Where does the university stand on the use of the ‘double positive’ in forum discussions?

I got some original vans exacerbate spd shoes from halfords years ago: can they still get vans these days? New vans sticky+waffle bike shoes about to come out, you see….

Spock, there would be the usual argument about compression of a long length of spiral-wound wire outer versus the better sealing it affords. Sidestepped neatly by gore or goodridge cable sets which use the cable stops on your frame and seal the inbetweeny bits with a slim plastic hose, theoretically giving you the best of both worlds. Provided it is well installed. I can’t say my goodrige set has really made it that much better.

I have also heard on here (but never seen) that a rear mech snapped off and tangled in back wheel at speed will pull the bars round if it is connected by full outer.

And no i don’t think anyone makes a widget to put cable stops in. (though you can get thingys that do it the other way round. You could get them welded on if you are really that bothered. Personally on a bike with no cable stops I would go full nice quality outer with 1:1 cable pull shifting (ie sram or 10-speed shimano).

If you are all disky, you can get road versions of the very excellent avid bb7 which will work with your road levers. You might need a bit of bodging to get a rack around the back one and mudguard stays around the front one.

1″ tyres fit fine on 17mm internal diameter xc rims (like 717’s or 317’s).

But with disc mounts I would definitely go for proper touring 700c rims and skinnier tyres, they will fit fine in a mountain bike frame as there is a bit of mud clearance and biiig tyre clearance built in. Plenty of people race cyclocross on mountainbike frames with 700c rims and 28mm cx tyres in them.

Assuming your old frame doesn’t have disc mounts, you’ll have to put some adapters on to use rim brakes with 700c rims. like this

If it was me I would just get mavic xm317 rims built onto something basic and serviceable like deore. I have this on my work bike and they are cheap enough but robust and light-ish. And if you and your stuff are heavy, probably go for 1.5″ or bigger tyres. Mrs julian has continental city contact and they are ace. I have specialized nimbus and they are ok but i will probably try something else when they wear out.

br, I edited my post whilt you were typing yours. In the NHS you come out the same in hours over the year regardless, and get paid about two thirds extra if your day ‘on’ happens to be a bank holiday.

Think how much it would cost for every public servant to have an extra day off. In light of the spending cuts I wonder how you could justify it. In light of that and of course my bleeding-heart leftism I’m not really fussed about it.

[edit] mr mo, in the NHS we get the day off later on if we work a bank holiday. Or I work my usual hours for that week regardless of whether there are none, one or two bank holidays in a week and then have them added onto my leave entitlement for the year.

there’s a thread on SDH including the Wisdom Of Neil on this. And no they aren’t made by goodridge who only make their own and Hope’s hoses. FWIW, in contrast to his time posting on here, Fruit/Neil would appear to be remakable transparent over on SDH, talking about which taiwanese company makes what for him, and not naming who else’s products his suppliers also make. 😆

Oh, by the way and slightly off topic, if anyone was wondering about the ‘secret’ budget DH bike/frame in this month’s dirt, it is dripping with old and new superstar bits. 😀

Ooh, ooh, look at me! I’m niche!

“Which red or silver bars” would have sufficed.

Really? Have you ridden a singlespeed up a proper hill with ‘normal’ bars, and then one with comedically wide flat bars? The second option looks really silly but is definitely better.

Perhaps ‘which red or silver silly-wide low-or-no rise bars’ would have been better then. 😕

What race? Some sort of bad and slighly insulting pun on the name of the race or sponsor. Last 2 years 24/12 had ‘team BongRater’ 😀

yes its the same one and under £50 at edinburgh bike co-op. One of the best VFM bike purchases i have ever made. Don’t bother with the additional parts tray though, its a bit of a faff to put on, the magnet falls out and i seldom find myself using mine.

Surely the sensible-ness engine braking depends on the location of the driven wheels and the load on them. What about a RWD f6rd ranger pickup with nothing in the back? I’d rather brake using the front wheels under the engine on that one… I was told not to engine brake when I did that local authority ‘driving kids in minibus’ training, (this was an lwb rwd transit minibus with no one in the back).

I have done in the past, if i remember rightly this was because of the premature failure of a well-known factory-direct-brand of sintered pad. There was certinly a changeover period between the wearing out of the remaining sintered side and its replacement with an organic one again. I can’t say I really noticed any difference.

Incidentally, having one part worn and one new pad is the only way I can manage to use ssc/imperial pads in my Oro’s as the backing plates are significantly thicker than proper formula pads, and so you can’t fit 2 new pads and the disc rotor in the caliper. 😕

Clubber’s way here too, ie we both get £200 pcm ‘pocket money’ and the rest is bills or saved for house stuff or holidays.

Interestingly (for me!) I have dropped my hours every so slightly and mtrs julian is incresing hers; I still work more hours than her (both on exactly the same hourly wage) but I have the children while she is at work and vice versa. She also rides and races mountain bikes so we spend similar amounts on bikes and events, and she is well aware of what i spend on bikes!

-There was someone on here a while back who used to build clunker bikes with asylum seekers in Bristol. If I could live financially comfortably (and not in Bristol!) and ride a lot I would love to do that.

-Or i would like to get paid a nice wage for singing in a big choir. Despite my rather ahem, ‘colourful’ studenthood, I managed to do this for a bit when I was at university and it was loooovley.

I must say, in this incarnation SBZ/glupton has kept a lot quieter on his own areas of awesomeness in his posts. (lest we forget the athletic and academic genius of the older versions 😉 ) But yes in this instance, as much as we like an argument we really should heed his advice.

It’s interesting to hear that you seem to be going off driving altogether George… Cycle commuting too much fun or driving getting less fun?

‘Big society’ my chuffin’ arse. 👿

I though it was there so communities could grit their own (usually residential, side roads rather than main or bus routes) roads rather than wait for the council to do it. Surely putting it in your truck implies it’s not going on the street the bin is in?

    julianwilson

My (parked in the street) car once got hit by a bin lorry when i was out, and the driver was good enough to leave his name and contact details for his supervisor at work to sort out insurance. Supervisor seemed completely unflapped that it had happened and took details etc. It was my lease car from work though, so no idea how long the actual insurance bits took to sort out.

The combination of some truly awesome session musicians and some very silly lyrics. As an introduction to old fashioned country it’s quite good, especially if you don’t listen to the words. The music really is as tight as a gnat’s chuff especially the eyewatering pedal steel.

I’ve got this and its ace. So warm I only use it the coldest of cold (which for Devon i suppose is like about all of december and january for you scotchlanders). Front half of the balaclava itself is windproof too. Only thing is the front masky bit isn’t quite high/wide enough to go over my lantern jaw and muighty French hooter.

Richie: you’re right to avoid complainy threads IMO, folk will always come out of the woodwork to moan and people without an axe to grind are far more likely to be out having a ride. So even if you are not Dave Hinde, the complainers will always outnumber you and harness the unstoppable power of Keyboard Rage .

When I said ‘good example’, I meant of you being transparent and not astroturfing at all. Apart from that last post. 😆
If you have a look at the MTBR guidelines for industry/shop folk on there, the likes of spokescycles, thebikechain and yourself are pretty much bang on what they would like in terms of what your profile and posts ‘look like’ and reply to. Is it Dave Turner who is always popping up on there to answer queries about his bikes?

I think the likes of Brant, Cy and Sam are well known enough on here and of course have links to their websites clicking on their usernames. What would be nice is if everyone industry-related used their company name somewhere in their username so the uninitiated know.

A good example would be that richiethesilverfish pops up on threads associated with silverfish products, but its nice and obvious who he works for and what he’s doing here. (he would seem to use the forum for ‘normal’ as opposd to business stuff too btw) He never seems to on the ones that moan about them though, that’s probably very wise! 😆
