I had a look at the website , but I couldnt actually find any info about the event itself, ie where is it, what is it etc etc.

Im not trying to be negative, just constructive.

Whats the 2010 enduro like? It looks more of a return to the 05/06 style – ie slightly heavier but more confident with it.

I tried the 2009 enduro, and whilst its undoubtably lighter than the 05 and better going up hill , it didnt feel anywhere near as confident going down. Not sure how much of that is due to the fairly poor rear shock and the 32mm forks versus the 36mm forks on the 05 enduro. Maybe with fox 36's and a decent rear shock it would be just as good?

An alpine 160 was the main one I had in mind, but I thought it might be a bit slower uphill, but I guess there wouldnt be much in it.

I'm only asking as I snapped my chainstay yesterday, and it looks like specialized are going to warranty it, but if they werent I might have looked at buying a new frame and transferring the bits over.

Santa cruz nomad looks decent, but dont know how well they pedal uphill.

ok I'll post an update in a week or so's time and let you all know if everything came together properley.

It was the good attitude to fixing it that impressed me so far, no quibbles, no arguments, just bring it in and we'll get it sorted. This is 4 years after I bought the bike from them.

Also they did sort out a problem I had with the 5th element shock right at the very beginning of my ownership very quickly also, so no complaints from me so far.

I'd rather have a rear triangle the same colour as the rest of the frame, but I did read elsewhere thats unlikely to happen, but I'm not that much of a bike tart that it would bother me hugely, the frame is scratched and chipped allover anyway.

They replaced mine with identical lowers, at the time mojo were still supplying them, I dont know when they stopped being able to supply them.

mine were cracked for about 2 years, I didnt even know until they went in for a service. Mojo replaced them for free on the basis that I paid for a full service.

Were going in a couple of weeks time for the first time. Can someone advise what time the lifts open and close?

Where are the 3-4 foot drops in gisburn? I dont remember seeing them last time I rode round it, must have been about 6 months ago.

Had my enduro for 4 years now, I've had no frame breakages, probably because I dont ride it hard enough.

Its my only bike, so goes everywhere, its an ace bike, I have no issue with any aspect of its performance.

I dont think its to do with 'airing' down a slope that could also be rolled.

To me a drop is anything that you have to have both wheels in the air in order to make it safely over without falling off.

Any form of slope that its possible to roll over is not a drop.

It just got me wondering if my defination of a drop was always wrong, and maybe I've been doing 20 foot drops without realising it for years. ;-)

I went through many chains from both shimano and sram, they would last about 2 rides before snapping.

I changed to a connex wipperman about 3 years ago, and they generally last about 20 rides.

I'm pretty happy with the fox, but they are quite old now, so I figured that if it wouldnt cost too much more than the service plus the repairs, maybe there are better options out there now, plus I'd get a warranty again.

Its silent throughout the travel, it doesnt make any squelchy noises (unlike my last set of marzocchis).

it is due a service, I guess I should take it in soon.

Does this approach work on all fox forks?

I have a set of 2005 36 R TALAS forks, and the rebound adjust seems to do nothing until the last couple of clicks when it slows it down quite a bit.

Should have done a search before asking the question.

The issues seems to be centred around the proprietry rear shock, and snapped frames.

But those who havent had any issues, seem to be very happy with the way the bike rides.

Maybe a pitch or enduro is the safer option.

    ok thanks, sounds interesting…..

You dont see many about, I wonder why? They're quite cheap if looking at last years/years before model.

In a way its sometimes more useful to hear from the people who have negative opinions.

But I like downhills, so will put up with the pain for a good down.

I guess I should have been more specific, I get no pleasure from uphills, so hate the sort of route where you end up going uphill on a section that would be awesome as a down, and you end up going down on a smooth wide stretch of gravel.

    This route looks ok:-

Has anyone got a GPS track of it, to save me having to try and draw it on google earth?

    Cheers

so, where else should I look at going?

Anyone got any good natural routes in the north west surrounding manchester?

The following is my definition of good:-

    -minimal walkers
-long flowing downhill sections where some speed can be had
    -technical downhill sections
-I hate the narrow rutted sections that are often found on natural routes in the peaks.
    – I hate going uphill, so easy ups would be good.
    – its got to be all off road.
    – Minmal 'filler' sections, you know, where you ride for miles on an uninteresting trail just to get to a good bit.

Fancy discovering some good natural routes, as we've been to llandegla too much recently, places like penmachno/coedy brenin are a bit too far to go for the day.

Anyone got any gps tracks for anything that fits the bill?

I wear GP contact lenses every waking hour of every day, my vision cannot be corrected by glasses, only by contact lenses

I used to get grit/mud in them when biking even when wearing clear glasses , the only way to stop it was to wear goggles.

A year or so ago, I got one of those neoprene things that goes on the forks and stops mud bring slung forward by the wheel, and a plastic mudguard that attaches to the frame.Since getting these, the mud/grit problem has gone away.

I wonder what causes it. I have some 36r's from 2005, and they're fine still despite only being serviced once in five years, and never being stored upside down.

Cheers, will have a look at the manual.

Do you know if you can get at (and adjust) all the adjusters when its mounted to the frame? ie is there enough space?

Used flats for years, tried spd's (crank bros actually) for 6 months at the beginning of 2009 , but didnt like them, now back on flats again.

spd's were more efficient up hill and on flat, but I just prefer the confidence I got from flats.

I fell off loads more often when I used the spd's,and the crashes were always more painful than falling with flats, so much so that I bought knee/shin pads because I'd fall that much more frequently than when I used flats.

Now I'm back on flats I've ditched the knee/shin pads , and rarely fall off.

Try them both and see what works best, its all individual preference.

Same happened at Gisburn on that rocky drop in the woods with the step in the middle of it. I couldn't ride it on my enduro when I first saw it but a bit of gentle coaching from Ed saw me flying down it on my hard tail.

Which rocky drop is that? Do you mean the relatively steep rocky 'path' in the woods? or is there another bit somewhere else?

Just back from llandegla myself. The guy on the gate told us what happened.

I'll be making sure my bike is locked up next time I go in the cafe

I tried an XT cassette a while ago, but ended up bending the larger cogs (and before anyone asks, no I wasnt in the big front ring and the big rear cogs when I bent them)

Saddle and post are standard enduro spec (post is 2014 alloy according to the spec sheet).

The bashguard was the one area I was thinking might be cheap to save to weight, so any suggestions there are very welcome.

Scottchegg – to a certain extent I think you're correct, and this will probably be as far as I go with the weight loss programme, but I'm just checking that I havent missed anything obvious, it was ~36lb before I started on this.
