+1, planning on a weekend up there. GT sat afternoon, Inners/Caberston Sunday.

When it’s -X°, especially on the road bike, you need to spent time moving your hands & fingers to ensure you’re getting blood flowing.

I got some 100% brisker after the last thread. they have a normal thin palm and a slightly thicker back. Ideal for MTB when you need to still feel the bars. Ideal for 2° to 10° IMO.

Oh that’s very nice indeed. I’d absolutely need to see more detail showing clearance for proper tyres (+ mud)

I’m not sure why your clicky link doesn’t work so here’s another one

I’m assuming that you’ve got the kit covered (I haven’t read the entire thread).

When I went with my in-laws on my rifts ski holiday I’d made the mistake of having a few lessons at the M62 snow-place (XScape?). I could link snow-plough turns well enough that we thought I’d be ok to join the family for a bit and do a bit with the Mrs.

I then got a few hrs private lessons while out there.

I’d have been much better off joining a week’s ski school – both for my own enjoyment and progression – and for the rest of the family who spent more time on blue runs that they’d have liked.

Even if it’s a school/uni group there might be others doing the ski school thing so they won’t be o their own.

yet at the same time miles behind the blokes

yes, because we see gender parity in other sports, like tennis, road cycling, boxing, swimming, athletics, triathlon, and football. Maybe we see parity in Equestrian events (I don’t know) but that’s not really a sport. And neither’s golf 😉

5 sets of those plastic tyre levers with slots for $50? Sign me right up!

Or more likely, buy some cheap On-One or ebay pliers and take a hacksaw to them 😆

I’m in for the PMBA Nat Champs at Grizedale/Graythwaite. I won’t be troubling the top half of the field but the trails at Graythwaite are so good it would be shame not to.

And Ard Rock and Ard Moors.

    Maybe also the Edinburgh Half.

Skankin – sorry for the late reply – I have the Versa shifters.

The ball of the foot is clear, but I reckon the buckle might be a touch too far forward for many people and their pedals.

Also, my experience with similar overshoes (the old MT500s) was that the toe of the overshoe would get pulled up and off the shoe at the slightest hint of a walk/push/dab.

Mine is a Singlular Peregrine, very happy to share info by emial if you want.

I run 42 front 20 rear, with approx 700x35c tyres. Enough to get up fair hills but not spin out unless downhill with a tailwind. I live and used to ride it up and down the hills of Tynedale.

I now have an SLX chainset with only the large ring left on. I use a 3/32″ singlespeed chain for no particular reason, although IIRC Alfine kit is designed to work fine with 8 speed chains.

The peregrine has an EBB so no tensioner is needed.

You should not need a NW chain ring and you’re almost certianly get a longer life by using something cheap and steel for a chain ring.

    Old Pic, might not work

Would you want your ice spikers for that then NW, for the compacted snow? Or still soft enough for regular tyres 🙂

Lots of folk moan about it

On the whole, it’s not bad. Lots of people will miss out but that’s always going to be the case. On the plus side, so long as you have one (or two) mates with ninja internetz you can get the whole gang entered and ride as a bunch of mates. Y’know, kind of the whole point.

I got the Mrs a new commuter with the Gate carbon drive, Shimano hydraulic discs and and an Alfine 8.

V nice. Silent, smooth and near enough maintenance free. Keep tyres inflated, batteries charged and an occasional hose-down (lots of wet leaf mulch on the roads/paths at the mo). The only thing that’s needed attention so far are the Scott branded mudguards coming a bit loose.

I like these titchy ones like One Up etc, no reason for anything bulkier with a narrow/wide ime

I’ve had a 77 designs one* for about 3 years now – they’re great and help when the NW is so worn that the chain retention has started to drop-off significantly.

However as it’s not a completely closed cage, the chain is able to be forced past and it can be a right pain to force it back past the guide and on to the chain ring.

*the design now being licenced by Wolftooth? actually, theirs looks different, must be someone else

Cheers for the offer NW, but it was definitely a road stud tyre rather than a MTB stud tyre.

Maybe I’ll just go and ask him.

    Nah.

1st ride on my Marathon Winters this morning. Angry, metallic Cornflakes. Feel like a bit of a plum riding through quiet streets away form my house.

Happier when I get the the icy stuff though.

Are there any alternatives that have a less aggressive central section of the tyre? I’m sure an old workmate had some that when pumped up hard had studs that didn’t make any contact at all. Let the pressure down or lean and you got contact. Anyone know what these might be?

Apparently most of their customers like to match components when something launches and would not consider mix and match, even if it was with a higher groupset.
I paid c£60 for my XTR shifter compared to the c£75 the XT was selling for everywhere else at the time

Yeah but a little bit of you dies inside every time you change gear 😉

YOU ARE THE REASON THAT TRAFFIC JAMS EXIST. GET OF THE FUKKEN ROAD YOU NITWITS.

Sorry, bit extreme for a grumble, but I nearly missed collecting my parcel yesterday because of these absolute plums.

    Thanks for the reply phil.

Given that no one seems to have jumped at the chance of a social ride and given the weather recently (apparently it’s been wet?! 😆 ) the Mrs is trying to persuade me to not bother with bikes and we’ll go walking instead.

I could be persuaded to still bring a bike though.

Yes, that may be why eBay have ruled against the OP, but assuming that the OP is a good chap* and that the buyer started a frivolous case against him, do we not agree that the OP at least deserves his property back?

Is it because it’s now muddy and the miniscule clearance between the teeth and chain is being filled with grit, so the chain is getting stuck on the the chainring?

Can you reproduce it with the bike on a workstand?

My cheap NW chainrings had a bit of chainsuck when they were brand new. After a couple of rides it disappeared.

there were a couple of bikes stolen in Inners at the weekend too, one in broad daylight outside no.1 cafe.

I’m glad for my vigilance that I always put the bikes away and lock them up when stopping at the cafe 😥

Erm, I should be working, but can you use the properties of an arc (using radians) vs a chord (using trig) and then find the radius of the inner circle (the tangent of the chord).

Of course I may be missing something and I may have misunderstood the Q 😆

Depends on if there’s any snow and how long it hangs around for.

    My 2p on Nobeer’s route:

remember that the section along The Knott to Boredale Hause is cheeky. When I last walked it there were laods of tyre tracks being cut through the grass by those not skilled enough to ride the footpath. there’s no shame in having to push a wee bit on a footpath. There is shame in eroding a new chicken line around the ‘difficult’ bits and creating a mess of the footpath.

Not a bad ride either 😉

I’ll probably get flamed for this but I’m not even sure why H4H should exist.
If you decide to be a soldier you know the risks, you know you might get shot, you might get blown up. You also get paid.
Also, when sending troops in the government also know the risks, they should take care of them.

Why is a charity needed to pick up the pieces?

In my mind a charity is for when people fall on hard times through no fault of their own.

    :awaits flaming:

I’ve sometimes pondered a similar question, but may I respectfully request that we keep that to another thread?

It would be great to keep the nuances of H4H fundraising to be kept separate from this open ended and very emotive subject.

Certainly didn’t intend my reply as a one-up, apologies if it came across that way

Not my boys, can’t take credit for the fact they’re more rad than the average STW’er 😉

I thought I’d be providing an alternative view as I felt most posters were suggesting that 18 months was too early.

My nephews got theirs for their 1st birthday. Of course they could barely walk then but always had them and were on them pretty much as soon as they could walk. By 2 they were little rippers, doing skinnies and hucks*

All kids develop different and this was in a bike crazy house but still v impressive to see!

    *No exaggeration ??

Heatsinks in the UK, at this time of year are almost certainly completely pointless. And they rattle.

Just use the new pads without the heatsinks til next summer.
