I’ve mixed and matched a couple of grease guns and a few tubes of grease: they all seem the same thread to me and work fine. Well, except my example of that grease gun with the long transparent green nozzle (sold under a few brands iirc) is a bit rubbish.

errrr, some roadies would object to the helmet straps being over the arms of the glasses in the top photo?

and neither subject would seem to have shaved their legs. :?

depends which is grippier for your sort of mud. You want the back to wash out first. My trailrakers didn’t like our local mud whereas mud x’s do (and seem much better over roots and rock), so if it was me on my local trails i would start with the mud x on the front. But you might find if your mud is ‘wetter’ then you get more sideways grip from the trailraker.

assuming he was doing it “properly” (i.e. blocking the entrance and exit of a trail, not just putting them in on blind corners, at the bottom of steep descents etc)

entrance, exit and many middly bits are covered with evergreen branches from recent-ish thinning/felling, logs are not particularly well hidden and start about 50 yards into the trail (which is about 500m long i suppose). Its got to be a good 2 hours work for one bloke to cover it up. (It was much much longer than that for my pixying friends and I to clear the path and ride it in)

Its not more than 50 yards away from a well established path that dogwalkers use. Oh and i suppose his three dogs will have had a good run around while he was beavering away there.

I’m pretty sure he is some sort of volonteer ‘ranger’: I certainly know of a couple of other blokes that are in our woods.

I suppose the ‘making an easy trail dangerous or unrideable’ is annoying, but what gets my goat really is the idea that cyclists who smell of human and stick to the trails are more concerning to the local fauna than a dog walker who also smells of human, plus his dogs who smell of dog, wee on trees, wander off the trails and get very curious about other animals.

I would be far more worried about some of the frankly ludicrous downhill lines, doubles and drops all of 500m away from the ‘frightened deer zone’. Which i am always finding deer on in the evenings and early mornings anyway…

merlin are doing 09 reba sl with bar mount pushloc for £250. Great reliable fork. Lowest price i have seen for ages.

Or get one off classifieds for a bit less.

I’ve had four ‘motion control 32mm family’ rs forks (reba, pike x2, recon) and they have all been ace.

    Crikey, its 2007.

makes my ebay bargain used xt chainset the other day slightly less of a bargain now…

It will be telling to see if these turn out to be someone’s overstocked oem or proper boxed ones, as they are basically the same prices as they were when they were the latest models 2/3 years ago.

Report the actions of the ‘worker’ to the FC. I’ll bet it’s not sanctioned and he’ll get a bo11ocking for it. Tw4t.

A kind friend/trail pixie who has a good realationship with the proper warden is already on the case.

I don’t really mind unsanctioned trails getting trashed by the FC. It is of course their wood. What worries me is:

    1) that they are trashed in such a way that some kid will come hooning round a corner and hurt themself on a 10″ log laid perperendicularly across the trail by someone that sort of works there. If they blame it on militant dog walkers then hey ho, but you have to accept that making trails more dangerous is not the way to stop them being built or used. The trail in question is one of the least challenging or technical of the great many in this wood.

    2) that in ‘protecting’ deer from mountain bikers, the 3 dogs wandering around off leads whilst the ‘ranger’ buries the trail scare them off even more.

    3) that approaching 2 women mountainbikers in a state of quite some agitation at 8.30pm in an isolated wood does not do much for the image of the Commission.

what did you sell? Mobile phones, games consoles and laptops are a big source of concern for ebay and paypal as they refund defrauded buyers and lose the fraudulent sellers. Not fair on people like you mind, and they really ought to warn you about this policy when you list the item on ebay in the first place. I don’t think its unreasonable for an ebay seller to expect to have their money within a few days of auction. The pressing need for funds often being why i have sold stuff anyway!

The buyer will have paid up: it is paypal who are sitting on your money. And generating nice amount of interest when you extrapolate this out to all the other people they are doing it to.

I guess this means you have to post it special/recorded delivery, and photograph serial numbers, condition and packaging insode and out in case your buyer disputes what you actually sent them.

The ‘community’ ebay forum may be of help to you. Or you might just see how many other people are complaining about this and being told ‘tough’ by e-pal.

I ironed mine back on. It is the sort of stretchy rubbery clear stuff that had the imprint of the seams/ststching still in it when it came off so I guessed it was melted on there in the first place. (i don’t think all seams are like that though), did it on a low heat veeeeerrrryyy sloooooowwwly through a teatowel and it sort of melted itself back on. It did take ages, mind.

wasn’t there a thread on here a while back where that happened to someone? IIRC they got pulled over for ‘dangerous driving’ (pulling into fast lane of motorway?) by someone who cllaimed to be a plainclothes policeman, swore at them a lot and then didn’t book them.

My issue isn’t with enforcement of the speed limits by cameras or the police, it’s the idea of turning neighbours against each other by recruiting them as spies effectively. The same technique was used in East Germany and in France during the war. It’s not a nice way to live – we should be encouraging neighbours to look out for each other.

Troll or too much caffeine too early in the morning?

I *think* they may have been ratting on their neighbours for things other than speeding. Like listening to west berlin radio or harbouring escaped airmen. Which would be both more ‘laudable’ wrongdoings in the eyes of the rest of the world, and also taken more seriously by the local, err, authorities. Hardly in the same league? I’m not sure there is a reasonable argument for the right to speed, its not going to overthrow a totalitarian government is it?

[edit] although the John Wayne man in previous post really sounds rather ridiculous

ask trailmonkey when he is next doing a ride. He *may* have had something to do with the trail guide in last month’s singletrack mag. In fact, the routes in there would be a good place to start. Not too far from chudleigh neither..

Do you downhill? Gawton (near Tavistock) really is bonkers. Similar random woodsy singletrack in Cann Wood near Plymouth but having ridden at Haldon this morning I wouldn’t bother coming here just for that as the trail pixies at Haldon seem rather more organised than ours here. Loooooaaaaaddddds of fun stuff round Haldon if you look around a bit…

You really have to ride round Lustleigh though. Wait till its been warm and dry for a couple of weeks as it takes ages to dry and is just lovely when it is.

never had a stoneware casserole but i did crack my big stoneware lasagne dish after repeated sessions under the grill.

The cast iron casserole dishes are indestructible in oven onr on hob though.

Funny how i have a kitchen full of cheap tat and potato peelers from wilkos, but a load of posh saucepans. Perhaps its just cos they are so easy to clean!

Tim, my nrs looks just like your bike but even more garish. (that daft motorsport-esque sponsors list ionthe top tube too) I loves it!

Back on topic though, a friend spent ages with electrical tape and a scalpel masking the outside of the bright yellow merlin logo on his malt 2. He then did some wierd mottled paint thing to the logo itself so make it readable but less garish. Came out really well considering he’s never done anything like that before.

did you do normal or ‘gift’ paypal? It would seem that paypal realise we are all dodging their fees buying stuff from each other, and will not get involved in disputes in this case, but will on the other hand support the buyer if you did pay ‘normally’.

A lot of chaff involved in those exciting air-to-air missile bits iirc.

back on topic, I suppose mojo couldn’t comment on enduro seals since they import and warranty fox: they are unlikely to admit that their seals are rubbish and we should buy someone else’s. TF and Stendec don’t seem to mention them on their websites; is this because they don’t sell enduro (and can sell you something else)?

fwiw their replacement bottom bracket bearings are doing very well in a few of mine and mates’ bikes so far; common sense stuff like bigger balls, more grease (lower rpm) and nice seals. Which unlike their fork seals are very soft at the edges for a nice fit with the bb shell.

not sure i can face top gun again though. :?

of course if we all bought photos from our races they would be cheaper, non? Overheads are mostly about getting there, taking, sorting/tagging/naming, uploading and hosting a zillion photos, which happens regardless of if anyone buys them or not.
Mrs Julian bought one as an actual print from joolze dymond recently btw. Nice quality and came very quickly in the post.

jackson do/did ‘hardtail’ ones too: i forget what they were called but basically the same shape similar sort of pickups and sound but without a floyd rose tremolo. That would be much more versatile: you can retune/detune between songs and the other strings stay in tune if you break one mid-song. I would rather get a fixed bridge guitar and a digitech whammy for ‘divebomby’ stuff. Much easier to live with, as unless your boy is a real whizz setting up guitars, it may spend an alarming amount of time being fiddled with in guitar shops. Setting up a floyd rose is rather like building a really bendy bike wheel in terms of trial and error and lots of fine adjustments.

sponging-machine had a 140mm fork on his trance too and he loved it.

i have pikes on my 125mm scott genius. Dunno what the frame weighs but whole bike (2005) was 29lb with pretty low end kit when i bought it. It is far more fun to ride with a bigger fork on and even climbs pretty well with the front at 140mm. Pivots are as easy as anything else to service/replace, only you are tied to Scott to get the shock serviced. I have ridden mine fairly foolishly since 2005 and it has been fine, only on 2nd set of pivot bearings.
And people can’t seem to shift them whenever they come up on classifieds so you might be able to get one cheeeeeeeeeap.

I have heard of people building and riding giant nrs’s in fairly warranty-busting ways (ie longer fork and 20-30% sag) and having much fun/little problems. There was one year where the chainstays snapped a lot but i’m sure that is easily researchable to avoid those ones.

is the tubing thick enough to cope with being clamped and then sat on at those points? The middle of the downtube on my maxlight xc pro is thin enough top be able to squeeze in and out slightly with your fingertips, i can’t imagine that the zaskar le was built much heavier/chunkier than that?

nope: that bit will be the bolt in the top of the stem: basically pulls a vertical wedge upwards and keeps the stem tight in the steerer tube.

999 or 112 will use anyone’s network if you’re out of range of your own but in range of other ones.

(Not always the middle of nowhere either; i found a street just off brighton seafront where i had no signal whatsoever until i peeped around a corner and then had a full one.)

I am not sure you get a chopper/mountain rescue/rnli lifeboat instantly (!) but iirc there is also some technology gubbins available that can triangulate a phone signal if you enough of a worry to GCHQ errr, the emergency services.
