I do love what I do – very rewarding and it’s a constant learning curve!

Much more likely to be a Green Woodpecker than a Parakeet if it was in woodland, I should have thought.

The museums at the Cinquantenaire look very interesting.

The tram museum is on my list of places to go (but not WW related, obviously!)

The TV series is dreadful and this will undoubtedly live up to that standard. Looks rubbish.

Not a museum, but if you leave the ferry at Ouistreham (Caen..) and head to Pegasus Bridge, there’s a wee cafe right next to the bridge. Well worth a visit if you’re passing, there’s so much memorabilia packed inside floor to ceiling.
    Coffee’s good too.

The museum at Pegasus Bridge is excellent and very moving, too. So is the Museum of Army Flying at Middle Wallop – they are ‘twinned’, as it were.

There’s a brilliant little natural history museum between Nafplio and Epidavros in the Peloponnese

    http://www.museumsnorfolk.org.uk/fenland-and-west-norfolk-aviation-museum

Tangmere and the De Havilland Museum as mentioned above.

    Brooklands is still brilliant.

Not so little, but the pumping station at Kempton is excellent, as is the one at Crofton on the Kennet and Avon Canal.

    * Insert other awful trouser colour as required. I’ve seen the way you dress!

And the problem with green or orange is…?

@MrOvershoot – well spotted on the W123 thing. 300TD quite rare now, I think? W123s definitely lovely.

Don’t like Audis or the people who drive them, but the interiors are always pretty nice.

As others have said, strange sentiments…

Another Audi driver here: it’s a lovely car to look at and to be in and I try to be a nice guy (but don’t always succeed, admittedly).

MrsJulianA’s Octavia is very well put together and our Mercedes is very nice to be in too.

Maybe people will see sense and think about voting Nea Dimocratica back in? Not sure how much good they have done for Greece but also not sure how good Tsipras and his crew have been either.

Greece seems to have swung between left and right for decades – the civil war and the General’s Junta seem to have been worse for the populace than WWII in many ways.

Maybe a centre-right party like ND might be a a good idea after all.

Love the place and have spent a good few months there over the last fifteen years but their corruption and national sport of tax evasion don’t make the place any better for themselves.

    Aargh…

I contracted at a company that used the first three letters of a surname followed by the first three letters of a first name as the first part of an email address.

I was hoping that someone called Kerry Wanless was going to work there.

Not exactly ‘urban’ but we had a great trip to Verdun a few years ago where I went poking around in an underground WW1 fort. Lots of old gun raising and lowering machinery etc – very interesting.

I had to pretend that ‘Danger, defense d’entrée’ meant ‘Welcome, come in and take a look around’. I expect that one can still get into a few of those old places – found a website about a lot of the old forts around Verdun recently – I want to go back and take another look!

I found Verdun to be a very dark place – makes the Somme and Flanders feel quite cheerful.

I’ve spent some time poking around in Welsh mines as well – great fun. Just take a look at the roof of any tunnel that you plan to enter and make a call as to how long it’s going to stay up before you go in! The silica mine at Glyn Neath is good for a bit of snorkelling if you fancy it – gin clear water…

Hit a deer a couple of years ago when it ran out in front of me. Reversed over it and drove over it again to make sure it was dead – not nice but couldn’t leave it without making sure.

The carcass was gone the next day – someone had venison for a few days (or Cinnamon Girl had a new stuffed animal!)

I was lucky – one new indicator lens and a very small dent in my wheel arch.

Sixt tried to rip us off – raised a dispute with Nationwide (paid on NW cc) and they argued the toss for us and the charge on the cc was released.

There is also an organisation that might look at the issue if you have been through the dispute procedure with the hire company. European Car Hire Organisation or something – I can find it for you if you like.

If it’s been serviced by VAG there should be electronic records as well as stamps in the book. If it was serviced by independent companies there won’t be a VAG record but the book should have been stamped anyway.

Wondering what a Vauxhall dealer would know about VAG practices anyway…?

    Sorry, I’m a bit naïve.

    They sell good stuff 😀

    BT
    Lovehoney
Micheldever Tyre Services (more excellent service there today)
Nationwide (they got a spurious charge by Sixt released from MrsJulianA’s credit card removed)
Premier Inn (for their Good Night’s Sleep policy – charge refunded when we said the room was too hot)
Booking.com (left a very slightly critical review of accommodation which was challenged by the property and they told the property to do one)

I’ve been on the other side of the coin, I had a really good temp but my higher ups were not liking how much tth agency charged, so after a nudge nudge wink wink conversation with the temp, I fired him and hired him back direct as a temp, saved the company a couple of quid an hour and paid him a couple of quid an hour more, everyone’s a winner!.. Well, apart from the agency!

Except that everyone wasn’t a winner: you left your company open to being sued – breach of contract, possibly – and your temp possibly damaged his reputation with the agency – thereby reducing his options for future employment.

Very bad practice all round, sorry.

Eek! I went and looked at that “shows” tab! What a rough-looking bint!

Harsh, globalti! Granted, the outfit’s a little trashy but I rather liked the corset and thought she was easy enough on the eye.

Some companies are happy to take a direct contractor. No need for all that payroll stuff – you just invoice them as a supplier (if you are Ltd Co) or use an umbrella company (if you are not a Ltd Co). Another option is to call an agency with whom you have a good relationship and offer them the chance to get you in there.

I would never try to cut out an agency if they had put me forward to a company but I can’t see anything wrong with a direct approach if you have not already been put forward. If no joy with a direct approach just call one of the agencies advertising the requirement and get put forward that way.

Some companies are able to pay a higher rate when there is no agency involved.

I think Gropecunt Lane in Glastonbury has now been renamed, but I remember seeing the sign a few years ago (well, quite a few – around 2002, I think).

Research suggested that there used to be a few paths around the country so named but that they were being renamed – I’m not really surprised.

    I’ll say it again then!

There are not 29 orchid species still to flower at this time of year, the Green-winged (not green-wing) Orchid and the White Helleborine are NOT rare (probably the commonest orchids in Britain after the Common Twayblade)…

The article about the Frog x Common-spotted Orchid in Cumbria was much more exciting – do try to keep up!
