10.2 gb of documents is your worry, figure out what they are and whay programs you need to open there. That’ll determine whether you need a laptop of tablet
listen to this man. What applications are you using for these? Whatever you buy you want to be sure you can run that program.
The easiest and safest option is to buy a similar laptop to your work one, you know how to use it and the reason you want something else is not because it does not suit your needs.
Dont buy an android tablet expecting to replace a laptop
KelliesherosFree MemberErr…….
i think the OP needs to be clearer what he is trying to do. You can save Apple Music albums and downloads offline to your device. But they only stay in the Apple Music app, they are not accessible anywhere else.
It is the one lace requirement which is making it hard to answer. Is that place Apple Music or google play music? One is potentially possible the other is impossible.
KelliesherosFree MemberThe OP wants a SAK replacement, everyone is recomending single blade pocket knives.
I had a Boker Tech Tool, recently lost it (gutted), my response is that i would rate it above many victorinox knives, better steel, held an edge well and the tool selection is good. The pocket clip and glass breaker on all of them are nice additions you do not normally find on a SAK.
Swiza do a SAK style knife which looks good, however you need to make sure that you get the UK legal version.
If i was going to get a victorinox, i would get an alox pioneer x.
KelliesherosFree Membergot these after a similar thread. Happier with them than the Ankers they replaced.
https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B017I9CBPC/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Pretty certain that they are identical to the ankers that are mentioned above, they also seem to be available branded as mPow.
The ankers are a couple of quid cheaper on amazon, I have some and they are perfectly usuable. mainly use them for teleconferences with my laptop and listening to podcasts, however music sounds reasonable to me (my hearing is shot though)

Double tap the clock to go to the top of the page – really useful on safari when reading long pages, works everywhere though
long press or push harder on newer iphones on the new tab button bottom right of safari, allows you to close all browser tabs without going to the crazy swipey page.
If you have apple pay setup and still have the home button, double clicking the home button when the screen is off opens apple pay and will authenticate. keep your finger on the button and it stays awake. I always do this in the queue before i get to the cashier if i am paying for something like a coffee. So much easier than waving your phone at the terminal waiting for the card to appear then authenticating.
hardest thing for me to get used to when swapping from android was no back key, now i find myself swiping everywhere on android phones, and cursing the lack of swipes…
KelliesherosFree MemberWonder if they will hold the software programmer liable for the death.
This is why the Trolley Problem is a factor in autonomous car design and legislation.
KelliesherosFree MemberThe above are good suggestions.
Calibre Bossnut is a good chunk cheaper (£1000) use some of the difference to buy a dropper post and decent tyres.

KelliesherosFree Member@tdog – it’s detrimental to the environment because of the shear computing power being used to mine the Bitcoins, which uses electricity. Some of which does come from renewable sources, but the majority of which (I’m guessing), doesn’t.
but have you actually stopped to consider the energy cost of other currency’s or even the energy cost of the internet, which you are using?
A quick google shows that the internet uses 70 Billion KWH a year!
This site[/url] claims 32TWH which i think is the same as 32 billion KWH.
So bitcoin, whilst indeed consumes a lot of energy, it is less than the internet, which has it mission critical uses, also host a lot of cat pictures and porn.
How much energy does it take to extract gold, refine it and transport it? Printing paper money is i doubt energy neutral and a lot of it gets destroyed or replaced every year.
It is easy to hear headline comments such as bitcoin uses as much energy as denmark each year, and assume that it is bad.
KelliesherosFree MemberSimplest answer – download itunes, subscribe to podcasts, open podcast folder within the itunes folder, drag and drop files to mp3 player.
Itunes haters will scream about this, but the fact is that itunes has about the best podcast listings around (many third party apps use itunes to get the podcast listing).
Most podcast apps are designed to work on smartphones nowadays. Podcasts use RSS for distribution, so you may be able to use an rss reader for that, although they are getting harder to find. Spotify will play podcasts, unknown if they will let you download them.
KelliesherosFree MemberFull Moon Fever was the soundtrack to one of the greatest summers, I ever had. Never really listened to his other stuff, but that one album has a special place in my mind.
So much so, that i have never felt the need to comment on a RIP thread before tonight.
Cheers Mr Petty, RIP.
KelliesherosFree MemberAre other things like bbc iplayer, behaving the same (i.e not working)? then there are two possible options 1. your chromecast has dropped it’s internet connection, or 2. your laptop has connected directly to the chromecast via wifi, not your router.
If iplayer and such like are working as expected, then the most likely reason is that ITVplayer itself is throwing a wobbly.
As i have mentioned before here, the chromecast actually tries to grab a stream direct from the service. when you click the button, if there is not a cast available stream, then it then will try and cast the webpage.
pro tip, turn everything on and off again, including your router.
KelliesherosFree MemberSurely being 16 months old makes it vintage and they won’t stock batteries for it anyway.
Sorry to ruin your conspiracy theory, but they still sell the 6s. So battery supply is not an issue.
KelliesherosFree MemberHave i been transported back to the late 90’s or early 2000’s….
OS Fanboys need to move on.
They are both really good mature operating systems, with their own quirks and slightly different user paradigms. There is much more in common between them, than different.
The only things about windows 10 which annoys me is the amount of data it sends home about what you do, and i find the default settings around the task bar and start menu, massively cluttered. However you can get rid of all that and you can kill cortana eventually. Turning on my new laptop to be presented with adverts for candy crush, really is not on for a product which i paid for.
KelliesherosFree MemberThe thing which the makes the most difference for ground coffee IMO is the actual coarseness of the grind. I have bought some premium ground coffees and they have been okay, but i find that the grind is normally to coarse and do not work well in my stove pot.
Lavazza black, sainsburys espresso, and the waitrose own brand in a tin work best for me. Illy works ok as well, but for the price i get an eual cup of coffee from the sainsburys own brand.
I have a coffee grinder and occasionally think that i should freshly grind my beans, but to be honest, it’s not worth the faff for me.
KelliesherosFree MemberIn my opinion, whilst you could do this without a cloud service, it is likely to be a janky, overly nerdy solution, which ultimately means you spend so much time administering it, that it becomes useless.
so options.
1. google photos – download app to phone, download app to PC, point PC app to store copy on NAS. whenever your computer is on and connected to WiFi, it will update the files on the share. (free and easiest solution)
2. the same with Icloud – Download icloud for PC and set it download photos to the share. As above, whenever your PC is on and connected to the internet, it will download your photos and save them to the share.
If you are not prepared to pay for the service you have to manually delete all the photos off your phone after copying existing library to the share and ensure that you delete the photos off your device regularly This deletes them from the icloud storage, but not your local copy, keeping you within your 5gb limit. Downside – you cant view your photos from years ago on your phone, if you are a cheapskate.
3. Once a week plug your phone into your laptop and set it to backup your photos to the share. This completely removes any cloud paranoia you may have.
I am a bit of a tin foil freak and don’t like having all my information in google services (they have my calendar and email) so i keep my photos on icloud, but if i didn’t care about google tracking my every move i would use google photos as it is a really good service.
KelliesherosFree MemberI killed the contactless on my card by washing it, tumble drying it (which bent the card to the shape of the drum) then using an iron to flatten it again. et voila a non contactless card.
To be honest though if you are worried about the small possibility of someone reading your card, buy a RFID blocking wallet. It is probably less hassle than the above.
Personally i love contactless payment, but like many have mentioned i use apple pay (or android), this uses an encrypted one time use tokenized system which i think is far superior than just using the card.
My actual cards now live in my work bag, and i only get my wallet out when making purchases above 30 pounds, which is quite rare.
KelliesherosFree MemberIf anyone is thinking of buying a chromebook this is a handy link which shows which existing chromebooks will have google play support.
one of the biggest problems people have with chromebooks is the lack of MS office support, google play has all MS office apps within it (not exactly the same as the desktop versions but pretty close).
I wouldnt buy a chromebook now without checking it has google play support.
KelliesherosFree Memberit is CES this week, it maybe that a lot of them are showing out of stock, is that they are about to be refreshed. With chromebooks getting android app support, it may be worth waiting and seeing what is released this week if you can.
this is likely going to be announced.asus chromebook

Biggest issue with a Chromebook is it only works properly if you have an internet connectionIs bollocks. All google apps (gmail/docs/sheets/whatever their powerpoint thing is) work offline and can store stuff locally. most of your storage is cloud based, but you can store stuff locally.
Newer chromebooks run android apps and no one says your smartphone stops working when you drop out of signal.

KelliesherosFree MemberI wouldn’t bother tagging, google photos has some pretty nifty image recognition software, it basically knows what is in your photos andauto tags them.
I gave some examples earlier, but how it works does not matter, it is that it does work!
For example, if i search for fireworks, it returns pictures of fireworks, even though i have not tagged them, and they did not occur on a specific date.
TRY IT!!!! think of a photo you want to find. search for a date range, or a location or in the case of the BBQ example, search for BBQ!
Seriously stop asking questions on here and sit down and try it for half an hour.

EDIT: what scot routes posted whilst i was typing again… that’s spooky
KelliesherosFree MemberOP, i don’t think google photos is for you. To be honest, no photo management product is for you, as i am struggling to think of any one which would be able to create a file structure such as you have described. Not folder/subfolder but family/bbq, the best you will get is year/month/date of import.
There is nothing to stop you creating your own (frankly crazy) folder structure outside of google photos. However you will have to manually import all of your own photos from all of your devices. That is the real nub of the problem, you are trying to bend googles offerings to how you see they should be used, you want the benefits of auto backup, and ease of access across devices, but are not willing to accept the compromise.
Which is more important to you? auto upload / back up of photos from your phone / other devices, and access from all devices at the cost of using search. Or a file/folder structure at the cost of having to manually administer your photo library and remembering to having to import and categorise everything.
None of this solves your first problem (running out of storage), which ironically one of the solutions was to manually manage a file structure, which you seem to have failed to do.
Good luck,

Hold up there. You can easily run two Gmail accounts on the one Chromebook, you just have to sign out completely, back to the login screen again.
You don’t even have to go that far, you can be logged in to multiple google accounts in Chrome, all within one logon session.Go to the gmail inbox and on the far top right click on your account icon and select “Add account”. You’ll be asked for the alternate google account logon details and then you’re logged in to that account too. Drive, gmail etc all work.
I did not say you cant easily – i was pointing out that the original poster is having difficulty doing this, as his posts allude too, and that if he is struggling to manage one account, running multiple accounts i cant see ending in any more clarity. KISS.
Sadexpunk.
re photos. Think of google drive and google photos as 2 separate things. Google drive is just storage, all your photos exist there, but in one big folder of images. Google Photos is a way that you can interact with that folder of images.Like most things googley, they leverage search to enable you to do what you want. go to google photos on he web and in the search bar, search for a location you have been to. Google has some clever (but not infallible) algorithims which allow them to categorise and understand the contents of your photos. for example search for “meat” and revel at all the pictures of bacon you have taken. or “car” and see all the ones which contain a car.
You an organise your photos into albums, in google photos, but it never actually moves your photos into a separate folder containing those photos, rather it adds some data to the image saying that it belongs in this folder. This does mean that you could have one photo which exists in multiple albums! it doesn’t copy your photo, it just says it should exist in both albums. Another way of thinking about it is, An album is just a saved search.
Google leverages search to find what you want, meaning you do not have to create massively complex file structures.

edit: what scotroutes said, whilst i was typing.
KelliesherosFree MemberOP, Just pay the £2 a month. Without being rude, if you cant work out what the people above are saying, running two gmail accounts on one chromebook is going to be a long term exercise in frustration.
Whilst i accept that you had issues previously, you have been running this setup for two years (in order for the free tier to run out), so it has worked! personally the amount of time you have spent trying to nickle and dime the situation has probably cost you more than just paying for what is an excellent service.
oh and
IMHO £24 pa for 100gb is expensive. Yes there is the backup angle that says cloud is “safe” but my £50 1tb usb drive is 5yrs old, so that’s 1tb for £10pa which is 24 times cheaper.
I assume that your hard drive is accessible anywhere (i.e away from home) and on multiple devices. It also gives you access to email, document creation and synchronisation of folders across devices. If you look at it as a price for just storage, then it is more expensive, but you are comparing apples and oranges.
In terms of cloud storage, i think it is the best deal, dropbox is a pound for 20gb.
G
KelliesherosFree MemberHow much space do you need? (how much are you currently using) Google drive is IMO competitively priced for cloud storage.
£2 a month gives you 100gb.
£10 a month brings you back to 1TB.
(or you could you know buy another chromebook!)I personally pay for 100 gb and that is enough for me to have a cloud backup of my photos, my documents and keep gmail running. Having a local backup as well is still important, but using a service like this is an easy and cheap way to ave an offsite backup, whilst still being able to access my stuff from whatever device i am on.
G
KelliesherosFree Memberwhen you say you cant work out how to reboot tv, are you saying you cant turn it off? 😀
If turning it on and off doesnt work, then i would uninstall the iplayer app then reinstall it.
Last resort, check and update the tv’s software, (in the settings).

KelliesherosFree MemberIf you have a hatred for BT, it is worth knowing that Plusnet are part of BT!
Whilst their customer service representatives are reassuringly northern, pretty much everything else is the same as BT.
G
KelliesherosFree MemberOr another option. Create a new google account for your son (which you control and know the password for) and use that to log into the tablet.
I have done this for my kids, it means that they can use certain functions, such as hangouts, which they use to message and video call me when i am away. It also means that s they get older, they have a gmail account and if they want to purchase books, films etc, they are on their own account.
Knowing there account name and password, means i can set up all their accounts on my device, keep them seperate, but still monitor their usage.
Either way, works, it depend i think on how old your kids are, and how important keeping the usage seperate.
G
KelliesherosFree Member+1 from the above.
One thing which piqued my interest, is that this is unexpected i.e it sounds likeyou dont know why it is being suddenly offered. What problem are you trying to resolve with your current website? Increase traffic / business? Streamline a business process by implementing self service or booking? reduce costs?
writing the stories above is easier if you understand what the outcome should be.
KelliesherosFree MemberRe: your Iphone – read the below link, it appears that you can download other apps to playthe music on your phone. may be worth a shot if you do not like the stock solution?
Android: Is the issue that you are trying to put music you purchased from itunes on it? whilst itunes music has been copy protection free for many years, i know that there were several albums in my music library which would never play on android, because they had been bought prior to DRM being removed. You can remove the DRM i think but it is a faff, and involves itunes match – i.e you let the evil cloud have a copy of your library delete your local copy and then download new DRM free versions.
KelliesherosFree MemberSadly, it’s all part of the current obsession with having everything ‘in the cloud’, which results in idiots uploading everything to some cloud-based source, or just ditching all their music and relying on streaming media, which is just so short-sighted; unless, of course, you never move away from any known wifi hotspot or 4G phone signal.
9 out of 10 for the anti-cloud rant, but i am not sure you can blame the “cloud” for the poor interface decisions – especially when you can play locally stored music quite easily through apple music..
OP – the new apple music app on ios 10 beta seems to be simpler, it still has the weird bar, but it also has a simpler navigation list which shows playlists, artist, albums, songs and only downloaded music. The question is whether or not you will be able to update the app without upgrading to ios10 (which you cannot).
G
KelliesherosFree MemberThat’s apple music rather than itunes isnt it?
Either way, the answer is no.
Although if you go to settings and turn off, show apple music, for some weird reason it makes the heart disapear, but still shows library, connect, radio and search.
weirdest setting ever.
Sorry.
KelliesherosFree MemberInflatable kayaks are not inherently any more dangerous than a rigid craft, however, they are designed to be easily storable, which means that here are some downsides in terms of performance.
If storage and transport is not an issue, i would always recommend a rigid craft. they just perform better. Also consider that lakes/rivers and the sea are very different environments, and one craft to do all three, normally means compromises again. For example touring on rivers and lakes, the best choice is without doubt a (canadian) canoe. I wouldn’t take one of those out in the sea.
Sit on tops are another option, better in the sea, but wetter, so touring is not really their thing.
Finally in terms of safety, i would suggest going and doing a course, or joining a local club for a few sessions. This will ensure that you understand the basics of water safety, and how to rescue yourself when it goes wrong. It also allows you to understand the impact that different water conditions have on a craft. I would suggest that most accidents, occur when people underestimate the impact of wind or higher water levels have. When things go wrong on a spate river, they go wrong badly and quickly.
Finally, do it! Paddling is a wonderful activity and has so many disciplines to explore. I have taken my family paddling from when they where toddlers, they love it.
edit: Another thing which puts me off inflatables, is that they might be easier to store and transport – but god are they a faff to get going. My open boat, i rock up to river take boat off roof, and throw it in the river. I dont have to spend 30mins pumping the goddam thing up. Also my open boat is 15+ yrs old now – it is still solid, and i bought it second hand. It probably has not depreciated in that time. Inflatables i doubt have this level of longevity.
KelliesherosFree Member1. DCIM stands for digital camera images. So when google says it is trying to sync 700 photos, are you sure that it is not doing as youvaaked it too, but have confused it by putting music files in a digital image structure?
2. As you have your music uploaded to google play, why do you want to back it up again to google, you are storing it twice in the same place! That 1tb of storage is not free, I suspect you get it with your Chromebook. At the end of 2 years you will need.to pay for it. Play music is always free. I suggest if you want a proper backup, by a cheap hard drive and save it there.
KelliesherosFree MemberI think your in trouble. There are ways to unlock passwords using developer tools, but you would have to have enabled USB debugging before hand.
One other way worth trying is to plug in a USB keyboard via a USB otg cable. Boot phone and enter passcode. This might sound crazy but I can plug a mouse into my phone using one and I getva little mouse pointer on my screen. Otg cables can be got on amazon for about a pound.
KelliesherosFree Member@h4muf… Where is that? There are some sandstone caves near where I grew up (bewdley) and looking at your photo stream, I see a river and a steam train, but it doesn’t look right. It has been 25 years since I have been back though.
KelliesherosFree MemberSo reading and listening about this I have come to my own conclusion. However these were the salient points for me.
It was a government issued phone, and the “terrorist” had over phones at his disposal, all of which he burnt apart from this one.
The FBI have access to the Icloud backups as there is a clause in whichever amendment which states that if you share the information with a third party you forfeit your amendment rights.
So basically the only data on the phone they do not already have is the encrypted I message data. I struggle to believe a terrorist would text message his handlers on a government issued phone, and if he had been so stupid why did he not destroy it with the other phones.
This is in.my opinion an attempt to weaken personal encryption by making gain Out of a terrible event in order to achieve political aims.
KelliesherosFree MemberMine did similar (although cracked into three pieces) but it was after a lot of hard use. I too went and bought a steel replacement and it has been fine ever since.
It has not stopped me buying another set this week, although I went for.the steel option straight away this time.
KelliesherosFree MemberI’s been 10 yrs since i have been there.
Ajaccio is a large modernish seaside town. Corte is a medieval town up in the mountains (fantastic hazlenut beer here). St florent had a riveria style vibe going on. we stayed a couple of nights in the scandola nature reserve which is famous for its red cliffs.
For what it was worth, i preferred the maquis to the coast. Consider moving around, it is a fantastic place to explore.
