Point Break doesn’t need a remake.

Sapphire and Steel could NEVER be as good as it was with Joanna Lumley and David McCallum in it (just been watching Colditz with DMcC and he’s very good)

Why have so few Georgette Heyer and Nevil Shute books been filmed? There are some fantastic stories out there that would make great films. These Old Shades, Devil’s Cub (the Duke of Avon was SUCH a great character!) Actually there were quite a few more Nevil Shute stories filmed, but decent versions are thin on the ground or little known – No Highway, for example?

Ours is absolutely brilliant. Lovely person and becoming a friend as well.

£10 per hour and we add the odd extra bit of cash here and there as she is so worth it and is always ready to do extra stuff herself – like helping us pack the van when we were moving house!

Came by recommendation – we’re very fortunate. Time is too precious to be hoovering. I don’t fix my car either – it’s better to let an expert do it…

I used to climb a few years ago and, as has been said above, it makes no difference to the belayer what grade the climber is on. Most walls have different grades on the same wall anyway so both partners can get a good climb.

Some places have ‘self belaying’ routes as well – Alton used to have a couple, don’t know if they still do but might be worth checking that out as well.

Most places have a bouldering wall anyway. I found that these can be as hard as the belayed walls!

    I’m still only being offered a watch…

Now Merc parts WOULD be useful!

Not really happy to slag anyone off before or after their death. It’s easy to do but should we?

Some may appear worthy of it but who knows…?

What circumstances drive people to do what they do? Some people do very bad things but who are we to judge?

People will perhaps disagree but criticising someone without walking a mile in their shoes is not fair.

Captain, I did my best – even tried to adjust Emma Curtis’s leggings later that evening and still didn’t get banned from the TH (not that I wanted to be banned – it was my second home for several years…!)

She understood my situation… Bless her and all the beer she sold me. Hmm, happy hour in the TH!

Caligula has to be in the list, too, along with Crash (the J G Ballard adaptation), Ladies in Lavender and The Piano.

I’d rather watch Caligula again than The Piano or Ladies in Lavender.

Hmmm, Hopback Summer Lightning! Brings back memories of a certain music do in the Hobbit.

More stories of that event are available. Summer Lightning – don’t do it (at least do it carefully!)

I’m all for going to the German model where public channels are paid for through general taxation but retaining independence from governemnet influence. Means we don’t need to have this debate.

Missed this – didn’t know about it and liking it already. Sounds like a very good idea – increasing taxation in this country isn’t something that most people would go for though!

@squirrelking – I wasn’t saying that you necessarily watched iPlayer etc – just having a pop at those who do and don’t contribute to the making of the programs. I should have said ‘if one can afford’ etc not if ‘you can afford’ to depersonalise my comments, sorry. It was about 5:00 this morning!

Someone in my family does exactly this and it pisses me off.

I appreciate that it is perfectly legal to watch catchup TV, listen to the BBC radio channels and use the BBC website without a license – that is what needs addressing.

Have a TV license and intend to keep it that way.

How do you think the programs you watch on iPlayer get paid for in the first place? Or the (mostly) very good BBC web site?

If you can afford a great big flat screen TV you can afford ~£3 per week for the license.

I dunno – I don’t see the adverts – but I guess the argument is that adverts aren’t content, whereas an external link as part of a thread is.

External – exactly. A link to another thread should open in the same tab / window, but external links – BBC, YouTube etc – take the user away from the original site.

    JulianA

Nope! It’s bad practice – much better to let users have the choice than force the decision on them.

Then why do most of the adverts on STW open in a new tab?

    JulianA

Ctrl-click (or middle mouse button) will do that. If ‘new window’ was hard-coded, there would be no way of a user overriding that default behaviour.

I don’t have a mouse for my iPad… I know I can tap and hold to get the option to open a link in a new tab but it’s annoying.

Why would a user want to override this?

And while we’re on the subject could the links in posts please open in a new window?

Should be really simple to do… And it’s good practice not to navigate away from the original site when opening a link.

@ JulianA, I would have thought your top irritation would be the décor in the Embassy, not a watch advert.

    Sorry, don’t get it?

IMG and Video crash Safari for me – iPad 3 running iOS 8.4.

On reopening Safari the formatting / insert buttons don’t always appear – it takes a refresh to get them back.

Far more annoying, however, is that bloody Tudor watch pop up. Whilst I appreciate the need for advertising, I can’t think of any other website with such an obtrusive advert. Sorry, guys, but it’s a bit over the top.

So you need to learn a new language – just do it. We get paid VERY well for doing this mystical art that everyone thinks is impossible – your ability to learn is the only reason you earn this.

    This.

I’m banking on it as my contract ends tomorrow (yay! End of 55 mile each way trip to current client!) but don’t need to learn a new language though, thankfully.

Unplug BT router from old house.

    Plug in in new house.

    Use.

Just done it and it works fine – took a day or two of reboots to settle it down but pretty much good as gold now.

Sadly it seems that this man has done nothing illegal.

As and when big game hunting becomes illegal perhaps this kind of thing will become prosecutable.

There are some horrible posts on the yelp link and I don’t think we should wish ill on someone for legal actions – just hope that he thinks about them.

@CFH – I’m around from next week as my contract finishes on Friday! I’ll be rather slow as I haven’t cycled for ages though…

Also, I’m in your ‘hood on Monday and at a loose end for a few hours – coffee?

Don’t do cycling any more (although I’m tempted to explore the area we’ve just moved to on my bike) but love

    Botany
    Birdwatching
    Walking
Foreign travel when time and money permit
Exploring WWI and WWII sites and cemeteries
    Aeroplanes
    Cars
Steam railways (preferably narrow gauge and on the continent)
    Good food and wine

It wasn’t fiction so probably not the book you are looking for but The Flame Trees of Thika was excellent – as was the TV series (available on DVD)
