How much was it on sale for? (purely idle interest, no way i could afford one i am sure)

I suppose they were more common in the day but at a race last year I saw a Yates D.O.G.S.B.O.L.O.X, or however it is you spell it.

Oh and a mate of a mate sold his square tubed pace last year, complete with bullseye cranks. It was well mint too 😀

I’ve just pressed in a hope reducer into a mate’s prophet, it looks really well made and thought out, comes with a hed doctor and usual nice sealing…and normal sized bearings for replacement. (he bought it because the monsta-size replacements for his old reducer headset were £35. Each!)

with wind and trail conditions I often have to change down to middle ring and affect a proper gurn in order to pedal downhill on dartmoor.

Removing kitchen floor tiles that were stuck down with the most powerful adhesive ever known to man which also took lumps of asphalt with it.

snap! Mine were big and sort of enamelled on top. I wore my knee pads (as in DH ones) chunky gloves and goggles, still ended up with a few little cuts on my face and neck from flying splinters of tile: some I had to destroy cm by cm just to get off the floor. 👿

I’ve heard of this but I thought it was only for ipods, phones and the like. 😕

Is the seller also on UK ebay?

[edit] ah, the 2nd post makes much more sense. This would be to mitigate against ‘forgotten’ accounts being hacked and used to sell non-existent goods.

When someone says ‘to be perfectly honest with you’ I just can’t help wondering how honest they are the rest of the time…

And I have seen lost of folk doing the ‘quotation marks with fingers’ and saying ‘lol’. 😕

…ooooh, english Mental Health Act FTW then 😀

    julianwilson

the greatape, in england/wales they could have done that without him being formally charged and appearing in court, by the FME requesting a Mental Health Act Assessment and then going straight to hospital from police cells.

Perhaps in scotland you can’t though?

    julianwilson

I can’t remember the diferences between the mental health act in scotland and england/wales, but it is certain that even if the old guy was drooling mad, they had to actually arrest him for something so they could take him away since he was in his own home (in england you would otherwise have to get a magistrate’s warrant via a social worker, which takes aaaaages and necessitates old man getting really shirty whilst police stay at his house until warrant plus social worker are produced. Or they nick him for something and then have him assessed in the cells. They wouldn’t have then needed to charge him though: I wonder if this bit is different in scotland?)

As to being wounded by a 98 year old, I reckon SBZ would be able to put someone on their arse from beyond the grave, never mind 98.

    1) the build shown in the pics is SC’s more flashy one. The ‘build from $xxx’ statemet at the bottom will refer to the ‘budget’ deore/float r shock/recon fork build.

    2) Generally with SC the cost in dollars over there is not far off or even the same as the cost in pounds over here.

So a bit over 2k for a relatively ok spec fs 29er. Sounds reasonable value for what is reported to be a great bike, but not outrageously bargainiferous.

For me it would be cos i live 5 minutes walk away from carphone warehouse, and if there is a problem I can walk back in and speak the the bloke i got the phone from. And yes itdoes cost the same as if i’d got it direct from the network.

yes you will need shorter bolts, budget for £5-8. It is bodgeable with the right size washers/spacers (i used the steel inserts from a broken bashring once upon a time).
Oh and a 9 speed chain may have trouble sitting properly on the rear sprocket (depends which one you get iirc), 3/8″ singlespeed chains or 6/7/8 speed chains are nice and cheap though and will happily sit on any chainring/cog combo.

BTW that frame is Gert Lush! 😀

those bits on your rock lobster on an orange st4 or SC superlight frame would be ace (complete builds on those 2 don’t seem anything like as good value as the big brand bikes you posted up there.)

Also, are merlin still doing that deal on complete build turner flux? that was well good value!

Magpie good if you want to shift a load all at once, but they are basically a reseller aren’t they so you pay for the convenience of gettong shot of them all at once rather than in a zillion little transactions.

ebay good for ‘popular’ music on vinyl, i sold loads of metal and grunge to europeans who simply had to have it on vinyl, some of the auctions went well silly! 😀 Fees are very high once you factor in listing, final value and paypal fees. Anythhing that goes for less than a fiver just isn’t worth listing on ebay any more IMO.

If you have the time and patience it’s much easier to list on discogs than ebay, the fees are waaaaay better and you can just leave stuff on there until it sells. You don’t pay to list it, only if you sell it. Feedback system is ok and you aren’t obliged to use paypal.

yes benz, that’s the little fella’. Make sure you use the long bolts as on that one it has to go through the caliper, 2 sets of conical washers and the adapter before it goes into the post mount.

never dropped or snapped either type of chain on singlespeed, I usually use KMC 6/7/8speed chain cos its cheap! I have a 3/32 singlepeed one on at the moment, again only cos it was cheapest at the time.

are you sure your elixir caliper is IS? I thought Avid only made post-mount with those conical washers…..

..which you then put straight onto post mount for 160mm rotor, or use an adapter to go onto IS mount on your fork or frame..

I liked my old Scott genius but only after i *slightly over-forked it with pikes.

Otherwise, SC bullit with dhx5 is a huge skill compensator and trail iron-out-er. Huge fun.

I’ve never heard this version! It’s pretty cool really. 🙂

My nirvana vinyl was converted to MP3 and then ‘recycled’ into bike parts via ebay a few years ago. I was well suprised (in a good way) at what I got for it.

The stuck side: are you undoing it the right way? The drive/chainring side of the BB is threaded the opposite way round so you turn it clockwise to take it out.

If you like the cranks and don’t want to spend too much money you might be able to press the dead bearings out of the BB cups and see if you can get replacements. Ka-tec bearings (kaesae on this forum) is most helpful, he might be a bit more expensive than random budget bearings on ebay but is a friendly guy and may be able to give you tips. Or ring BETD, they could also press new bearings in for you (but likely a bit more expensive than ka-tec.)

Dunno about the stiffness, but IIRC when the mags reviewed it, the issue with the Warner SPD was with the cleat plates being rather too far forward/backward (i forget which!) so deinitely worth finding a shop with one you can have a look at. Even if they don’t have your size you could compare stiffness and cleat postition with another shoe.

I used to have some Vans Exacerbate 2 from 8 or nine years ago, they were ever so slightly stiffer than my ‘leisure’ shimano spds but nothing like a proper xc shoe. Really heavy but really great and comfy they were.

That sucks. I’m so sorry for you all. 🙁

The way you tell it, it stinks to high heaven of “Aha, we’ve had a great offer on this land, how do we make it look like its both legal and a good idea to boot the bike park off and make a huge profit on it?” The wildlife angle is particularly ridiculous since the woodpeckers find that concrete found on expensive hotel and leisure facilities blunts their beaks. 😕

I am assuming you are going round the UK cycling press/internets with this. Your local community, and local MP needs to know about it. (Why not email the minister for Sports too?) I am guessing a nice patch like Esher has a Conservative MP so questionable whether it will register on the WGAF-ometer.
Make sure the local paper knows, and makes a big song and dance about disaffected kids with nowhere to go ride any more. And the death of another small-ish business (the shop) and would-be social enterprise (the not-for-profit park). Big society my big fat hairy arse. 👿

A great bike gadget would be a bar-mounted wide angle camera, usb rechgargeable that just records a very high-res (say enough for numberplates?) 2 minute loop. You could hit a big red button after a crash (or it could programme itself to stop recording and save video in case of a large enough impact?) and use it to nobble other party in an accident, and chase them through police if they fail to stop. (Or stitch yourself up in case of your own reckless cycling, 😆 )

This being STW i hope someone will post up with exactly what I just wondered about producing.

+1 for 66’s. Get 05/06 italian made ones, later ones (until 2010) a bit less reliable allegedly. Even the basic rc ones are ace. And they make a better ‘squooshy’ noise than mission control rockshox. IMHO of course.

Trail Snail Racing family/team totals 15, but we have never quite all made it out on the same ride at the same time. (of the 15, I suppose 12 of us are parents and three of us are nurses, so imagine the logistics of us all being free at the same time. I think 12 or 13 of us managed the 24/12 last year though)

Probably a handful of other riding mates on top of that, and occasionally I go out on weekly xc pain/cheekyfest with another local club.

Down here its not hard to bump into new riding mates though. I suppose if i still lived in Leicestershire it would be a different story!

so using one does little or nothing for developing a feel for ‘normal’ tools.

….how do you know the feel for correct tension for a fitting in the first place though? I recall quite a few folk on here posting about how they didn’t realise how tight they had fastened everything until they got a torque wrench.

I suppose some people talk about ‘put a mark in the palm your hand if you use a 8cm long allen key’ as some sort of guide, but that is even less scientific than the +/-15% variation in budget torque wrenches.

three fish, any tips for the beginner who hasn’t a scooby about the difference in ‘feel’ between three and twelve n/m?

Me too, sold about 2000 so far.

you either sold them all in bundles of 10 or you too find most of your buyers never leave feedback.

According to my discogs ‘archive’ I’ve had about 200 transactions (all sales in my case), but I’ve still only got 100 or so feedbacks. 😕

You can buy a santa cruz superlight frame also made in taiwan for £100 less than the whole boardman fs bike. And that’s only if you get the less good shock on the sc, its £130 more for the rp23.

You can see where the corners are cut on boardmans (hubs, cockpit, that well-naff saddle, tyres, headset) but the welding/frame finish is as good as i have seen on specialized/giants for similar or 50% more money, and hey, they are almost good enough value to buy for the (rest of the) parts and ebay the frame. Ditto the new halfords voodoo range, the parts on them for the money is astonishing.

And i don’t even like halfords.

We used to call people Henders. Hender was written on the side of the special bus.

Aye, we used to use the names of our local special school and mental hospital as playground insults. The latter being accompanied by a ‘struggling in straight-jacket’ movement/gesture. We were 8, mind….
