True macro (ie. 1:1) lenses can be pricy, but not necessarily needed assuming macro in this context means close up images. The thing will be to find a lens with the right combination of focal length and minimum focusing distance.

I’ve been recommending Crank Bros Mallet shoes since finding them myself, they’re nice and wide at the toes.

They have, it’s just that “starts quickly” hasn’t been deemed a feature that sells TVs, and they can tell people to leave it on standby instead.

Dusted off the mountain bike (literally). Had a fun ride but no confidence to take on any of the trail features.

Started getting chilly half way, here’s a nice view of the motorway.

3 hour road ride today and I’m exhausted. I’ve fallen into the same trap I do every year of not making myself go out and get fit until summer’s already here. Hoping I’m up to an mtb ride tomorrow before the rain ruins everyone’s street parties at the weekend.

Mine hasn’t shown any signs of a permanent indent. I rotate it every few months so weight isn’t always on the same spot.

    I like mine.

Not much to say about it but I’ve had it 6 years now and it’s still comfortable. John Lewis were stocking them at the time, don’t know if that’s still the case but I was able to lay on one before buying.

One issue the Dutch might have is that they won’t be used to passing cyclists as they have cycle paths almost everywhere so coming across a cyclist on the road is quite rare

Wasn’t my experience there. Away from the cities and main roads there was a lot of roads with shared space and the drivers were far more aware and considerate of passing me than in the UK.

    Ted Lasso is great.
Severance is one of the best shows I’ve watched for years.
See is very good but might be channeling the walking dead a bit too much.

Slow Horses was kind of bad, aside from Gary Oldman.

Ok important question, can I get a pizza in an air fryer somehow? Pretty much the only thing I use my oven for.

No I don’t have anywhere to put a pizza oven.

    You should charge them occasionally.

Leaving on charge permanently sounds like a bad idea.

    =IF(ISNUMBER(SEARCH(“abc”,A1)),”Text if yes”,”Text if no”)

Is a basic formula to fill a column based on text search, easy solution if you’re just looking for one string. If it’s multiple strings then a reference table and lookups.

IF(AND(conditions) If you need both columns to match, I wasn’t clear on that from your question.

I must live in a small batch local roaster wasteland because I don’t see any nearby.

Anyway I’ve been happy with Rave. Reasonable prices and plenty of choice. I did try Square Mile as well and it was nice enough but they charge 50% more.

Thanks, I’ll check out those sites. The light seals look a bit crumbly but seem intact and otherwise I think it’s in better condition than my digital camera.

Probably not the ones you saw but I’ve just got these and they’re wide at the toes: https://www.tredz.co.uk/.Crank-Brothers-Mallet-E-Lace-MTB-Cycling-Shoes_232429.htm

I found an explanation here: https://www.sansmirror.com/articles/choosing-a-mirrorless-camer/autofocus-systems.html

tldr DSLRs use a separate autofocus sensor which is good at tracking movement and small changes in distance. High end mirrorless cameras have largely caught up now. For static subjects it’s not really a concern.

There’s hundreds of these “simulators” on Steam being churned out over the last few years. They look nice in the screenshots but all use the same template.

I’d suggest the xt2 or xt20 then. I think both should be sub 500 with a lens.

The xt2 is from their higher end range, they’re not as compact but have an extra control dial, more of a hand grip and weather sealing.

I have the Fuji X-T10 which gets recommended a lot and I like it very much, but it’s probably not the right choice for action photography.

Getting reliable focus on fast moving subjects is a skill I haven’t mastered yet, and while the newer Fuji bodies should make it easier I understand they’re still some way behind Canon and Sony for AF capabilities.

The immersion comes more from matching physical actions to the virtual ones than the graphics.

e.g playing games where you “walk” without a joystick feels very weird, but playing a gladiator combat game or a racing sim with a wheel is great regardless of the graphics.

I’m quite sceptical it will take off as an artistic medium any time soon just because of the barriers to access but it’s certainly cool what some people are doing with it.

Crank Brothers might be worth a try, I’ve just got a pair and they’re a nice fit after finding 5:10s and Shimano too narrow. They suggest going half a size up for wide feet.

I’m still wearing my mountain bike shorts complete with pockets. It’s not very gravel but on the upside I have pockets.

I was given one of the chain rehooking tools, it seems like one of those things designed by someone who has an image of riding a bike that doesn’t match the reality. Not sure of the point in carrying a tool you hardly ever need for something you can do with your fingers.

It makes me a little sceptical their tire levers are going to be useful.

As someone who’s never resorted to shitting in public – what is the correct thing to do here? Should they take bags with them?

I have Juin hybrid brakes – not sure of the exact model but I can’t tell the difference from fully hydraulic brakes in practice. I prefer them to the SRAM Rival I had on a previous bike.

I had a visit from our local british flag party representative. He was very keen to explain how they will build more roads and also preserve our green spaces (other than the roads they would build over them). I also gather from the leaflet that they oppose “cancel culture” which must be a major issue for the town council.

I’m not sure about them not having access to the tech – lots of phones use 3rd party chips. I’d imagine the cost for a camera manufacturer to use that instead of their existing platform would be high, but might be viable for companies like Sony that already make phones.

Digital cameras already do a significant amount of processing on their images but it’s aimed towards capturing a detailed raw file from a large sensor – I think it’s still a challenge to do that as well as all the stacking and whatever else phones do. My camera takes a noticeably long time to catch up after shooting a burst or a long exposure as it is (maybe a bad example, it’s from 2014).

I think cameras are behind phones when it comes to “computational photography” as they call it, but it’s heading that way.

Phones compromise on image sensor and lens to fit everything in a small package, but dedicated cameras compromise on processing to provide speed of use and battery life. Digital photography is battery intensive and I think a lot of the market for high end cameras would be put off by shorter battery life, longer delay between photos or a bulkier camera to do extra processing, especially when post processing is a standard part of their workflow.

I’m not sure where this is going other than arguing for fun, but isn’t the best camera the one you like using?

I think anyone interested in photography needs to at least try a DSLR (or similar mirrorless), because for me it made all the difference. Having a physical object to interact with, all the controls at my fingertips and a choice of lenses means I enjoy the process of taking photos much more, which means I’m more likely to learn and experiment and be creative with it.

If you’re not that interested or if you’ve tried it and find carrying the camera around to be a chore, then by all means stick with your phone. It’s great that I can have a very capable camera in my pocket and I get a lot of use out of that too.

Are you having to enter the bitlocker key every startup? I don’t think that’s how it should work.

If it’s just a one off I don’t understand the issue.

You can’t if the manufacturer isn’t providing updates anymore.

Depending on your level of confidence messing with the phone (and whether it’s supported) you could try another OS like Lineage.

Looks like traffic has been bad this week. You don’t have to queue with the trucks but they close part of the motorway for them, I’d plan for some delays.

Edit: that’s for Dover, no idea about the french side.

I don’t think current gender classification for sport is really helping anyone. There’s been non-transgender female athletes barred from competing because their physiology gives them an advantage – can’t imagine that happening for men.

Until someone can come up with an effective way of classifying physical capability regardless of gender, we’re stuck with what we have, and excluding trans athletes doesn’t seem at all fair. Is there any actual evidence of trans women dominating female sport or is it all scaremongering?
