Anyway, I would steer away from feeding-related gifts

Agreed, feeding is a very personal choice and can be very emotive for some if it can’t/won’t work or you they are being made to feel that their choice is wrong.

Frozen meals have been suggested lots, I hope you know whether they have a large freezer or not!

Sleep related gifts might be a good shout. We made do with neither a Ewan the Sheep (we got a white noise app for  a spare phone) nor a SleepyHead type thing, buy have heard good/ok things about both. The issue is that they can seem like a lot of money to gamble for tight-fisted new parents!

Small, practical gifts, maybe a couple of pairs of sock-ons or mocc style slippers?

A card book? The Emma Dodd ones are very sweet, as is Ten Little Fingers or – a current favourite for our 16-month old.

    ir_bandito to the thread…

For a few years we did a big loop round Cow Green, High Cup etc. starting from Garragill as a Midsummer evening ride (typically summitting Cross Fell around midnight, finishing by 2 am the back home for 3 on a school night…

    Good times.

    3. You assumed that the driver would slow down and negotiate the roundabout in a controlled and civilised manner. The driver assumed that his path would remain clear of hazards.

Likely only one of you will die if either of you get these assumptions badly wrong.

    Are any modular???

We have a MSR Hubba Hubba. It has its flaws (vents!)but has since been improved. Cosy, but has enough of a porch to cook in. Reasonable weight for a proper tent. If we want we add the footprint. If its wet and/or we have lots of gear, we add the gear shed (a big porch).

For campsite camping we have a LWB T5 though..

As much as I would have suggested the Trail Boss (I have a tough/fast one you could borrow, I used to pair it with a Vigilante up front) it doesn’t corner anywhere as well as a Minion. Now I’ve gone to Minions for 3-season riding, I can’t switch back to my Trail Boss on the rear.

My better half is 5″0″ and rides an XS Pivot Mach 5.7. Fab bike, might be able to pick one up for reasonable money these days, too. No way we’re parting with our though!

scree switchback descent off Skiddaw rather than the straight traverse

would that be the one marked as FP rather than a track? I’ve never really even noticed a second path… I think I’ve been taking the track all along.

We had a leaky van make a mess of a concrete driveway on a rental property. A mix of washing up liquid, elbow grease, hot water and a power washer did the trick.

I have a few times taken my CX out on MTB trails. Liek the Sutton Bank red trail. for 90% of the trail it was absolutely fine, when it got steep and rocky, I very quickly missed the MTB!

90% of my riding is very much MTB/Enduro bike territory, if I gave up the MTB I’d might as well give up bikes altogether.

    YMMV :-)

Whereabouts are you? I have a Vigilante/Trail Boss, Tough, Grip/Fast pair that I want rid of. Fairly worn but might be good for a test. North East.

p.s. I ran them at the Ard rock a couple of years ago. Perfect tyre for that.

    p.p.s. hopefiendboy – try Planet X. I think I paid £25 a tyre for them. (a while ago)

If you’re serious about reducing the number of bikes in your fleet, then you can cover all your bases by combining

    Summer road bike

    Winter road bike

    CX bike

in to two, instead of culling the MTB!

now that my CX has been stolen, I am being told I need to pare down

    What, why?

    something has to give,

    Seriously, why?

Surely if a bike has been nicked you get to buy a new one… and you’ll miss rides and opportunities when the MTB is gone. Maybe if it’s a bit XC you should sell it and buy an enduro bike instead.

I’d seen the e13 kit and drive train on the Jeffsy, wouldn’t stop me from buying one. I think the e13 is not compatible with SRAM, and does that put people off?

We love Cragside, it’s an absolute marvel.

    Beaches.

Hadrian’s Wall would fit the fill being more inland, some nice loops to walk around there (what ^ says). Also walk along the Tyne around Corbridge.

What’s wrong with the 2018 drivetrain for those out of the loop?

What’s going to go there now? Can you hide it with something purposeful like a coir mat, a rug, a wire shelf for something?

Many of them you’ll get to ride trails that otherwise aren’t open to the public. Ard Rock. PMBA Lakes/Graythwaite.

I run shimano brakes – given my experiences with them and their price new, I wouldn’t buy second hand.

FWIW, Zees are a completely different brake to BB7s. Why the big change? My gnarliest bike is running Deore – they’re great and have lasted as long or longer than the XTs before.

As much as I’m affected by the MTB scene romance of a truck… you know, carpet over the tailgate, and sling your bike over the back for another shuttle to the top… but this is the UK so you’ll likely never need the 4WD, your kit in the back will be wet and your bikes are going to get nicked quicker than you can do 0-60.

I bought a Panaracer kit that was essentially using cut up iner tube material to create plugs. It didn’t hold as well as the Weldtite anchovies.

Never heard anyone call them dog turds though, last thing you want on a tyre. :vom:

Sometimes when building a wheel from scratch I’ll borrow a wheel stand from a friend, but mostly I’ll just do it in the frame or fork with cable ties.

    What whiteston said.

I’ll normally top up when changing tyres, which is only before a decent race (i.e. either very muddy or very long & dry). Otherwise my minions stay on year round and they get a shake every now and then.

I’ve had freeriders and Traicross (terrex Protect whatchamacallit), both fit best in 8.5 for me. The Adidas is ever so slightly smaller on the toes, so I could wear the freeriders in 8 but not the trailcross.

I haven’t read all the replies, just most of them…

I leave my snow chains in the van year-round for this reason. I also have plenty of towels, cloths or even ikea blankets that’s I’d sacrifice for snow/mud traction.

Commuter always has mudguards on, why on earth do I want to arrive at work in wet kit if I can possibly avoid it?

MTB has at the very least a Marsh Guard, though I’m probably going to leave the Mudhugger/Rock Guardz on til August as it’s so effective and not massively ugly.

We had one as a camper and bike wagon in NZ for the last year before we came back. cracking fun, not great on the highway but then neither is our T5 camper now. I might dig out a few photos when I get home for you…

Probably just weld spatter (XC717 is welded not pinned) – there’s no harm in cleaning it off, especially if it’s on the braking surface.

More accurate help would benefit from a photo though.

My old style Deore calipers weren’t threaded.

Buy a cheap set of taps and you’re sorted. They come in useful to cleaning out stiff threaded holes and all sorts.

I stayed in an Air BnB in Hayfield. The owner was a lovey chap and took the time to discuss route options for us and left us some OS maps. Didn’t visit the pub but did buy a newspaper and some wet logs from the newsagent.

The local were very odd though.

it seems to hold pressure and there is no fluid coming out, even with a hard squeeze

That’s thanks to the nature of the open system, ti doesn’t mean that the cap is sealing properly.
