Now with Lyriks and less gaudy brake hoses.

I'm somewhere between world-class mountain biker Mike Kinrade:

… and ex-MotoGP rider Jose Luis Cardoso – pity I'm so rubbish on two wheels.

Agreed – that's the third attempt at outdoor time lapse. Ended up with a tube of clear polythene, the flower head tied to 3 stakes and the camera shooting down from a height of about 2m. It's not easy! Having a lot more success with my indoor projects (currently shooting some runner beans sprouting).

Yep, install EOS Utility (download from Canon if you don't already have it). Set it up for remote shooting, then you can use the builtin time-lapse shooting in the software.

I used to use a similar setup (an early example is here).

That sucks. Only knocked myself out once. Came off a very small jump at the wrong angle, went over the bars and binked my head. Not fun at all. Felt separated from reality for a few days, but no long term damage (not sure how you'd actually notice though!). I've had plenty of worse crashes (including ones where I've hit my head harder), so I'm not sure if it's the angle or type of impact that's important.

Take it easy for a few days.

Ermmm… OK (with apologies to stooo for the thread hijack).

    Ingredients

1 camera capable of high speed shooting[/*]

1 copy of Photoshop CS3 or above[/*]
Recipe

Pick a good vantage point through which the rider will do something interesting[/*]

As the rider enters frame, start machine gunning with the high speed shutter release, don't move the camera[/*]

Pick 3 or 4 of the best images in the sequence, make sure there is good separation between the rider position in each frame[/*]

Load all the images into Photoshop, each image should be a separate layer[/*]

Use Photoshop's align layers tool to compensate for small camera movements[/*]

Add a mask to all the layers and manually mask around the rider revealing the underlying frames[/*]
I shoot with a Canon 7D, so I can fire off shots at 8 frames per second. The two examples above were done with my 30D which will do about 5 fps.

@Burts – I already had the Lyriks on my Bullit (which was subsequently transformed into a DH bike), so I didn't pay to upgrade 20mm of travel. Having said that I do find the Lyrik to be a much nicer fork. Slightly more relaxed angles and really smooth coil sprung travel – nice.

It has been changed a bit since the pic was taken (Lyrik forks, Tech M4 brakes).

Go to podiobooks.com and get a copy of "In Search of Number 6" by Damon Timm. Funny, entertaining, free to download and it has got bikes in it.

I use a Merkur something-or-other (discontinued older DE razor). I'll echo what Adders69 says – you can't rush with one of these. If you typically spend 2-3 minutes shaving with a Mach 3 you'll probably find you need about 10 minutes with a DE razor. Once you get the hang of it you can adjust the blade to be a bit closer and get a really smooth shave.

My main tip is to not bother with a fancy razor stand, instead store your razor head down in a pot of oil (baby oil is about right). This will make the blades last a lot longer (prevents micro-rust).

I use Tracklogs under VMWare Fusion – works for me.

As for Mac specific programs, there's the HikeTech stuff which is basic GPS download and scanned maps. There's also RouteBuddy which has proper OS mapping, but it seems expensive and I wasn't impressed with the tool available for route planning.

I use a Vista HCx and there is a noticeable improvement in GPS reception compared to the standard eTrex Legend I used to use.

Also – I just looked at your Vimeo video and it looks about right for VIO POV footage. You might get a marginal improvement by modifying the output settings in iMovie (bit rate, compression level or similar).

As a comparison, I get very similar looking results from my setup (VIO POV, Final Cut Express, Perian): here

The problem with these solid-state cameras is that the video footage is very fragile. By that I mean it is heavily compressed and quickly falls apart when you start editing. I imagine the problem is exacerbated when using the newer HD models of these cameras – most of them still seem to be using about the same bandwidth to record their footage (note: this is purely from what I have read; I have no hands-on experience with the new HD cameras).

As far as I know, there are no cheap solutions that produce robust video footage that can withstand any serious editing. The only solutions I know are DV tape (delicate, quite pricey) or high-end solid state (very pricey).

Not sure about iMovie, but I use Perian to make Final Cut compatible with the VIO POV files.

In the winter I run a 2.5" WTB Weirwolf up front and a 2.3" Nokian Gazzalodi on the rear. It gives a good combination of traction out of gloopy mud and front end grip on the corners.

In the summer I just run a pair of 2.25" Intense System-4 tyres.

I used to use a HAWG for my Canon SLR. I recently changed to a Dakine Apex and found that although the listed capacity is about the same it's a much better bag for bulky items.

I've had good service from Alpine Bikes on Holburn Street and EBC on George Street.

As for trails I recommend you check out the Ecurie Neep website.

@Lummox: I can’t be sure but I very much doubt they will fit the older levers. The tech lever bolts are 90deg different from the older mini lever bolts.
