direction lane just as we passed. She said not only did she not see him, she would have hit him, and if I’m honest, I was very lucky I saw him when I did or I probably would have.

There was another time when I was merging onto the A19 during rush hour traffic in the depths of winter. I just missed this fella who was riding with no lights on the bike. A mixture of idiocy and luck.

Hi-Viz, pot o’ paint etc.

That said, recent regulations have been to de-sterilise mixed use areas. The thought being that after years of adding signs, markings, flashing lights and other forms of warning, both pedestrians and motorists become complacent with all of this and either ignore it, or have information overload and ignore it.

By removing the signage, people will approach a crossing with more care and due consideration, not relying solely on the car having to stop.

<Not saying I agree with the sentiment>

Riba is the place to enquire. They also produce a ‘catalog’ of products for architects to specify from called Riba product selector. I don’t deal with them (different discipline) but seem to remember they vet ideas and may be able to help in other ways.

There are other institutions, for example if it is mech or elec fit out product, maybe cibse is the way to go?

You went wrong by placing this thread in the bike forum 8O

Seriously though, how long did the person writing that reply take to ponder how to be more polite than the necessarily need be?

Take the plus points and move on.

Yes. And yes.

I was swayed by the offer of decent money whilst studying for my first HND.
Four years of management later, I decided to go back to engineering. It was a long 7 years of part time diploma followed by BEng, but was worth it.

I love going to work and my past experiences have helped me more than the traditional route could have.

It will be hard to do, but if it feels right, go for it.

Yes, but you decrease its mass as the water is removed.

Heating will achieve this but if you increase the passing air flow at the same time, more moisture will be removed. The analogy would be washing on the line on a hot day then warm windy day.

Pyrolysis <quickly googles to make sure > is heating without oxygen. The air flow in the stack would be oxygen deprived so should aid this.

kevj

Or you could just stack it next to the stove to dry

Yes, but the relative calorific energy of charcoal is greater than that of wood due to pyrolysis iirc?

kevj
Free Member

Serious question here,

Would it not be beneficial to have a chamber at high level within the stack where a small amount of wood is stored?

Any heat at this point is waste and the energy be used to speed up the seasoning process?

I don’t mind most security questions but what gets my goat is when they ask me to confirm my telephone number.

Er, its the eleven digits you just put into the phone at your end and also happens to be the correct code for my little box of tricks that just rang. Which I have just answered.

I’m hoping you realise being ‘gelded’ is something VERY different???

Yes, but I have the same apprehension either way. I am somewhat attached to them :D

Well seeing as Mrs J is pregnant with my third little boy, I have been told I have to be gelded too 8O

I have said for years that I’d get it done but now it is on the cards I can honestly say I’m bricking it. A mate of mine is booked in this Thursday and we had a chat about it over the weekend. I suggested a space hopper race which didn’t go down too well!
Anyone had it done while they were put under? <serious question>

Place I’m at is looking out for FEA/CFD mechanical and structual engineers (get in touch) and I know must of the companies in the supply chain to BP, Esso etc are recruting like crazy but can’t find the staff

Do you work for OGN by any chance? A few lads I have worked with in the past have moved over to the hardrian yard, they are paying very good rates atm. One lad has gone contract draughting and has been told the job is there for at least five years.

We do civil and structural consultancy work for another outfit on the south of the river. Normally they would fabricate two or three modules a year but this year alone have seen 5 load outs and we are currently in the ground for another.
There is a huge push in renewables and the background professions are all stretched, particularly in the NE.

mtb guide Derek Purdy has several good routes around that area.
Also, Kielder Trail Rievers has a good forum with plenty of local knowledge of good trails.

Doesn’t NHBC only cover 12 years?

Generally, yes, but if someone else has made a claim within the 12 year period and has proved negligence, there is a possibility the op could too. It gets complicated and is probably not too much for just a porch.

Onzadog, I think you may have answered your own question. Get a quote from a decent builder to demolish and rebuild the porch. Consider this cost against what you think the house may loose in value.

Where are the cracks and what part of the front door is catching?

Are the neighbors cracks similar?

So my question is, what’s the difference between subsidence and bad workmanship? It is time to claim on the household insurance and I’m I right in thinking that in real terms, I’ve no comeback on the surveyor?

It could be other factors tbh. If other properties nearby have similar problems then it may be an inadequate foundation local to the porch. If this was isolated, then I would look initially into the ground conditions but as you suggest it is common, it maybe a poor foundation design or the contractor skimping on materials, ie concrete and or rebar.

Check with your solicitor who you bought the house through to see if it was covered by nhbc.

You probably face a fight either way and. I would advise you employ a structural engineer to make an assessment which would add significant weight to your case.

If you shoot in raw, then Rawtherapee is very good for a free program. Not as powerful as others but certainly is worthwhile having to tinker with until you wish to upgrade to something more expensive.

Edit; can be used for jpegs too but really excels in Raw format.

I have just scrapped the wifes 52 plate Seat Leon for £250, collected from our house.
I may have got slightly more for it spares or repair on eBay but once you have taken into consideration fees and hassle factor, it was a no brainer.

kevj – there are trees – some conifers form the boundary of our plot instead of a fence. they are 4m tall and the closest is about 2m from the house, the majority are about 5-6m from the house.

I would almost certainly cancel out tree influence. If they had been mature deciduous trees, then they can have an affect on clays local to foundations as they draw water, particularly during dry spells (Of which we have certainly not had)

It maybe roots, but again, 4m conifers will not had a significant root system, at least, not one which will affect the foundations.

If you are concerned, buy yourself a Tell-Tale and record the crack over a period of months to see if it is propagating. Note, the second reading may show significant change, use this as the datum and refer any changes to this only, not at the point of installation.

My little lad (20 months) would not sit on a potty at all, but he was always fascinated when his older brother used the toilet so we gave that a go. He took to it straight away after some initial apprehension of actually sitting on the seat.
We have since got him a reducer seat that fits on top of the main seat and a step.
We also keep his nappy off when in the house and give him little reminders every now and then. In the three weeks or so we have only had a couple of accidents.

EDIT, actually, thinking back, we did encourage him to use the toilet/ potty, but he showed an interest himself, calling for me to help him on that first time. He did it again later that same day too.

As above regarding clay, if the crack is cyclic and can be counted in single digit mm, then there is nothing to worry about. It is simply the natural clay heave associated with wet and dry weather.
One question though, do you have any trees nearby and if so, what species and how far from the building?
