    Is it just me that thinks those forks are utter minging…?

    You can also use WhatsApp to share your location, if you use that for messaging. I use the Strava Beacon thing, which can be temperamental, as there have been plenty of times I sent my wife the link and she’s not been able to view where I am.

    @lunge yes, but I need to fit a BB at 35 – 50 Nm and the cassette and rotor lock rings at 40 Nm. As per the other thread, these will have to be adjusted down to account for antiseize or thread lock, but still way above the 24 Nm that things like the X-Tools one offer.

    So Norbar seem to have all the love then. They have rather a lot of options, what product range should I be looking at…? I prolly only need something that can do up to 50 Nm…

    Don’t allow copper grease / copaslip to come in contact with aluminium or magnesium.

    @paton
    so my new frame is aluminum, are you saying I should’ve bought Alumslip instead of Copaslip then…?

    No riding and no new bike building either. Turns out the Topeak BB tool thingie I bought doesn’t fit a Shimano SM-BBR60 and I bought the wrong length of cranks. So I stripped my old racer, thinking I may be able to salvage a few parts, everything went in the bin, apart from the pedals, saddle and drop bars. Then I stripped the Calibre Dune, a year of riding 4,000 KM in all weather hasn’t been kind to various bits, some may be salvageable, if I can find a new fat bike frame.

    Temperature wise, I had two jumpers on and my hands were cold by the time I finished in the dark.

    That’s for all the comments. I would have thought you wanted anti-seize on anything that would get clarty, like cassette and rotor lock nuts, and brake retaining bolts, but you’re all saying thread-lock. Does that mean thread-lock is also anti-seize?

    The bottom bracket looks like it’s pre-treated with something, as it’s also a new frame, that’s supposed to be fine to just whang in. Does anyone clean that stuff off and slather in anti-seize? I only ask, as I’ve got an old racer that no-one can get a seized bottom bracket out of, and I’d rather that didn’t happen again.

    Are all copper anti-seize brands equal…? I.e. I can get 100g of Copaslip for £7, but 500g of Comma Copper Ease for £8.65?

    @nicko74 frame is aluminum, forks are full carbon, cranks are whatever Shimano GRX are made from.

    I was going to use the carbon grip paste on the top cap bung and the stem, as the steerer tube is carbon. Other than that, everything was just going to get slathered in whatever’s in the B’Twin teflon grease tube I bought a while back.

    So it looks like I should also buy some antiseize then. Any recommendations…?

    @K I’ve got the Wing 12, but haven’t fitted them to the new frame yet.

    +1 for Lake shoes. I’ve got the MX 237 ENDURANCE WIDE and they’re brilliant, flipping expensive, but brilliant. Can’t remember who I bought them from, somewhere in Germany, as no-one in the UK stocked that model in the wide fit.

    I was going to ask a similar question, as I’ve been using the OKO Off Road Tyre Sealant in the Jumbo Jims on the fattie. I’m unsure if I want to use it with the new gravel bike, so I was going to try the Joe’s No Flats Eco Sealant, as my new wheels have warnings about using sealant with stuff like ammonium in them. But then I thought I’ve just bought Conti tyres, so I’m going to try the Continental RevoSealant instead. No idea if either of them are any good though…

    Frameset turned up yesterday, which is nice. Looks like cable mounting is via those little plastic clip thingies. What are the clips called…? Cable clips or hose clips doesn’t turn anything up? It’s those or cable ties, which I have plenty of.

    Is there a downside to using cable ties? At least they don’t fall off and get lost…

    So my wheels and tyres arrived yesterday, very fancy. I got one out the packaging this morning and shoved the direct mount rotor on to see what it would look like. And it looks like I need another tool…?

    The lock nut thing in the DT Swiss direct mount to 6 point adapter looks like it requires something similar to a BB cup tool. While the Shimano lock nut thing that came with the rotors looks like it requires some sort of cassette lock nut tool? I’m assuming I can run either lock nut on these rotors, or should I stick with the one that came with them?

    +1 for the Calibre Dune, mine was running 4.8″ Jumbo Jims. They were fine in all but the most clarty situations. My frame cracked round the seat tube though, so YMMV…

    That black thing with the slight cut out is the crown race, I was thinking of a ball race! 🤬 idiot… To be fair to myself though, I’ve never has a headset that didn’t have exposed ball races. 🤷‍♂️

    Are you *sure* the clown race comes with the headset?

    Er, no…‽ I thought the headset came with everything you needed…?

    I don’t have a turbo anymore. Bought a Tacx iMagic back in the day and used it about five times. I’d rather ride in the mud/wet/cold/snow/dark than on a turbo. I should check and see if the chap I gave it to still has is sitting in a corner of his garage unused…

    Thanks all. I have just ordered all the parts. Slightly pants wetting as the wheelset and tyres on their own, were more than I paid for my Calibre Dune. 😨

    Yes, the only thing now missing from my list are bottle cages , will have to have a look and see what will go with the frame. Now I just need to find someone local who can lend me a workshop stand for a weekend.

    @whitestone hadn’t even considered I’d have to cut a carbon steerer… I’ll add a BB tool and cutters to the list.

    @thepurist
    yes, I emailed and asked if the groupset contained all the hoses etc. I have a big torque wrench for fitting square taper BB’s, plus a 5Nm Topeak Nano Torqbox for seat posts and what not. Will add carbon paste to the list.

    @snotrag thanks!

    @tomhoward
    flat mount and centre lock, so I think I’ve got the right ones.

    @frogstomp
    caliper adapters…? You mean for post mount on a flat mount frame…?

    Can’t help, but I’m about to get some Continental Terra Trail in 700c x 40mm. They supposedly have a tubeless ready ProTection casing, hopefully they’ll last longer than a couple of months.

    @thisisnotaspoon yeah, but they don’t have that fancy vibration damping thingie in them… 🤷‍♂️

    I just wish @steve_b77 hadn’t mentioned DT Swiss wheels, as Bike Discount have the GR 1600 Spline® 25 wheels for four hundred notes. Looking at my spreadsheet and my bank account, I can afford those if I don’t buy a new saddle.

    I used CRC as a baseline last night when pricing up individually. You can see why I’d rather buy a “complete” groupset (doesn’t include BB or rotors):

    Shimano GRX 810 Left Hand Brake only CRC £ 169.99
    Shimano GRX 810 11 Speed Shifter                   CRC    £ 185.99
    Shimano GRX 810 Brake Caliper (front & rear) CRC £ 109.98
    Shimano GRX 810 1x11 Speed Chainset                CRC    £ 177.00
    Shimano GRX 812 1x11 Shadow+ Rear Derailleur       CRC    £  84.99
    Shimano XT M8000 11 Speed 11-42t Cassette          CRC    £  59.99
    Shimano Ultegra 6800-XT M8000 HG701 QLink Chain    CRC    £  19.99
                                                      Total   £ 807.93

    GRX groupset - Bike Components (inc postage) £ 760.00 (approx)
    GRX groupset - Vanilla Bikes (postage?) £ 749.99

    @mtb-rob
    I was planning on 42T, only as they don’t come with anything larger, I do live in south Cambridgeshire, where the lumpy terrain is legendary… If I could afford it, I would’ve got this new Hope RX chainset, with a 44T oval direct mount ring, but I can’t, so wont.

    @roverpig
    I did think about spec’ing that lever with the new Pro Discover dropper, but funds just wont allow it.

    @steve_b77 I could probably afford the DT Swiss GR 1600 SPLINE 25, but then something else in the build would have to give to allow for the extra £100 or so. I could wait until the new year for the fancy Spank Vibrocore drop bars and Ergon saddle, which would mean I could afford them. Decisions, decisions…

    @thisisnotaspoon
    I did look at trying to getting Spank Flare Vibrocore rims, Hope hubs, and then getting them built locally, but the cost was ridiculous.

    @mister-p I’m after 1x, so doubles are no use. As for LBS, the one I used shut and I haven’t found a replacement that I’m happy with.

    @BoardinBob
    that looks like just the ticket, obviously my duckduckgo-fu is weak…

    @roverpig
    I don’t think so, the ST-RX810-LA dropper brake isn’t mentioned on all the group set pages I’ve seen so far.

    @thisisnotaspoon what size of fattie frame…? I one to replace my cracked Dune frame.

    Well, in a rather unsuspected turn of events, I’m only £355 away from being able to afford a Mason Bokeh GRX. 😲

    Since that’s what lots pf people were telling me to buy in other in my other threads, I may as well save up the rest. So, given the bike fit details above, what size of Bokeh frame should I get…? I’m assuming a 54m medium.

    So just tried to measure myself (with help) and I’m evidently taller than I think. So, height of 174cm, arm span of 177cm, resulting in an ape index of 1.02.

    k1100t

    Aye, the Bokeh has always been just outside my price range. Having said that, depending on what HMRC send me, my budget in the New Year maybe around £3.3k, so it’s not totally out of the question.

    k1100t

    In a twist of fate, (🤬 HMRC!) I now have a budget of around £2.5k for an Aero Gravel Speed Machine; more if I want to wait till the New Year. With that kind of budget, I’m now torn between building something like the RAG+, or just buying an off the shelf bike like the Rondo Ruut CF2.

    How do you move from a pipe dream to reality…?

    k1100t

    CRC have the NS Bikes RAG+ 1 on clearance at £1199.99, down from £1,599.

    You want Lake’s, all day, every day… Either 2xx or 4xx series, as they’re wider than the 3xx series. Check the sizing chart, then look at the Wide fit, or Extra Wide fit, if the standard ones aren’t enough. You can buy off the Lake website and they’re shipped from the European warehouse, or you have to get your DuckDuckGo-fu out…

    I’ve got CX 237 Wide and MX 237 Endurance Wide and have no complaints. To the point where I’ll never buy another brand of cycling shoes. My feet are wider than a wide thing, SIDI, Shimano, Mavic et al’s wide fit is laughably anything but.

    The Expanse books are better than the TV show by a country mile, but that’s not saying much. Buck Rogers is a stone cold classic, season one is better than season two though; and yes, when I watched it as a tween, I fell for Erin Gray hard.

    @funkmasterp the frameset is black, I was considering orange (or maybe purple) and my bling colour.

    @joemmo
    I can see your point, but it’s just an exercise in what if at the moment, and will most likely come to nothing. I do have things like the new Spank vibrocore drop bars on the shopping list, so there’s a fair few decent parts selected, this is just about the magic pixie dust.

    I was thinking of hubs, floating rotor bits and brake callipers, with headset top cap, spacers, seat clamp, and bottom bracket as other bits. Debating if the new RX Crank is a step too far…
