I’d forgotten my helmet as I was about to begin my descent. Must’ve looked a bit strange because I was wearing knee pads

    On your head?

No, but that wouldn’t have been a bad idea.

I went up Helvellyn last weekend only to realise I’d forgotten my helmet as I was about to begin my descent. Must’ve looked a bit strange because I was wearing knee pads.

It’s not what you’d call ‘flowy’, well certainly not for me anyway.

The Mrs and I have just bought a motorhome and it’s great, feels like cheating. Went Lakes last weekend and it was so nice to collapse on a real bed after my ride.

Just using your granny ring to slowly but surely haul yourself up climbs…don’t do this in front of Dirk though, he might spit on you as he majestically cruises past in the big ring

When were you around skiddaw? 3 of us were on the bridleway from Bassenthwaite past Dash falls on saturday, about 1pm ish. We only saw 2 other folks all day (who were, it has to be said, quicker than me!). Maybe it was you? Awesome day though. Lakes are great and definitely had better weather than most of the uk…
    POSTED 19 HOURS AGO # REPORT-POST

I was around Skiddaw on Saturday too and went past Dash Falls. I was on my own at first but met up with a couple who showed me a nice little route back to Keswick.

Q1. Have you heard of/visited Lee/Cragg Quarry Mountain Bike Trails?

Yes – I visit at least once a month.

Q2. Would extensions to and better linkages between the existing trails in Lee/Cragg Quarry and the bridleway network make you more likely to visit this area?

It would definitely make me more likely to explore the area outside the Quarries.

Q3. Would the provision of 10 way marked mountain bike routes starting from Lee Quarry mean you would consider extending the length of visit to the area?

    Absolutely.

Q4. Would linked activities eg art installations which act as “usable art” such as a shelter, on the mountain bike network encourage you to visit more often?

    No.

Q5. Do you think a “Trail Head” facility in Rossendale would make Lee/Cragg Quarry and bridleway network a more attractive facility? What other facilities would you like to see – toilets/showers/bike shop/café/please state any other

A trail head facility would make the trail network a lot more appealing. Toilets, bike wash, café, bike shop would make the location a lot more convenient.

From what I’ve read, the selectors are claiming that due to changes in scoring, the chap they’ve selected represents a better chance of winning a medal. It sounds very dubious when you consider their relative rankings and the fact that Aaron Cook has beaten many of his medal rivals this year, whereas the new chap has never beaten anyone in the top 10.

Feel sorry for the new fella, who is caught in the middle.

seeing people “winching” in granny gears annoys me more than pushers..

    What’s “winching”?

I’ve recently gone from Nobby Nics 2.25 to Panaracer CG 2.35, I’ve been liking the grip but not tried them in the mud yet. Think I’ll try a Panaracer on the front and a Nobby Nic on the back.

Cheers for that. So the same route as described here[/url] then?

The Lake District Essential Trails book suggests anti-clockwise but I’ve found some of the rides in the Peak version are often the opposite way from the norm.

Food education is important I think. It’s amazing how many people don’t understand what is good or bad for you and can’t cook a meal from scratch. Cheap convenience food is generally made tasy by adding lots of sugar, salt and fat.

It’s the old chestnut of how do you break the cycle? Parent/s with bad diet pass on the habits to their kids. I was fortunate that even though we were poor my Ma liked to cook, so I ate a varied diet and got interested/educated about food.

Giant Anthem on Paul’s Cycles for £899. Some of the components aren’t as good but the frame and suspension system are probably better and will hold value better if you decided to sell in the future.

I can’t wait, there’s something about International Football tournaments and the Euros can often be better than the World Cup due to the fewer number of teams competing.

Not bothered about England though, they’re just not very inspiring and I can’t see them improving under Hodgson. England’s problems run much deeper than who the manager is, how much ‘passion’ the players display or how fat their wage packets are. A serious re-assessment of how we coach youngsters needs to take place, shifting emphasis to developing skill and technique – even at the expense of winning. Small sided games for youth players, oh and I’d ban any parent who utters the words ‘hit him/have him/get in there’ or any other variant from the sidelines.

To be fair to the FA there does seem to be some will to re-write the coaching manual. Should have happened 20 years ago, better late than never I suppose.

Cheers for the suggestions, I will check them out, but definitely not Abergorlech carpark *cough*. We’ve managed to get in Sykeside (thanks edlong). Just need to decide where to ride now.

One person’s perfect shoe can be another’s nightmare. Echo above advice, get to a specialise running shop who will measure you, analyse your gait and present you with some suitable options.

Don’t choose based on colour, brand etc.

While people in other countries don’t mind a drink, in my experience we take it to a different level. European town centres are often a lot more relaxed and family orientated, whereas British town centres are pretty much taken over by pish heads – the difference in atmosphere is noticeable.

I keep wanting to hit the button on the CAAD10 but I’m a bit concerned it’ll be a bit too extreme for 5hr+ rides

    They’ll only take 4 hours on the CAAD10 🙂

I have just bought a road bike and had the same budget as you. I was looking at Planet X Pro Carbon with Rival, Giant Defy, CAAD10 and the Decathlon Btwin Facet 5. I went for the CAAD in the end, although geometry is slightly more agressive than the others. I had a CAAD9 that was stolen so knew the bike suited me and I got a good price on the 10. Just waiting for it to be delivered…can’t wait.

I went last summer and it was noticeably more expensive than previous visits. I wouldn’t expect it to be cheap because they are having economic problems.
