You want a tapered headtube, 150mm forks and 142mm dropouts but don't want it to look burly …..

    Drac,

What model stove is that and what is the heat output, I like the look of it but only have a small room so don't want to buy something that will melt me!

Was there just the other week, it certainley is the middle of nowhere – infact I would describe it more as a road junction with an overpriced services, a Tourist information and a very very good fish and chip shop than a settlement as such.

We rode from there on the WHW to Bridge of Orchy then went from Bridge of Orch on a fantastic wild country route following 4×4 trails and other tracks cutting directly through to Loch Etive and then following the loch bank into Taynult. Then the train (only three a day) back to Tyndrum.

A big but brilliant day out. There are some wet feet river crossings that were knee high when we were there following some rain so not one to do it has been raining consistently for several days I guess.

That looks good for the 2009 fork but for the 150mm 2010 version there is no mention of travel adjust like that….

So does that mean you can no longer do it I wonder?

+1 Black Mountains Killer Loop. I think you will find no shortage of rock on it, espcially the final descent. I can't remember too much dull slog though inevitably there are some large climbs.

I have also done both of the routes from the BikeBase website over the past month, both are very good. though do have a higher % of grass!

Brecon Beacons are only grassy away from paths, the paths themselves are plenty rocky. If you look on the Brecon Beacons National Park website there are some routes. Personally I would avoid 'The Gap' route at weekends, it will be heaving with people.

Can Fox Float 150 be reduced to 130 or 150?

Use the Cardiff East P&R so long as you will be returning there before it closes (last bus back 7pm). Only £3 per car and the bus priority into town will be far better than queuing with fellow speedwayers (no doubt with air horns).

10 minute walk from where it drops you.

    Both seem the same price.

I've used a few and IMO the 'Freeliner' version here is excellent, not too big, easy to take off, degree of waterproofing and you can rotate the map.

The first one posted will have serious speed implications due to surface area!

    sub floor is concrete.

I haven't yet chosen a floor type but I am thinking solid wood or engineered, I am not sure how these would fit together or to the floor.

I am rather new to these sorts of decisions but have to make a decision quickly and don't want to regret it!

Thanks all very useful. My quote is around the £8k mark so that sounds about right.

Funky – I am in S. Wales but thanks for the offer.

The builder is looking for a deposit now and suggesting 35% upfront. I realise there are materials and the risk of getting things ready but this seems quite a lot to me but then I have never had a big piece of work done so nothing to go on. Any thoughts or experience on what the right level for a deposit is?

I have been waiting to do it myself for 8 years, I've now given in to the fact that I am not going to espcially if it would take 18 months, which I think it would using only weekends and evenings so I am paying up and keeping my weekends and life!

Thanks for the cost idea M_F much appreciated and I know from reading your posts you are in the know as far as house works/improvements are concerned.

Thanks for all the info, this is the tour I was wanting to compare with:
    http://www.sacredrides.com/tours/utah/slickrock/

We went to British Columbia in Canada with them last year but I wanted to make some comparisons before paying out a whole heap of cash!

I just wondered if the price and local knowledge might not be quite so good as we had in BC as they are locals there.

Western Spirit look a similar kind of outfit but tours are often shorter.

Food for thought, thanks loads for all the suggestions, the DIY angle has grown on me somewhat too, perhaps two weeks with the second under our own steam would be a good way to do it.

I am new to the whole Linux thing and it works a treat. No regrets but interested in the ability to run MS office (and yes I know open office is pretty good).

Interesting stuff, you are kind of interesting me in the DIY angle but the guiding (and learning new skills from them) and organisation of all the bits round the side was so enjoyable last time.

Sounds like we should plan for less Colorado more Utah if it is to be October that we go.

What type are your mudguards Zaskar, tidy looking.

My commuter is a 1997 Rockhopper, rigid. 7 speed friction gears, 105 rear mech. Frame is covered in inner tubes.

Just in the process of some upgrading works after the last drivetrain did its 3 year term of duty.

Highly recommend considering a dynamo front hub, permenant availibility of lights independant of batteries has been brilliant.

Hi I have the Dakine Bag/Case and may be interested in selling (great bag but limited space at home causing issues).

Chose it as like you I decided it offered a great compromise of protection. It is very easy to wheel around and very stable. Only downfall is narrow doors or luggage trolley width restrictions.

Absoloute zero damage to bike on both legs (but granted I spent a lot of time packing it).

Compared with my friends simple padded bag the amount of swearing induced on a Cardiff – Calgary trip was at a ratio of around 1:1,000!

Only used once for that trip, e-mail me if you are interested (address in profile).

I bought a Knog Skink rear light, It looked like it should have been ideal for salty roads but it took only 6 weeks for the water to make the electronics go loopy and unreliable, occasionally turning off (not good). To replace it I got an 'Electron Nano' simple light which has no seams directly in the line of fire and is still working 3 months later as well as being far brighter. Cheap too, see here:

Definatley a good idea to do it and I found it very easy despite having never serviced forks before. Search on the internet for a good guide, I think I used the one from the Enduro seals website.

Recommend doing it outside if you can as it is kind of hard to contain the oil once it starts coming out! Or over one of those large builders flexi buckets.

    Interesting and largely positive comments.

Resistance to scratching and damage sounds good, I'd like to think it had the potential to refinish but in reality I doubt I would ever do this so the former is probably more important.

It has been suggested that it would be best to fit by floating on the existing concrete floor (perhaps after levelling with screed as I don't want the floor rocking and flexing).

I have ordered some samples now, from internet pics I agree the 'carbonised' version looks good not that I understand what on earth carbonising is!

I've found pedalon.co.uk to be good for spokes.

But if you are certain on the size and buying in multiples of 32 then CRC or other usual suspects might be worth a look.
