I took mine in two weeks ago for the samw reason to a store who do offer the inspection service. I didn’t do it officially i just stripped the bike and chainset down myself and took that in and they said all visually looked well and there was no need to take any further action. Unfortunately with this type of recall they aren’t replacing unless there are definite signs of debonding. Its frustrating and i assume your question is to find a retailer who will send the chainset in without question in the hope it will get a replacement by madison.

I managed to get down to Derby Velodrome about an hour before the start, it was nice to see all the teams presented on a beautiful morning. It looked a healthy turnout with  crowd but not overkill probably because it was a weekday.

There was a lot of people fighting to get a look at Evenpoel, climbing through trees etc like paparazzi. I took a steady ride behind the lotto soudal crew as they rode up to be presented, Remco was on a nice Gold Specialized but i want one of the trinity specialized bikes which were very bright.

Nice green cycling caps and flags handed out, the last one i got was at the tour de france leeds when the wagon drove past near the start of the opening stage. Its nice the event managed to go ahead and bring some good vibes to all the cyclists and wider public. There is still a long way to go for cycling in the UK but this was a positive event fron what i could see with some excitement for tbe occasion.

Nice party vibes on the video. I am sure once these riders take off tomorrow as usual via elvaston castle they will light it up through Risley and romp up no mans and the lesser climb as they leave Dale Abbey. I think cloves hill would have slowed them a little more but for these guys it’s meat & drink. I may try and get down for the warm ups and bit before the start, depending hiw early it starts. I’ve seen the start time but it doesn’t detail how much earlier it’s advisable to go down. I remembered wiggins doing the depart when he was tdf champion and that was crazy busy tho i didn’t make it down early enough back in 2012

Its nice to see it back through Derbyshire, the forecast is very good for Friday, i may go down to no mans lane towards Dale Abbey to see the riders come through. It will be a blink and you miss it affair, i usually go when its in East Leake and over near Ilkeston a couple of year back too.

Tempted to go the velodrome but i guess it will be pretty busy there, maybe not as busy as when i went to Leeds city centre for the tour de france opening stage start. Is there usually much to see at a start, the riders sign on? Or is that just grand tours haha.

Cheers, its extra confusing as Vittoria do a folding tubeless version at 120tpi but also a TNT version which is apparently the better version, the TNT version seems to have been out longer and is expensive still whereas the tubeless version I’m sure is stil a nice tire is on offer it seems. The merlin version is tubeless, but not the TNT i think, maybe someone has purchased and can confirm thanks.

Some good options here, does anyone know which version terreno dry the banana industries are selling, it just says Folding but there is a TNT version with 120tpi which i see Merlin are also doing? The terra trail look good too but if you can run a 45 as mentioned. Some crazy colour options from Panaracer too haha.

I have tried both firmwares on the pinnacle app but when using it with indie velo i am getting no difference in gears and still need to move through the gears a lot wjen the gradient on tbe course changes.

I compared the readings from the power on my chainset (4iii) real-time while riding and the 4iii was showing about 10% higher power reading ish. I am thinking of trying another type of trainer program as i am thinking the software in the program itself converts the power readings with its own software.

How did they come to merge(crc/wiggle) i was buying from both beforehand, probably CRC more to be honest as i was initially more of an mtb rider. Were both retailers bought out and then merged? I did remember thinking at the time, they are a real juggernaut and going to have a stranglehold on the market which i guess they did have for a good while and the situation we are now in was unthinkable then. I have used many other retailers too but they are my favourite for sure having such a wide range of choice and some good home brands for spares and bits and bobs always competitively priced. Free delivery was always a bonus too but that nudged up onto a minimum spend and over the years.

I have a jamis highpoint i am looking at getting a dropper post for? It says seatpost measure 31.6 x 400. I can see the only size in the brand x is a 30.9 now. Can these be used with shims? Also is there a big advantage over the Internal routing. I guess an external one would be like running another disc brake cable from outside the bike along the frame so not as nice amd yoi have the bulk of another cable running ay the side of the frame?

Would boost 29 forks work OK with a non boost (15×100) thru axle wheeled bike?

I have seen you can buy adapters for many types of fitting and was considering this as an option as the forks on it are very low quality coil and very weighty.

I thought the rapide were sold out now or are you looking at a full suss rig? I was looking at the sizes and thought u would go large, also 180. They are less aggressive than the vitus so be less sit up and ride position wise.

It was an amazing bargain for those that went for one but you have summed up exactly why I didn’t pull the trigger on it. I’ve been running mainly 26 late 90s hardtails and got a newer style 27.5 bike a couple of years ago and it was overkill for any of the terrain near me in the east Midlands. I prefer an older lower 26 for more gravel and general use. All the mountain bikes now are very much set up for mountains why I cannot get near. The best place is somewhere like sherwood pines or cannock chase but I prefer to ride out from home. The faster hardtail like the rapide looked more suitable for the local terrain here but never got down to those lows for the nicer forked version unfortunately but was still a bargain at £400 for the other version. I picked up a Jamis highpoint a2 cheap also which was another factor but obviously the vitus deals were much better value.

Are these similar quality to the topeak mini 20 Pro ones on wiggle about a year ago, they were about £7 I think which was impressive.

I always find shimano small in sizing, but then with Northwave I also got some and they were slightly small so you may be ok. It says a 45 is 11 doesn’t it but for me 45 in northwave felt more like a 10 but then a shimano 45 is a 10.

My old trek us postal replica had them had them as standard, some bulletproof bontrager which are still ready to use now. I preferred them over winter to be honest when it was bad terrain roadside etc and found it better when having to get off the bike for any reason. Better weather I do prefer the road type on my other bike but I do like the dual sided spd over winter mainly for that reason. On the bike they felt fine too.

I can believe the shimano and sram ranges last 5 mins in 8 speed on their mid range. I switched to kmc x8 and its lasted far better like twice as long, an 8 speed shimano lasted a few months then was stretched beyond as was a standard kmc 8, the x version was fantastic. My 11 spd 105 was corroded after about 3 rides the other winter, very disappointed with the shimano metals. Same with the brake calipers, a handful of rides and one of the caliper bolts had dissolved on 105. Used a 5500 series caliper for about 8 years and no sign of corrosion. There’s no doubt the metals are inferior now. As for this chainset, mine still looks new although it’s only done about 3000 miles on dry clean weather.

This was an amazing buy for £90 odd and would be respectable at the £200 mark still but that business about them trying to charge you £20 sums up where we are with buying instore. I don’t blame you. I understand why they tried to charge the £20 a so guess online it was £230 but it would feel wrong to pay it to me instore.

With 10 & 11 many were using the both and I remember the tiagra 4700 was recommended by many on a 9 speed set up. I haven’t used the 12 speed kit yet, I’m still pretty happy with the 11 speed set up. Is it a slightly thinner chain again. I always find my 8 speed chain lasts a lot longer than the thinner higher speed versions like 10/11. 9 is also good.

I stripped my ultegra chainset down and decided against taking it in as it looks fine, will keep an eye on it once I start using again that is.

I have just gone back to the app with the aim of trying to download the firmware that smooths the effort level to avoid all the gear shifting. I cannot login for some reason and it has no option to recover password etc. Just seems to be locked out, has anyone else had this issue? I had looked at setting another account up but it doesn’t seem right that the app is not letting me in? I am sure I requested to keep logged in also but haven’t used this app for a few weeks now.

Loving the retro style paints on the canyon grizl but not loving the £3500k price tag. Seems a lot of dollar for an OK gravel bike :)

I’ve just took my chainset off and removed the chainrings after seeing the pics on here over the weekend as they looked very bad. Mine looks to have no issues like that at all. All the joints look perfect still and all in order. I’m cleaning it down while it’s off and will check the examination vids again but it looks unlikely it is worth me booking this in as it still looks fine so would not fail an inspection.

Yes, cheers for the info. I am in the same boat with the crank being on a summer bike so not an urgent concern but I will get them checked out before using. I can see from the pics how easy it would be to miss with a look from a distance in the wrong light. Good that you spotted this an hope the new crank soon. There are lot of 105 compact cranks new around cheap I have noticed but I bet you want to keep it matching, I had considered a 105 but they are black and the ultegra are grey also. The newer ultegra looks very similar to the 105 infact but with the grey finish. The only way as you mentioned to properly inspect judging by those images is to remove the chainrings as you mentioned which I haven’t done as yet (the bike is moth balled currently)

Yes I have heard some are hard to spot for the signs of debonding and being close to potential failure. Is the uptake for this recall high, I understand it’s voluntary if there looks to be an issue which once again is not clear cut.

I’ll give it a proper inspection before using again. You mention chainring removal also, is that to see the join behind, it is difficult while it’s still on I remember when trying to inspect mine. I am not happy with the recall situation like many others as its a bit of a halfway house. They may pass an inspection then in a few months deteriorate. I watched a few of the videos regarding  how to inspect them. I don’t think this is the end of it regards the warranty situation. There is a lawsuit out and possibly things may change yet again based on the outcome of things. I have lost confidence in the product to be honest a little bit.

Sounds a big mess. It’s not ideal either putting non matching series rings and chainsets on your original series 6800 bike. I haven’t even booked my chainset in as it still looks fine. Have to wait and see if there is any change in policy but if you are in limbo it sounds like they are unprepared for the demand needed. The scaremongering from those unaffected will no doubt have driven demand for changing also. It’s a very strange situation considering how long these were in production. It was a long long time and 2.7 million odd wasn’t it?

Cheers for the information. Yes, i know tiagra and grx are officially the only ones what work with each other via shimanos information but as they run on the same pull ratio then it should be fine? I see the 812 mech is rated as 42t max but I read that it works with a 46t. Is that with b screw adjustment or just as is. Sounds like a good potential build there as mentioned. What are you thinking for chainset, a 40-42 single ring chainset up top. The mech is £69 which sounds a lot still to me for a mech. Is that slightly reduced price too. I could always sell the grx400 mech I guess and put towards the 812.

Does the GRX 812 work properly with the grx 10 speed shifters? I was looking at switching from a double 10 speed to that but would mean switching derallieur and I might get another chainset for single ring?

    jwildcard

Good buy if you can accommodate the lower gearing. I was looking at converting a grx 400 to a single ring set up using one of these cassettes and single ring chainset but it looks hard work? With grx 400 shifters it says you need a tiagra or the existing grx and it’s a b screw job too far maybe, 42 be possible I hear with a grx400 mech. Hmmm sram wins I this regard but I prefer shimano usually.

The ragley trig is a solid frame and as you will know steel. Only the forks carbon so you will be fine there. Not as light as alu but will be a nicer ride. I still ride older cromo mtb over lighter alu offerings as I like the dampening. Carbon of course nice also but then more delicate if really tough handling and touring etc.

Thanks for the advice, I have got it running again fine but everytime i go back to the bike it seems it doesn’t engage initially when trying to shift? I will try and get a look inside but I think they are sealed aren’t they and give it some gt85. Something not engaging which yes could be stuck. And releases after using and shifting up the gears.

I’ve looked around the websites for some info but no luck? They only say 65psi on the walls? They are foldable, would they have done a folding non tubeless version then? Maybe older stock? Yes the maxxis logo is in white but not much info at all like the compound either?

My maxxis rekon race 29 x 2.25 have turned up. Does anyone know the specs for what I assume is an OEM version, just says 65psi. Wondering what the tpi is and are they tubeless ready etc?

    jwildcard

Yes. Easily decent value as was a lot more when released with a high grade spec and decent frame. Not many better steel rigs around the £1k mark and a lot of options with this bike.

I initially tried mywoosh with an i5 laptop which was borderline on the specs needed, not working very well with issues with power reading and I just think it was struggling to run it. I’ve heard people have more success from their phones unless you have a pretty high spec recent pc.

I then tried indievelo and it worked really well. The gradients felt very realistic and I had to go through nearly every gear at some point on the base camp training loop ride. Power was reading better though maybe rim underpowered currently haha.

I can see on the pinnacle firmware there is the two versions as discussed and as I have just read on a post sometimes the software dictates that also depending on which program you are using with this trainer.

If mywhoosh come down in the specs required I may give it a shot again but didn’t really want to use mobile, prefer to use pc/laptop.

<li style=”text-align: left;”>Yes these are a very well built steel gravel bike. The geometry is nice and well balanced as you say for a mix of duties and has everything you would look for in a decent gravel bike. It comes with a double so more range for road use but can easily be converted to single ring. As you would expect it comes in a bit weighty due to the steel frame but this is rewarded back with the nice ride quality and the stronger frame giving more versatility and peace of mind if touring etc. Good spec for the price and for the £1k mark is hard to beat I would say this year. There’s a lot of bargains in this bike category but not with 525steel frame and grx groupset, certainly the sub £1k range.

Having used this trainer on mywhoosh I am looking at updating / changing the firmware. Any suggestions as to which version to out on, the smooth or the gradient. The power readout seems lower than when I was using a power meter, maybe it’s how the unit works? I heard it was pretty accurate, about +/- 2.5% potentially.

Raleigh did some really cool mountain bikes back in the 90s before they were all imported. Yes the Raleigh bikes thing is unbelievable how you can be one of the most prestigious in the world to just die how they did back in the late 90s. Unbelievable for such a well built established Brand that had kudos overseas. Worth a watch of the history of Raleigh cycling documentary to see how great they once were which I’m sure a lot of us know already of course.

Sounds like it’s a very nice set up and with the better components you have it will be even nicer. I see the one for £849 has even better forks but it’s all extra money.

I have seen some mega low prices on the slightly lower spec versions but as you mention they don’t have the bolt thru rear axle which I would rather have along with slightly nicer forks but it’s balancing the price up. The Nukeproof scout definitely looks very nice and I know the Ragleys are decent rigs too. I am hoping the droppers come down in price, I saw there was the rsp version going for about £30 a couple of months ago but they all sold out I think in the 31.6 size. Not the best version but sounded good value. The brand x one is reduced I think isn’t it with a 100mm drop. Not sure whether I would need more than 100mm, am 6 foot and will be riding a large frame?

Hi. When you say app, do you mean the app zwift itself or the pinnacle trainer? I have just set it up and ran it  With the firmware are you talking about the pinnacle trainer firmware or zwift. I have hooked mine up to mywoosh but the wattage looks a lot lower than it used to when I last used a trainer with zwift. I guess I could try it with zwift also and see what the watt readings are?

It looks nice, is there much difference between these and a lot of the hardtails I’m seeing around the £500-600 mark regards the geometry and aimed usage. I see this is a bit lighter too with slightly shorter fork travel which makes sense for more xc use. I know some of the hardtails I’ve seen like the ragley people are building up on here you can see a difference in the geometry. I am keen to try a 29er having been on 26 over the years. I did try a 27.5 briefly but the geometry on the one I tried had a steep front head tube and I didn’t like how high it was, wanted something slightly lower.
