There is a lady in my work who insists that her house is haunted because a pint glass in her kitchen spontaneously shattered. I explained to her that it is a common and know phenomenon for toughened or tempered glass to spontaneously shatter, but she wasn’t convinced.

Some people are determined to find a supernatural explanation and will ignore rational alternatives. No wonder there are so many charlatans making bucket loads of cash.

Lots of road bikes have quite tall head tubes these days so you wouldn’t be as crouched over, but the drops give the option of getting low if you want. CX bike might be worth considering as a compromise.

It can be very difficult, a lot of people tend to formulate an opinion and then look for evidence to support their conclusion. There has been lots of research on confirmation bias and how people will overlook evidence that contradicts their opinions. I’ve not bothered to look for the evidence not supporting this phenomenon though :-)

There is a girl in our office who is exactly as you describe. Everything and anything is treated as an interesting anecdote that must be broadcast at maximum volume to the entire office. She also swears a lot at really inappropriate times and is constantly making veiled xenophobic/borderline racist comments.

She is business core though so there’s nothing that can be done :D

Same here. It takes ages to recover from injuries these days, which is making me more of a pussy when I ride, which probably just increases the likelihood of a crash.

Yes, I know its a criminal offence, but so is killing burglars, and i’d have no problem with doing that if I felt my family were in danger.

I’m sure all the militant dog lovers will hate this but if you don’t like it, learn to control your dog properly, and keep it away from other peoples small kids.

I agree that people should be in full control of their dogs at all times. Saying that people have different perceptions of what is dangerous. You may interpret a dog as a threat when it isn’t, through basic ignorance. Your actions may even exacerbate the situation, say for example if you kicked the dog of someone a bit handy and not afraid to dish out some physical retribution.

I’m looking to learn more about ArcGIS to improve my prospects of getting a job in our GIS department. I have experience working with spatial data in my degree – something that I enjoyed – but never with ArcGIS.

Are there any courses anyone could recommend or would it be best to do an MSc in a related discipline?

My Uncle worked for Haliburton in Saudi. On one of the few occasions he ventured off his compound he was assaulted with an iron bar. It didn’t put him off though.

I put water and coffee in and leave it on the lowest heat. When you smell the coffee/hear spluttering it’s done. Good for camping too.

I remember when I was about 6 or 7 I was playing in the garden while my dad was doing some work. Some guy was walking by with his dog which caught sight of me. It came bounding up barking it’s head off and started trying to nip at my heels.

I was pretty much frozen solid until my dad came over with a shovel and took a **** good swing at the thing. The dog was smart enough to run behind it’s owner who was running up our garden. The guy was going mental saying “He was only playing, he wasn’t going to hurt him!” and all that usual jazz.

So, Dog Owners (or rather Dog Owners Who Are ****), how do parents tell when a dog that is scaring your kid is just playing and when it is going to bite his face off?
